Highlights of Tom's Guest Appearance on "Live with Regis and Kelly"
(Transcript by SurvivorFever.net 5.17.05)

Segment 1:

Regis:  Congratulations.  Oh boy, what a popular man.

Kelly:  I got really excited for you.  I was moved.

Tom:  Yeah what a moment.  I was sitting there, I couldn't even...

Kelly:  Were you sick to your stomach?

Tom:  I was lost in the moment.  I couldn't follow.  I didn't hear what Jeff Probst was saying.  I turned around and looked out at my wife's face and trying to see if Bernadette is smiling or frowning.  I see the letters coming up and the names and I'm not hearing everything.  I see the big grin on her face.

Kelly:  We're you planning to lose so that you wouldn't be disappointed?

Tom:  I was guardedly optimistic.  I thought that I played the game clean enough that I was going to get the respect and the jury's votes.  It's a tough thing because the people who are sitting there can blame you as the person who put them in the jury instead of in the final 2 seat.  It's been unpredictable in the past.   I'm a pretty big fan of the show and I've watched it and seen things go awry, but it worked out.

Regis:  Let me tell you a little bit about his background.  He's a NYC guy.  Went to Archbishop Malloy. Now lives in Long Island.  Grew up in Queens.  Been in the fire department all his adult life.

Tom:  20 years.

Regis:  41 years old now.  You are the oldest winner of Survivor.

Tom:  All of a sudden I'm the representation of 40 year olds.  I've been told by people that they stopped coloring their hair because of me. One radio show said "this guy's beaten guys half his age and he's doing so great for a guy who is in his upper 50's."

Regis: So you kicked a little young butt out there?

Tom:  I did.   It just went my way.  I don't think they saw it coming.

Regis:  You did a great job, Tom.

Segment 2:

Regis:  Back with Tom Westman, a Lt. in the NYC fire department.  And right now all the guys are watching at the 108th Ladder?

Tom:  I hope so if they're not out on a run fighting a fire.  Guys, be safe.

Regis:  What was the reaction in the firehouse when you won?

Tom:  I haven't seen the tape yet but I understand they did a live feed from our reunion show and they pulled in the guys from the house right at the win and a couple of the guys had brought their families.  The support from the guys at the firehouse as been unbelievable.

Regis:  Do you owe any of these any money?

Tom:  I did get a call from our house commissary.  Everything in our firehouse is paid from our check.  We all throw in money.  It pays for the TV and the cable and the ketchup.  I did find out I was behind in my house tax.

Regis:  <to Kelly>  You said you saw him with a beard on the show. Take a look and see how you like your Tom.  Do you like your Tom rugged or like this?

Kelly:  I'll take my Tom either way.  Tom is easily the best looking guy to ever come out of Survivor.

Regis:  What do your kids think?

Tom:  I thought they were nonplussed but now I'm finding out from their teachers...Connor is the little guy and he's in preschool..."and these are the shoes I'm going to wear to the finale".  They talk about it nonstop.

Regis:  What would you do without your wife?  She's the one who thought about this and urged you to apply.

Tom:  She is the woman behind the man.

Regis:  She told you how to win this thing?

Tom:  Yes she did.  I was planning who I would model my game after...what past Survivor winners and who had done well.  She was like "just knock it off.  Go be yourself.  Play it as yourself.  They're gonna like you and they're not going to see it coming on the physical end."  And it worked.

Regis:  Have you been back to work yet?

Tom: Sure, yeah.  I was right back after we returned from Palau.  Nobody in Williamsburg recognizes me.  The guys don't care.  They just care how you did at your last fire.

Regis: So what are you going to do with your life, Tom?  Are you going to stay with the fire department?

Tom:  I've got 20 years in now and it's kind of interesting to have that window of opportunity to make a move.  My wife's fear is that I'll want to stay.  Any firefighter's wife, they want you to get out and play it a little safer.  My fear is that I'm not going to find anything that I love as much as this.  I'm going to take baby steps.

Regis:  Congratulations Tom.

Tom:  Thank you so much.
