Miners Rescued in Pennsylvania

I was so overwhelmed with relief and thankfulness that all 9 miners were recovered in at least fair condition.  What an incredible story that they could all escape the wall of water that cascaded into the mine.

They shared a 1 metre space - and generally held each other standing up with a ledge they could lean on.  They motivated each other to survive and wrote notes to their families.

CNN.com and cbc.ca both have great coverage and photos.

To everyone in Somerset Pennsylvania and to all the rescue team, I applaud you - one and all.

I hadn't seen the news yet this morning, but I'm so happy to hear they all got out. Smiley

a member of my congregation got up in church yesterday during our prayer time to say thanks for their safety.  his own father and grandfather had been miners in the maritimes and it really hit home for him as i imagine it did for many.  i am just so glad that they are all safe now!   :sunny:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The nine Pennsylvania coal miners who were trapped underground for 77 hours have sold the TV and book rights to their story to The Walt Disney Co. for $150,000 each, their lawyer said Saturday.

The deal includes a movie for Disney's ABC network and a book to be published by the Burbank company's Hyperion Publishing division, Pittsburgh attorney Thomas Crawford said in an interview.

Crawford said he received more than 120 offers for the miners' stories.

Well, how bout that...I've always believed some good comes out of all "evil" even if it's sometimes far down the road. Nice to see these guys and their families get a little boost after so much grief and a traumatic experience.

:2cents: Those guys deserve MUCH more, IMO.  These nine plain, ordinary blue collar working men  truly display the best qualities of the American spirit.  It is those signs of character that have made this country great.  I am proud of them for their grit, their attitude and determination, and I am proud of the many men and women who worked around the clock to rescue them.  They have my upmost respect!

. . . .now if we could only instill these same qualities in our politicians in Congress, maybe everyone wouldn't be so self-serving and the special interest groups wouldn't be at the front of the line.
