Survivor Fans Rank the Seasons
January 10, 2005

By Garbotalk

There is no doubt that Survivor is a phenomenon.  It has achieved great popularity and a large fan base after nine highly rated seasons in the past four and a half years.  Internet fans are some of the most outspoken fans imaginable.  There are many sites dedicated to discussion and analysis of all things Survivor.  Just like sports fans, Survivor fans enjoy debating who the best or worst contestant was, and which season was their favorite.  Of course, if you went by the ratings, you would have one answer.  But true fans put into context all of the various nine seasons, comparing and contrasting to come up with their own order of favorites.  With this in mind, I decided to take a poll at several popular EZ Board fan sites to rank the seasons and find out which was the greatest season of them all?

Thankfully, many people responded to my threads.  Some just ranked the season in order of preference, while others wrote long, detailed descriptions of what they liked and didn’t like about each one.  A few actual players from Survivor weighed in as well, under a ghost nick like everyone else.  Some enjoyed discussing it so much that they voted several times, with a different order each time!

Once I received enough opinions for my poll, I had to narrow the field a bit.  Only people who had seen at least 8 of the 9 seasons had votes counted, since they were best able to judge.  Also, anyone who gave opinions but no numbered rankings weren’t counted.  Saying they loved one season and hated another while all the rest were about equal didn’t qualify. I only used opinions that were fully thought out.  A few people had ties, considering two seasons of equal worth.  If they thought place 2 and place 3 were equal, then I would give both seasons a rating of 2nd place, then the next choice would be rated 4th, and so on.  Thus, my totals weren't nice neat rounded numbers, because of the effect of ties.   For those who voted twice, I only counted the second vote, considering it to be their revised opinion.  After I had 100 acceptable votes, I cut it off and started compiling the results.  Drum roll please.

Ninth Place, Season 5 - Survivor: Thailand

Survivor Thailand seemed like a good idea.  It was in a beautiful tropical setting and had a wide variety of players, as per usual.  After four previous seasons, fans began to anticipate certain things.  There would be alliances, there would be a merge, some would get along, while others wouldn't.  It started to become, well, a little predictable.  What would have made the season more memorable, a charismatic winner, personalities overflowing or intriguing situations didn’t happen.

Brian Heidik was a detached, cool as a cucumber strategist who remained calm throughout.  He lied with such ease and ability, that every single player believed him completely, and were taken out like lambs to the slaughter, one by one.  Interesting players like Robb were kicked out early, due to his erratic behavior.  There was also a rather icky he said-she said "grinding" incident between Ted and Ghandia that was controversial.  Sexual harassment, or crying wolf, whichever the case may be depending on whose side you believed, was not entertaining.  The one person most people enjoyed, Shii Ann, was tricked by Jeff into thinking she had merged with the other team.  She proceeded to try to make new alliances and was surprised to find that there was no merge after all.  Most thought this wasn't a twist as much as a dirty trick.

However, season five had some merit. As Zonker stated eloquently, "But at least Thailand's winner was the one who best played the game.  Hell, he was about the only one playing the game.  But, love him or hate him, Brian deserved that check.  Also, I really loved Shii Ann, Erin and Ken.  And watching Clay get beat at the end was worth the agonizing wait."

Eighth Place, Season 8 - Survivor: All Stars

All Stars was the most highly anticipated edition of Survivor by the fans. Who wouldn't want to see the best of the best compete in order to find the ultimate survivor?  Pearl Islands location was terrific and had proven itself as a beautiful and comfortable choice to host the competition. Excited fans flooded the sites with what ifs, who's the best, and who will win?  Then the cast announcement finally came. Fans were perplexed. Amber?  Shii Ann?  Jerri?  Boston Rob?  Where were Brian, Vecepia, and Sandra, winners from Thailand, Marquesas and Pearl Islands?  Why were there so many players from the first three seasons, and so few from some others?  People expected the final two from each season, or at least all the winners involved and were let down.  It appeared that Mark Burnett preferred to cast interesting, attractive, or popular people rather than the top competitors from each season.  The fans hoped for the best.

All Stars was full of egos.  Every player there knew one another, save recent player Rupert.  They had already gone through the process and had raised the ante for themselves.  Plotting was intense, resentment strong and greed unhinged.  As Mark Burnett later admitted, "This game wasn't meant to be played by friends."  Add to that not one, but two quitters from the game, unheard of.  Friendships were tested and destroyed, people broke down in tears and there was so much viciousness at the final tribal council that fans were disillusioned with their former Survivor heroes. It wasn't pretty.

Yet there were some bright spots.  Watching Boston Rob Mariano go full out on all challenges and competitions was a sight to behold.  Amber's cool manipulation of Rob through intense flirting eventually revealed a real love blossoming between them.  The game was played very strategically, and very well.  Though Amber Brkich was the least likely to win based on her previous efforts, she soundly defeated the others to become the best of the best and win a million dollars.  Many felt Rob was robbed, but hey, he got the girl, so it wasn't all bad.  And America continued its love affair with Rupert, voting to give a second million dollar purse to him. WarningSpoilerAhead said what many fans felt at the time.  "I'm a sucker for the novelty of having players from different games come together. Seeing Richard Hatch with Colby Donaldson, Kathy O'Brien and Jenna Morasca made for entertaining television.  The star power was definitely there with Jerri Manthey, Lex van den Berghe, Rob Mariano, Sue Hawk and Rob Cesternino. Even lil' Shii Ann Huang managed to make the cut."

Seventh Place, Season 3 -  Survivor: Africa

Beautiful Africa was chosen for the third season of Survivor for their camp grounds, inside of a protected wilderness area filled with animals.  It was the first time Mark Burnett chose an inland location, away from the usual beaches (and bikinis), and probably the last time as well.  Though exotic and beautiful, Africa held an unforgiving, dusty climate, which roasted the players in heat by day and frightened them with lion roars by night.  But most of the cast was terrific with a variety of players and strategies.

Because this was the third edition, the players were seasoned.  They knew alliances of numbers would keep them in the game, even if they were  lazy and slept all day instead of helping around camp as some of the younger players did.  Fans cheered when the first big twist happened and players were traded between the two tribes.  Suddenly it was a whole new ball game.  Unfortunately, the dehydration, horrible insect bites and lack of food took a heavy toll on the players.  They appeared to waste away before our eyes. Watching people suffer wasn't very entertaining.

The best part of Survivor: Africa was the interactions of the threesome of Lex, Tom and Ethan.  Lex, his paranoia about Kelly and utter control of his tribe was interesting to watch.  Eventual winner Ethan Zohn's hackysack play with HIV infected African children touched everyone.  Tom's dancing and general goofiness was fun.  Clarence stealing beans, Silas being traded and screwed by the twist, and Brandon and Frank's movie date were all very memorable.  Pamja said in her review of all the seasons, "Great characters, very entertaining people. Interesting rewards, worthy final three and winner.  Location was the main drawback."

Sixth Place, Season 9 -  Survivor: Vanuatu

Mark Burnett learned from Africa something he never forgot.  Pretty girls in bikinis and handsome studs competing on beautiful beaches equal ratings.  Survivor Vanuatu had all of that, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions too! The breathtaking scenery and wildlife videography will no doubt earn Mark Burnett another Emmy.  The rich local culture with tribes living the same way as they have for hundreds of years proved the location was perfect.  Also, the history of cannibalism and conflict with sea-faring merchants added mystique.

The cast had some interesting variety.  Two open lesbians, Ami and Scout, joined the all woman tribe with a strong girl power enthusiasm.  There were also two cancer survivors, Scout and Chad, whose leg was amputated at the knee.  An FBI agent, an army drill sergeant and a male model shared the all man tribe and added interest.  On paper, it seemed a very appealing cast.  However, the game was turned upside down when both teams, the men and the women, chose to evict the younger, stronger players while keeping the older, less athletic ones.  With 18 players, there was a five to four imbalance on each team, allowing for a dog pile of older and wiser against younger and stronger players. Eventually the arguing set in with name calling, food hiding and paranoia.  Twila and Eliza didn't get along, nor did Rory and Sarge, Ami and Scout, the list goes on.

The eventual winner, Chris Daugherty, lied so much to so many people that tribal council was full of tears, again, just like All Stars.  Many thought hard working and manipulating Twila was robbed, due to unfair resentments.  The overthrow of the woman's team gave many fans a certain satisfaction.  Also, the idea that the man first targeted by his team to be evicted somehow lucked into winning the whole thing had fans cheering for the underdog.  Ami's manipulations, Julie's nude sunbathing, Bubba getting caught signaling the other team and Rory's threats to burn down Yasur added a lot of entertainment.  Visa18 summed it up nicely. "I think it was fairly well cast and the cast didn't follow the normal rules (they booted the Strong men 1st!!  Yay for the fat and ugly!  I can be on Survivor!)  I think Chris deserved the win and I love it when people come back from a huge disadvantage."

Fifth Place,  Season 6  -  Survivor: The Amazon

The choice to go to the Amazon was a great one.  Beautiful water falls, lush jungles and varied creatures provided a stunning backdrop.  This was the first time the tribes were divided into all male and all female groups. Jenna Morasca, the youngest player ever chosen to participate intended to use her bikini model beauty to win over the men.  Yet she was stuck with a team of women and still eventually prevailed, becoming the ultimate survivor.  This was the season of the young cute girls ganging up against the older women, dumping them one after another.  The men couldn't get along as the alphas puffed up and tried to intimidate one another.  The funny, geeky Rob Cesternino manipulated and outplayed most of the men on his team in a very entertaining way.  Only Matthew, Rob's sidekick with great physical skills outlasted him, along with eventual winner Jenna.

Fans were torn by the overt sexuality of the younger girls and open nudity.  Some cheered at the peanut butter and chocolate moment, while others felt there was too much preening for the cameras and attention seeking behavior.  Rob's ouster after all his hard work to get to the final three was disappointing, though some felt he was a show boat.  Jenna was not well liked by the fans, though was quite popular with the players from her season.  Somehow, that didn’t translate in the editing as her role as "the bitch" was maximized, while her endearing moments hidden from the audience.  Everyone was shocked she won, which was probably the reason for the throw-us-off editing, but it didn't ring true.  For the fans, Matthew, the stand up, challenge winning guy who gave up his reward for everyone and never had a mean word to say about anyone was robbed as much as Rob.

This was the season with the first deaf player, Christy. Butch's fire burned down the camp, Janet was accused of smuggling in food, Joanna thought the immunity idol was, well, idolatry, and Roger barked orders at everyone.  Deena tried to manipulate Rob, who instead turned the tables on her and got her voted out.  The men oogled the women, the women pined for the men, and the battle of the sexes was never more pronounced.  All the bragging and braying in the world by the men's tribe couldn't win them a challenge as they lost over and over.  It was a fun season. HoosierGal opinioned, "I thought the gals vs. guys split was inspired. The Amazon women came out of the gate strong.  That was mostly because the majority of the guys were totally incapable of keeping their brain in the game when they were around the three hot chicks.  I think it was awesome that the women were catching their own fish, which is something NO ONE on Vanuatu ever got the hang of.  My favorite moment was when Christy got switched and her new tribe made her feel so welcome that it just lifted her spirit."

Fourth Place, Season 4 - Survivor: Marquesas

After the harshness of Africa the season prior, the choice of Marquesas was quite a contrast with its gorgeous beaches, dense jungles and beautiful water falls.  Who could forget the arrival of the players as buxom Sarah sat on her raft floating like queen Cleopatra herself as her teammates pushed the raft to shore?  This was the year that brought us brassy Boston Rob, cagey Kathy, hunky Hunter and tender Paschal.  The outspoken in her faith Mormon Neleh as well as praying Vecepia and Sean contrasted with outspoken Patricia, sneaky Zoe and irritated John.

Yet fans were stunned by the nearly invisible presence of the eventual winner, Vecepia Towery.  It's not that she didn't deserve to win.  But her scheming and planning was so well hidden from the audience through editing choices that it came out of no where.  All along, it looked like Kathy would win, or perhaps Neleh.  Unfortunately, an exposed breast that she tried to cover up caused Kathy to lose her balance in the final challenge.  Neleh and Vecepia made a deal to cut Kathy out of the final two, even though both had lead her to believe she would be their choice.  Cut throat play by very vocal about their faith Christians rubbed some fans the wrong way.

However, fans adored it when the overconfident Rotu four were ousted one by one by the remaining rag tag bunch of players who could barely tolerate one another, yet managed to work together in a common goal of survival.  Kathy started out a loner, but ended up winning the hearts of fans as she overcame obstacles to avoid eviction time and again.  Rob and Sean's friendship was as enjoyable to watch as the fighting between Hunter and Rob.  Alliances formed and crumbled often, surprising fans.  Kathy willingly peed on nurse John's hand after he was stung by a sea urchin in order to neutralize the acids and relieve his pain.  There was the dreaded purple rock that sent Paschal packing.  The interpersonal relationships were fascinating to watch.  From Catspasms, "Up until now, there had always been one tribe that dominated. Marquesas totally ripped that to pieces, with the "outcasts" from the original Rotu tribe (Kathy, Neleh, and Paschal) teaming up with the 2 remaining original Maaramus (Sean and Vee) to form a new order…With so many individuals thinking, 'How Can I personally Get Farther?', almost everyone trusted nobody, creating a large amount of unpredictability, resulting in human-made plot twists. For those reasons, I give Marquesas a lot of credit as the first truly excellent season."

Third Place , Season 1 - Survivor: Borneo

The first, the original, the one that started it all, Survivor's original approach to reality television thrilled and delighted viewers and started a love affair with fans everywhere.  Memorable players Richard, Rudy, Sue and Kelly created the first alliance and pagonged Pagong, now an actual verb in the dictionary meaning to vote off players from the opposing tribe one after another.  The hardships of dirty water, biting insects and hunger combined with the strategizing and manipulation required to remain in the  game was inspiring as entertainment.  Richard Hatch showed us how to outwit, outlast and outplay everyone, including a challenge hogging water adventurer Kelly, a tough as nails army retiree Rudy, and a big mouthed truck driver Sue.  No one expected Richard to last a week, much less a season.  His outspoken gay pride and constant nudity drove everyone up the wall.  Yet he provided their food, and didn't get involved in the backbiting, which combined with his manipulations gave him longevity in the game. Everyone expected Kelly to win, but the rats and snakes speech given by Sue at the final tribal council was completely shocking. Somehow, the "fat naked fag" that Richard referred to himself as won the game.  This show blazed to the top of the ratings.

For most Survivor fans, Borneo is the season that hooked them.  But after nine thrilling seasons, its star has begun to fade in comparison.  Watching an entire team voted off one after another, even though they had opportunities to turn the tide had they only voted as a block was frustrating.  Also, the challenges weren't as exciting, the rewards not nearly as rewarding, and the show at times uneven in comparison to later editions.  The difficulty in editing together the thousands of hours of mostly boring footage into compelling television fell on Mark Burnett, and he did a masterful job, but some of the monotony of their life on the beach still came through.  His editing became much more interesting with experience, as you would expect.

Colleenlover, a Borneo fan if ever there was one summed it up nicely. "Well, for me it has nothing to do with the strategies - but the situation and the issues brought up, along with studying human nature.  Sue's character sums it up with, 'Corporate world isn't going to work out here', only by the end of the series being the Vice President of Rich's corporation.  It was Lord of the Flies; it was before all the reality TV mucked up interaction causing everyone to be aware of the camera and hunting for their fifteen minutes of fame. It was a study, and it still holds up beautifully, mainly because it is independent of just game playing. I've seen it many, many times and it still fascinates.  Richard, Colleen, Susan and Rudy - can't beat em.  Although, Gervase, Greg and Gretchen sure hold their own in the memory department."

Second Place, Season 2 -  Survivor:  The Australian Outback

By season two, everything on Survivor was working like a fine oiled machine with a crew hired to cover every contingency required for producing a top television show.  They chose a beautiful location, in the Outback of Australia, home country to Producer Mark Burnett.  The local Aborigines with their rock painting and talented horn blowing added a freshness and cultural perspective that Survivor: Borneo was lacking.  The players cast were filled with personality, and were quite attractive.  Fans adored sweetheart Elisabeth, bitchy Jerri, finger-wagging Alicia and strong-hearted Michael.  The final two winning duo of soccer mom Tina and gentlemanly Colby gave hope to fans that nice guys could come in first instead of last.

Fans had a few bones to pick with the show.  How Colby could choose to take sweetheart Tina to the final two instead of disliked Keith, basically forfeiting the million dollars by this decision, shocked fans.  After all the challenges he won and the leadership he showed, they wanted him to win, but it was not to be.  Some considered Tina's and Colby's attitudes a bit self-righteous when they talked about how "only the people that deserved to be in the final two" were there, meaning themselves.  It was a bit much in the self-congratulating department.

This was the season of burn victim Michael's helicopter to get medical treatment, causing him to leave the game.  Villain Jerri crushed on Colby who tried to be nice but rebuffed her all the same.  Vegetarian Kimmi worried about the chickens being lonely, while tough talking Maralyn bossed everyone around.  Tina jumped into a rushing river to save their supplies and Colby athletically won most every challenge he participated in, either for his team or himself.  The season was glorious.  Madcap03 said it well, "The best drama (pig, floods, Mike falls into fire, Colby steals coral, beef jerky), the best intro, the best location (and diverse, too... it was great to see a reward on the Great Barrier Reef), and the best, most *memorable* cast. I can name all sixteen from Outback before I can name six from Vanuatu, and could go into detail about their character arcs."

First Place, Season 7 -  Survivor:  Pearl Islands

From the first moments of the first episode when Jeff told the survivors to jump out of the boat and swim to shore with nothing but the clothes on their backs, Survivor: Pearl Islands invigorated the series just when people wondered if its appeal had begun to wane.  The gorgeous tropical setting and pirate theme, with lots of footage of the animals and sea creatures added much beauty, symbolism and depth to the editing of the show. And what a cast!  Rupert the loveable skirt wearing pirate, Lillian the boy scout leader, Osten the whiner and pelican hater and Sandra, the mouthy mom all made vivid impressions.  Jonny Fairplay and Burton thought they ran the show and bragged how smart they were all the way out the door. Andrew's leadership of Morgan couldn't save them from losing challenge after challenge to the stronger Drake tribe.  Yet they had solidarity and even stripped while pushing a cannon uphill because Osten's underwear slid off in the mud.  Sandra's fluent Spanish saved her team when bartering in town for goods.  Darrah and Ryan O. were both sweethearts, and the friendships of Lil and Ryan S., Burton and Jon, Rupert and his two gals Sandra and Christa were solid.  It was Survivor at its finest.

There were a few missteps.  Many fans howled at the unfairness of the outcast twist, allowing two previously voted out players, Lil and Burton, to rejoin the game.  The decision by Jon to plan a whopper of a lie in advance of the game with his friend to fool the other players into giving him sympathy was shocking.  It wasn’t until the show aired that the players realized that Jon's dead grandma that he cried and moaned about, getting sympathy from everyone (but Sandra who was on to him) was really not dead at all!  Fans were split as to the ethics of lying, bringing in people from outside the game to fool them.  It drove up ratings as people were determined to see what would happen next!

As a villain, Jon oozed evil, while Rupert, the earnest fisherman of his tribe glowed with honesty.  The contrast made for compelling television.  Rupert stole the unwatched shoes of the other team, confessing that he was a pirate and that's what pirates do.  Crafty Sandra listened in to conversations from others, hiding in the bushes.  Later, she staged an argument to hide the fact that she sabotaged their bucket of fish in protest for Rupert's eviction.  Lil swore she was honest and true like a boy scout leader should be, then lied and backstabbed over and over.  They couldn't have scripted this stuff if they wanted to.  From Indiekid26, "The one season where the person I was rooting for and loved from the beginning actually won…I loved Sandra to death, but I really liked and admired the underdog in Lil.  Sandra remains one of my top 3 favorite Survivor players. You also had love-him-or-hate-him Rupert, the over-the-top villainous antics of Jon.  Not to mention the finale that shocked a lot of us spoiler folks, who were so sure that Darrah would take the cake.  I've never seen a theme work as beautifully as I did the pirate theme in this season.  Arguably the BEST challenges we've seen in any installment.  They were one-of-a-kind."  Survivor: Pearl Islands was pure, Survivor gold.

I think that for me Pearl Islands would be #2

Boreo has to be #1 for me because thats when we truly got to see all aspects of the game without the contestants being able to formulate concrete game plans in advance.
