Digital TV Sets Mandated by '07 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Hoping to speed the television industry into the digital age, the Federal Communications Commission ordered manufacturers Thursday to put digital tuners in all television sets by July 2007. Manufacturers said the decision will raise the price of a TV set by $100 or more, even for consumers who don't want or need the tuners. "The FCC has just imposed a multibillion-dollar annual TV tax on American consumers," said Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Electronics Association. "We don't need a digital broadcast tuner embedded in every new television in order to accelerate the DTV transition." The association plans to challenge the decision, spokeswoman Jenny Miller said. The FCC's jurisdiction over manufacturers is "fuzzy," she said, so a federal court may be willing to undo the vote. The FCC rule, approved on a 3-1 vote, requires manufacturers to add digital tuners to all sets with screens 36 inches or larger by July 2005 and for all sets with screens 13 inches or larger by 2007.
