Nike is hard at it again, adding another brand new Air Max 98 to their already impressive collection. This latest iteration mixes Nike’s always very popular Adidas Eqt Support Adv Dame Wolf Grey colorway on the seismic upper with a visually striking Total Crimson color covering the tongue and laces and highlighted throughout the shoe. The dark grey rubber outsole finishes things off and makes the rest of the Nike Cortez Mujer shoe really pop. The multi-leveled wave aesthetic and full-length visible Air unit is still the same as it was 20 years ago, only now Nike has updated it and started releasing it in a very successful variety of new colorways. After donning a tonal “Team Red” look, Nike‘s Air Max 98 turns up the dial with a bold “AOP” (All-Over Print) pack that’s sure to turn heads. The flashy release includes two colorways of black/white, which debuted in April, and a never-before-seen army green camo version. The black and white version features a high-contrast, geometric print across the upper with a solid black mudguard, Adidas Stan Smith Womens while the camo pair opts for varying shades of army green throughout the entire upper. Both pairs feature embroidered mini Swooshes in orange with yellow trim, reflective 3M piping and the signature Air Max sole unit in Adidas ZX Flux Womens white. The Nike Air Max 98 “AOL” pack is slated for release on May 31 for $160 USD each at Nike’s web store and Swoosh retailers worldwide. For something slicker, check out the new black colorway of the Virgil Abloh x Nike Zoom Fly Mercurial Flyknit. In 1998, Nike was riding high off the massive success of its Air Max 97 and Air Jordan 12 sneakers. The former became an overnight favorite amongst 1.0 sneakerheads; the latter MJ wore in 1997 while winning his fifth NBA title (including that game he played while trying not to ralph all over Scottie Pippen's jersey). But then came the Air Max 98. In the face of high Nike Air Max 90 Mujer expectations for the next edition of the shoe, Nike...kind of put up a brick. The 98s weren't outright hated, but were criticized for looking too similar to the 97, despite their fresh new colorways. As a result, the 98s Nike Air Max Thea Damen became one of Nike's few "forgotten" Air Max sneakers. That all changed when a skate brand from New York took a crack at the silhouette. In 2016, Supreme injected the 98s with rocket-powered hype, doing the shoes up with colors Adidas Stan Smith Damen that drew from Prada Sport kicks of old. And now, twenty years after they first hit shelves, Nike is bringing back the Air Max 98s in their original colorway, known among collectors as the "Gundam" for their resemblance to the anime character. And considering the folks buying hyped-up Nikes today are the ones who were watching Gundam back in the day, the Air Max 98s are poised to become one Nike Cortez Donna of the most coveted sneakers of the year. It's long overdue.
