After Tuesday's male sing-off, which musically wasn't much more ingratiating than the Oompa Loompa chorus from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the woman probably could have had staggered out of bed with strep throat and flu and still managed to squeak out a better performance overall.  
 
Yep, they did, and for the most part their voices were clear and strong, starting with Stephanie Edwards. She strutted onstage and heated things up quickly with Alicia Keys' "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore." Over the next few hours, there were the usual problems with pitch and song selection. (Idol wannabes, let's drop Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me," and steer clear of Celine Dion power ballads too: You don't emit notes, just an echoing string of cavernous zzzzzzs.)  
 
But the night proved an impressive showcase for three talents: Jordin Sparks, who's only 17, has a delicately luscious voice, and could be the most original singer of the women. Melinda Doolittle, the professional backup singer and also the oldest contestant at 29, came on like a powerhouse. And Lakisha Jones was something bigger, a powermansion, performing the ultimate rafter-rattler, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." Yet, you know what? I preferred Doolittle's control, ebullience and energy.  
 
There's no way America could be nutty enough to vote any of those three off.

Did anyone else notice that when Simon was commenting on the girl who looked uncomfortable and walking her dog or somthing that it looked like the girls Dad was about to kick the crap about of Simon?? lol

The girls were SO MUCH BETTER than the guys! A few of them gave really good performances, but I felt that LaKisha and Melinda stood out the most. They did really, really well! I hope they can go all the way!
