Survivor in B.C.?

MARK BURNETT IS LOOKING AT GREAT WHITE NORTH

By BILL BRIOUX, TORONTO SUN

FIRE UP the Tiki torches and pass the Doritos. Survivor might be coming to Canada. And a French-language version of The Apprentice is. Mega-producer Mark Burnett told the Sun in Los Angeles he's seriously considering shooting an edition of Survivor, his top-rated reality series, in the Great White North.

At a press party Wednesday night, I asked Burnett for the umpteenth time if Canadians will finally be allowed to compete in the No. 1 show in Canada. "No, but we could be going to Canada for Survivor," he said.

He suggested it could happen as early as Survivor 11.

This past spring's Survivor: All-Stars was the eighth edition of the reality series. If the current twice-a-year schedule were to continue, Survivor 11 would air in fall 2005.

NO STRANGER

Burnett is no stranger to our land.

He began his career as TV's top unscripted-series producer in British Columbia, where his first Eco-Challenge series ran.

What's more, several members of his crack Survivor camera team are B.C. natives. He's likely scouting the more rugged regions of that province as a future Survivor base.

Burnett is still reluctant to shoot a winter Survivor -- who wants to see babes such as Amber or Jenna in parkas? -- so Burnett needs to wait until next summer to tape the game in warm weather in Canada.

Burnett, though, already has decided to bring one of his ace shows to Canada. He recently partnered with a Quebec broadcaster to produce a French-language version of The Apprentice.

"We haven't picked our Quebec version of Donald Trump yet," Burnett said, "but we're looking."

For the record, "You're fired!" in French is "Tu es congedie."

Report: 'Survivor' producer Mark Burnett says eleventh season may film in Canada

 By Steve Rogers, 07/16/2004

Is Survivor producer Mark Burnett seriously considering filming a future edition of the hit CBS series in Canada... or was he simply seeking to placate the local media?

In a report published in yesterday's The Toronto Sun that will no doubt revive similar rumors from several years ago, Sun scribe Bill Brioux reported that Burnett told him that the reality uber-producer is considering filming a future edition of the hit CBS reality series in the Great White North.

According to Burnett, a Survivor edition could be filming in Canada as quickly as Survivor 11, which would air on CBS in Fall 2005. Burnett's disclosure came in response to a question regarding one of Canadian viewers biggest gripes with the series -- its refusal to let Canadians compete in Survivor (a practice that, for the record, is pretty standard among American reality shows.)

According to Brioux, Burnett replied to the question as to whether America's northern neighbors would finally be allowed to compete with a response of "no, but we could be going to Canada for Survivor," and later suggested it could happen as soon as the program's eleventh installment.

Brioux speculates that Burnett might film a Canadian-based Survivor in a remote, rugged part of British Columbia during the bikini-friendly summer season. However, before any Canadians get too excited regarding such a possibility, it's worth noting that Burnett himself is not currently signed to produce an eleventh edition of the show -- his most current contract, signed this past winter after a bit of intentional made-for-publicity hardball drama, only runs through Survivor 10. It is however expected that CBS, which holds the rights to create additional Survivor editions without Burnett's involvement, will agree to an additional extension with Burnett by sometime next spring.

Survivor: Vanuatu, the ninth edition of the series that is currently filming on the Pacific island chain near Fiji, will air this fall.
