'Survivor' winner faces tax charges
Richard Hatch, winner of the first season, accused of filing false returns after winning $1 million.
January 18, 2005: 12:50 PM EST

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Richard Hatch, the first winner of hit TV reality show "Survivor," has been charged with filing false tax returns, the office of the U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island announced Tuesday.

The office said Hatch filed a false income tax return that omitted more than $1 million he received for winning the first season of "Survivor." Hatch was also charged with failing to report approximately $321,000 paid to him by a Boston radio station.

According to a statement, the production company behind the hit CBS show paid Hatch $10,000 in August 2000 for appearing on the final episode of the first season and $1,000,000 after being declared the winner.

The district attorney's office alleged that, in November 2002, Hatch filed a false personal income tax return for the 2000 tax year by failing to report the $1,010,000 paid to him by the production company, Survivor Entertainment Group.

In addition, the district attorney's office said that Hatch was paid by a Boston radio station WQSX-FM for co-hosting its radio program "The Wilde Show." But he allegedly failed to report the $321,139 that the radio station paid to him for his appearances.

Hatch isn't really as bad as he was portrayed. He is arrogant and cocky, but not the villain he was on survivor. He would never hurt Chris, and I'm hoping that this was genuinely a mistake and he won't go to prison. Come on, who would you rather see in prison, Hatch Michael Jackson?

You also have to remember that he does have a son. And I think that would be terrible for his son to be without his father. That's not right. There are people out there who get away with worse crimes, and we're worried about Richard Hatch?  Roll Eyes That's not right at all.

I agree with Puff.  How in the world did he think he could get away without reporting a $1 million income?  Roll Eyes

I don't know, that was awfully stupid of him. But my question is, why did it take the IRS almost 5 years to notice? I mean, he's only THE MOST FAMOUS Survivor winner ever!  Roll Eyes

Anyway, what he did was wrong, but does he deserve to go to jail for it? I don't think so. Go after the REAL criminals, why don't you. Stop worrying about people like Richard Hatch and Martha Stewart, for crying out loud.  Roll Eyes

Wait a minute.  The article didn't say what his punishment will be.  I wouldn't be surprised if he just ended up paying a huge fine.

Hatch to Plead Guilty to Tax Evasion
Jan 18, 1:53 PM EST

The Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - Richard Hatch, a Rhode Island resident who became a millionaire when he won the first-ever "Survivor" series, has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of tax evasion, for filing false tax returns.

Federal prosecutors charged that Hatch, 43, failed to report his $1.01 million winnings from the CBS show, and did not report another $321,000 he was paid by a Boston radio station.

The penalty could be up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine for each charge.

However, as part of the plea agreement filed in federal court, the U.S. Attorney's office said it would recommend a lesser sentence.

Hatch is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Providence on Monday.

The charges were announced Tuesday by the U.S. Attorney's office. The details of the plea agreement appeared in court documents, which were signed last week by Hatch and filed Tuesday.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Survivor Entertainment Group paid Hatch $10,000 in August 2000 for appearing on the final episode of the reality show and $1 million for being declared the show's winner. Prosecutors allege that in November 2002, Hatch filed a false personal income tax return for the 2000 tax year by failing to report the $1.01 million.

Prosecutors also said that Hatch failed to report income he earned during appearances on WQSX-FM in Boston between January and December 2001.

A message left at Hatch's Newport home was not immediately returned.

From Deena Bennett

We are responsible for said taxes and have to sign an agreement that we understand this. Legally, CBS covers themselves very well.

Tax evasion is the crown jewel of the white collar prosecution arena and very difficult to defend. His best bet, if this is true, is to make a deal and just pay back the $$$$ (what with penalties and compounded interest he would only owe say 2 mill!). And who knows what else they have, book earnings, promotional appearances etc. The government really has a lot of power when it comes to this sort of thing.....wasn't it tax evasion that eventually brought down Al CaponeHuh?

Hatch really is a very nice guy so I hope it works out for him.

Okey Dokey.  Now, that article that Rhune posted DID mention prison time.  Somehow, I don't see him going to prison, though.

I don't like him, but I would hate to see him in jail. I think all the Hatch supporters would be staging a protest in the near future.

Hatch is the one who should remember he has a son Roll Eyes
When you win a prize, you pay the tax, FIRST!
Hatch should have thought about the son when he did several things, on I won't mention here!

When you play, you pay!  None of us would be excused from paying oour taxes!
So what if he's Richard Hatch the first survivor winner, big deal!

At the most he will probably get a huge fine.  I doubt he will do any jail time.
