Debating issues with veteran newswomen, a lawyer and a comedian every morning could be considered a challenge.

But how long could ``The View'' crew - Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Joy Behar and Barbara Walters - last in the Australian outback with only rice for dinner?

``I get to have breakfast before `The View,' so that's a plus. There's a lot more laughing that goes on with `The View' than the Australian outback,'' said Boston College graduate Elisabeth Filarski Hasselbeck, one of the final four on CBS' ``Survivor: The Australian Outback'' and the most recent addition to ABC's weekday gabfest (at 11 a.m. on WCVB, Ch. 5).

One advantage of ``The View'': So far, the talk-show gig hasn't made Filarski Hasselbeck suffer hair loss or flashbacks.

``Certain sensory moments will send me back,'' she said of ``Survivor.'' ``Kerosene. The feel of rice in my mouth. The smell of fire. It will stop me in my tracks.''

The 27-year-old Providence native was in town recently to discuss ``The View'' and other projects with fellow Eagle, husband Tim Hasselbeck, now a quarterback with the Washington Redskins.

``They say socially, never talk about religion and politics, and we talk about both,'' Filarski Hasselbeck said. ``Sometimes, after a hot topic, I'm shaking from the adrenaline.''

She said the biggest challenge on ``The View'' so far has been breaking into the rhythm her co-hosts have established. ``And not letting my nerves get the best of me,'' she said.

Like that other youthful daytime personality, Kelly Ripa, Filarski Hasselbeck juggles multiple commitments: marriage, hosting ``The Look for Less'' on the Style Network, co-hosting ``The View'' and rehashing her ``Survivor'' experiences when called upon.

When not in New York City taping ``The View,'' Filarski Hasselbeck commutes to Los Angeles to tape ``The Look for Less.''

The Hasselbecks say they never planned on balancing two high-profile careers in different cities.

``We both probably thought we'd be living in Boston and working here. When we started dating, she didn't see herself being in TV,'' Tim Hasselbeck said.

``We always knew Tim would play football. I can design anywhere,'' Filarski Hasselbeck said. Before landing the spot on ``Survivor,'' she designed shoes for Puma in Boston.

She turned down the opportunity to be part of the recent ``Survivor All-Stars'' due to scheduling conflicts. If producers were to come knocking again, she said, she would do it on one condition: ``Only if I could bring Tim with me.''

     ``And I approved,'' he replied.

Could there be a ``Survivor: All-Star Couples'' in the future?

``We'll take on Rob and Amber,'' Filarski Hasselbeck said jokingly of the romance that blossomed between fellow ``Australian Outback'' alum Amber Bkrich and ``Boston'' Rob Mariano while on ``All-Stars.''

``You smell so badly that when the cameraman walks over you can smell soap. They must really be in love is all I say.''

Juggling ``The View'' and ``The Look for Less'' is hectic, but it's nothing like the ``Survivor'' six-week exile.

`` `Survivor' would have to be the worst part,'' said Hasselbeck of their long-distance relationship. ``We were totally shut off from communication.''

Besides, ``The View'' has perks for spouses.

``It's like date night every time she goes to a screening,'' Hasselbeck said.

Marriage also has evened the playing field for Filarksi Hasselbeck when it comes to squabbling with Meredith and the girls.

``I've been married for two years and Star is on the cusp of getting married. It's like I'm the new, young girl, but at times I can give advice.''
