'Survivor' safely back home
Caryn Groedel had no doubt she would go far on hit show

Solon resident Caryn Groedel was shocked to be chosen as a contestant on CBS TV hit "Survivor: Palau."

But when her team dominated, "I knew I would go far," Groedel said.

"I now know I can go without food, water, clothing and shelter for 36 days," Groedel said. "I know I could be stranded somewhere and provide for myself and my family."

She said that even though "it was difficult. You're hungry and tired. I lived 36 days with a woman (Katie Gallagher) who was difficult to get along with.

"I didn't think I would be great at the challenges, but I knew I'd be nice to everyone," said Groedel, 46, a civil rights lawyer. "Then when I got there and saw how tough the challenges were, I got nervous about my longevity."

It was Grodel's 12-year-old daughter Isabel who urged her to try out for "Survivor."

"We had watched the show from season two," Groedel said. "(Isabel) said I was as good as those people. I wasn't going to do it, but she downloaded the application."

One of the requirements was a three-minute video showing the "Survivor" candidate at different times of the day. Isabel shot the video, and they submitted the application.

Groedel was shocked when "Survivor" producers called her.

"Once I got called for the semi-finals, I thought it would be a good challenge," Groedel said. "I got into it. I could be a good example for women and kids."
