What Have We Learned?  Advice For Future Survivors

By Garbotalk, 12-29-04

Now that 2004 is coming to a close and All Stars Survivor 8 and Vanuatu Survivor 9 are over, what have we learned?  It seems that the end of the year is an appropriate time to reflect on lessons learned this year, so I thought I’d do a review to help future survivors prepare for their adventure of a lifetime.  Here are the top ten ideas to keep in mind, should you decide to apply to be on a future edition of Survivor.

1.  Read and learn all you can about survival on the island chosen.  Scout was the most important person on her tribe early on due to her knowledge of Vanuatu and survival skills.  She knew what plants were edible, how to build a shelter and how to trap fresh water.  This was vital to her game and her team’s success, not to mention the comfort of all those around her.  Too many players are clueless about the minimal surviving skills necessary.  Sure, it’s a social game, but it also requires skills.  Richard and Rupert fished.  Kathy found mussels, crabs and other shell animals for food.  Rob could build a super shelter.  If you are going on the adventure of a lifetime, for goodness sake, learn all you can about survival.  And if someone can learn to make a fire in a humid environment on the first day, they’ll earn the respect of all previous survivors who somehow couldn’t manage this feat.

2.  Find allies early.  It used to be that survivors had the opportunity to get to know one another for at least a few days before starting to make alliances.  This is a luxury that can no longer be afforded.  In All Stars, loose alliances were made before they even arrived on the boat!  Many people who had planned to ally with friends from previous seasons were surprised to find out that they were left out of the loop.  Ethan hoped his relationship with Lex before would help him this time.  It didn’t.  Lex thought his relationship with Tom would help him go further too.  Wrong.  In Vanuatu , the fat five alliance on the men’s tribe was born on day one.  Had the older, less physically strong members not joined an alliance against the young bucks, Chris surely would have been the first one voted out rather than the eventual winner.  Once your tribe is created, an alliance needs to be formed the very first day, or you may be left behind.

3.  Have a plan, but be flexible.  It’s important to have a game plan for yourself, whatever your situation is.  Once Ami found out she would be on an all woman team, she made a plan to ally with women only and stick with them to the end, and it nearly worked for her.  Others intend to lay low and go under the radar as much as possible as Scout did.  Amber intended to latch onto someone strong and remain under their wing while they take the heat as she did with Jerri her first season playing in the Outback.  This time, she chose a better partner in Rob, and it won her the game.  Jenna ruthlessly intended to vote out all previous million dollar winners first, which worked well in her favor when Tina and other winners were ousted early.  Chris intended to be nice to everyone, lie as often as necessary and not believe anyone.  It worked.  There are many paths to the finish line, but you need a plan to get there.

4.  Don’t trust or take betrayal personally.  Wearing your heart on your sleeve is a poor move in survivor.  You reveal your weaknesses and become vulnerable. Making real friends and trusting them is a luxury in this game that no one can afford.  Julie’s heart was broken when Chris betrayed her, and she wasn’t the first one to experience this.  As difficult as it is, you must remain detached enough to not let things hurt you personally.  Betrayal is a large part of Survivor and should be expected.  The danger is in finding a comfort zone that blinds you to the realities of your situation.  If you are betrayed, you must shake it off and move ahead, or you’re doomed.  Eliza was betrayed over and over, yet remained in the game.  She knew she was vulnerable and never lost sight of the fact that friendships won’t save you, alliances will.

5.  Be friendly and don’t offend.   Alienating others with a poor attitude is a quick way out of the game; just ask Mia.  As hard working as Twila was, her negative attitude offended so many others that it lost her the game.  Likewise, Rob’s take no prisoners attitude soured many on the All Star jury, and he was denied the win.  The reason Chris skated by over and over was because he was likeable, plain and simple.  Everyone enjoyed being around him.  He had a good sense of humor and he encouraged others.  Sure, for the most part, it was an act, but it worked.  Rupert was also likeable and it brought him far.  If for no other reason, you must remember that those who leave the game will ultimately decide whether you win or lose.  You must keep that in mind as you betray them.  The kind words you said on day 12 could make a difference on day 39.

6.  Work hard and never be lazy.  When in a large group situation, those most valued are the ones who contribute something obvious.  Rupert provided fish all the way to the final four.  Scout kept the fire going and found food.  Twila cooked and fetched food and water.  Rob built things and cut fire wood.  Chris climbed trees and gathered wood.  It doesn’t matter what you contribute, but doing something, anything to make yourself vital is essential to longevity.  Many times, laziness is cited as the reason for voting against a player at tribal council.

7.  Don’t be indecisive.  It is nice to be sought by several groups of people to join their alliance because it puts you in the driver’s seat.  However, you must not let it go to your head.  If you are invited to an alliance, accept it, or become a target.  Even if you must lie to one group or another as Chris and Rob did, it is better than avoiding making a decision at all. Waffling will ensure your destruction.  Dolly’s indecisiveness caused her to be the first woman evicted from her team.  Had she been willing to commit to one group or another, she would have lasted much longer in the game.

8.  Don’t mess with Jeff.  Too many players enjoy bantering with Jeff Probst at challenges and tribal council, to their detriment.  Jeff has seen the tapes, never forget that.  He knows what is going on in your camp, and will try to expose hidden agendas if he can.  If you have an alliance that is hidden, he will hint at it.  If you are vulnerable, he’ll ask you how confident you are in your position.  It’s his job, and the viewers fun to see players set up for a fall.  Pay close attention to what Jeff asks you at TC.  He is telling you where you stand.  When asked questions at tribal council, the best responses are optimistic or humble replies, even if they are lies.  The worst thing you can do is engage in a cat fight like Eliza and Twila, or act cocky like Leann and Ami.  If you alienate Jeff, he could become your worst nightmare.

9.  Don’t preen for the cameras.  Sure, you’re on a highly rated television show and you feel special.  But if you spend all your time trying to pose and strut for the cameras, the other people on your tribe will pick up on it and get irritated with you, if not angry.  Everybody wants their 15 minutes of fame.  If you hog the limelight, you will be resented, pure and simple, and that resentment could turn into eviction from the tribe.  Nobody trusted model John, or chatty Shii Ann.  Yes, do your required confessionals.  But don’t become a drama queen just to get noticed.  Rupert’s roars were hated by the other players.  So was Mia’s challenge winning dance.  There will be time for television moments, but don’t go overboard basking in the limelight in front of the others.

10.  Don’t get caught plotting.  Survivor is a game of subterfuge.  It is important to hold your cards close to your vest and not reveal your hand.  Sneakiness is a part of the game, but if you get caught plotting, you will be doomed.  Lisa was seen chatting with Travis and Rory too often, and not trusted.  She was assumed to be plotting, and taken out early because of it.  Travis tried to give a signal to Chris at a challenge that was seen by Ami.  He was evicted immediately, even though Rory was the intended target.  Kathy started plotting with the ladies while being overheard by Richard who confronted her on it.  Eliza tried to sway Chris as Twila listened in, then interrupted them.  Plot and plan, backstab and betray, but do it discreetly or you’re out of there.
