'Mad Dog' lives!
Virginia's second 'Survivor' still kickin' it in Wakefield

CYNTHIA MCMULLEN
TIMES-DISPATCH COLUMNIST Dec 18, 2003

Talking to Jon Dalton earlier this week about his "Survivor: Pearl Islands" experience made me homesick for Maralyn "Mad Dog" Hershey.

For a state this size, Virginia's been pretty prolific in providing "Survivor" its cast mates. First there was Rudy at Pulau Tiga . . . Rudy Boesch, the retired Navy SEAL from Virginia Beach. Next up was Mad Dog, a retired policewoman living in Wakefield, who hit the beach in "Survivor: The Australian Outback."

"Big Tom" Buchanan, a Rich Valley goat and cattle farmer, scratched and drawled his way through the "Africa" series. And now the infamous Dalton, a native of Danville, is done with "Pearl Islands."

The Old Dominion has a pretty good record so far; in their respective series, Boesch and Dalton finished third, and Buchanan made it to fourth place.

But I still love my "Mad Dog" the best. Talk about your feisty characters. Talk about your poster children for appropriate island lingerie.

So I gave her a call to see what was up.

"I have not missed an episode!" Hershey said by phone Monday night, the day after Dalton took his last potshot.

"Amber and I have watched every 'Survivor' for the last three years," she said in that recognizably husky voice. (Amber Lanier is Hershey's sister and a PR manager extraordinaire.)

"Either she or I will cook a fabulous dinner." (Now that she's home, no fish or rice, thank you.)

Hershey recalls her "Survivor" stint with fondness and affection. "I still get fan mail," she said, "and that was three years ago!"

She's a little less sweet on Jon Dalton. "I thought during 'Survivor: Outback' when Tina and the crew went through Kel's bag, that was absolutely atrocious. However . . . Jon's caper? The kid may be diagnostic."

Of Dalton's dead-grandma ruse, the trick he perpetrated to gain a challenge reward, Hershey said, "I'm sorry, you have to maintain some semblance of personal integrity. You don't bring in dead relatives, you just don't do that."

Hershey knows from experience: "Last year some diagnostic individual made up an obituary about 'Mad Dog' and put it on the Net."

Next thing you know, the network had called her sister.

"They were absolutely blown away. When CBS called Amber and said, 'Say it isn't so,' she didn't really know what they were talking about [their mother had passed away a week earlier], and she said, 'I'm afraid it is!'

"Pulling a stunt like that causes some ripples."

On the positive side, Hershey heard from fellow cast mates such as Mitchell Olson and Jerri Manthey - yes, Jerri! The witch!

As far as "Survivor: All-Stars" goes, Hershey said, "I think they cast those folks that lasted at least to the merger and several of the previous winners. I think they were looking for the voracious sharks who really want that money.

"I didn't last long enough."

Several Web sites claim to know the "All-Stars" cast list - three teams of six members each - but CBS hasn't made it official.

"I would've absolutely jumped at the chance," Hershey said. "This time Mad Dog would've had a bite. I wouldn't be there to make friends and meet animals."

Meanwhile, back in Virginia, Hershey's "just chillin'" and riding G-Man, her horse. She hasn't added any tattoos to her Australian ink jobs (a kangaroo and a crocodile, to represent the two teams). If she ever does, she said, it would be a small horseshoe on her right cheek. But not her face.

Rest assured she and Lanier will be glued to their seats for the "All-Stars" premiere Feb. 1.

"I'm sure the dynamics will be out of this world. This will be the one to watch."

Hershey thinks Boesch and Buchanan most likely will be on the show. Though she hasn't met any of her Virginia compatriots, she said, "Rudy and I have the same Hollywood agent. I guess he's BB . . . been busy. Whatever!

"But Jon? Shame. Shame." She doesn't see him making the cut.

Still, she concludes with a gravelly laugh, "If we thought this most recent 'Survivor' was filled with liars and cheats, I don't think it's going to be anything compared."
