For more than a year, Adidas has been teasing the release of a shoe made almost entirely from discarded plastic fished out of the oceans. It revealed its first prototype of the sustainable sneaker, created in collaboration with environmental organization Parley for the Oceans, in June 2015. Finally, in mid-November, the first mass-produced quantity—7,000 pairs, to be exact—will go on sale, and according to Adidas, that’s just the start. “We will make one million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic in Adidas ZX Flux Damen 2017—and our ultimate Adidas ZX Flux Femme ambition is to eliminate virgin plastic from our supply chain,” Eric Liedtke, an Adidas executive board member responsible for global brands, said in a Nov. 4 statement. The initial batch of sneakers, called the UltraBoost Uncaged Parley, will be made of 95% plastic debris, such as bottles and packaging, that has been reprocessed into a new textile. Parley captured the litter in the coastal areas of the Maldives. The remaining 5% of the sneaker is recycled polyester, and the laces, heel lining, and other parts are made of recycled materials as well. The sneakers also feature Adidas’ popular Boost sole. Adidas’s goal of removing all virgin plastic from its supply chain is ambitious, but certainly worthy. One study concluded the equivalent of 136 billion milk jugs are dumped in the oceans each year, and the Nike Air Max 90 Femme material doesn’t break down. Adidas Superstar Damen More recycling efforts are needed, and since plastic, usually in the form of polyester, is a main component of a great deal of apparel and footwear, Adidas’ project with Parley offers a smart way to turn the problem into a resource. Most running shoes use midsoles made of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam. But Adidas' Boost series of shoes has midsoles made of thermoplastic polyurethane, which is said to be three times more resistant to temperature changes than EVA. Thus, more energy is stored instead of being dissipated as heat. And the Ultra Boost's midsole packs 20 per cent more cushioning foam than normal Boost shoes. Not only was it the most responsive running shoes I've used, I also love its comfort, ventilation and support. For year, Adidas Boost has been the best-selling energy return foam on the Adidas Gazelle Femme market. Sure it’s been well Nike Air Force 1 High Mujer marketed, but Adidas have done a sterling job on designing a range of great products carrying the Boost midsole platform. However, a new kid is on the block… Nike have recently launched their new React foam, a foam with an unusual brief. Is it possible to make a super lightweight energy return midsole that has a pillow-like softness? Well they managed it and now go head to head with the Adidas Boost but which shoe should you choose? Adidas launched Boost in February 2013 and have been riding high on this energy wave since then. We’ve been a fan of the Adidas Ultra Boost and the more stable family member, the Ultra Boost ST since their beginnings and so have thousands of other runners, but they feel and offer something different to the new Epic React from Nike. The first direct comparison is that the Nike Roshe Run Femme Ultra Boost and the Epic React both Nike Air Vapormax Femme sit on one piece of their respective energy return material. That’s full-length technology cushioning. There is no fudging here, no placing a thin layer of energy return material on top of a cheaper EVA slab. No, these guys mean business from the heel through to the toe.
