Man may have contracted West Nile from transplant
August 31, 2002 Posted: 9:47 PM EDT (0147 GMT)

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Health officials said Saturday they are investigating the possibility that a 63-year-old man contracted West Nile virus from a heart transplant or a blood transfusion.

It would be the first time such a method of transmission was recorded, according to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All cases of West Nile virus in the United States have come from contact with a mosquito, according to the CDC.

However, Florida health officials do not believe he could have been bitten by a mosquito because he has been hospitalized for some time.

"In the course of his daily activities, he wouldn't have come in contact with mosquitoes," said Mary Jo Trepka, epidemiology director of the Miami-Dade health department. "It's extremely unlikely he was bitten by a mosquito in Miami-Dade County. ... We're examining other possibilities."

The man has not left Miami-Dade County "for quite some time," she added. She wouldn't be more specific.

There have been no traces of West Nile in Miami-Dade this year. A dead horse with the virus was found in the county in March 2001.

The patient, who was in critical condition Saturday, received a transplanted heart from a Georgia donor, said Jackson Memorial Hospital administrator Carlos Cruz. He wouldn't say when or where the operation occurred.

Georgia has had six confirmed cases of West Nile this year, and two of those patients died, according to the CDC.

Outside Miami-Dade, state officials have placed 11 Florida counties on alert for West Nile, urging residents to take added precautions against mosquito bites.

About 1 percent of those infected with the virus show symptoms, with children and the elderly being the most susceptible. Deaths result about once in 1,000 infections, according to the CDC.

The only other confirmed case of West Nile in Florida this year was a 71-year-old Sumter County resident who developed the virus this month. Health officials believe that patient was infected in Louisiana.

Last year, 12 Floridians were infected with West Nile. None died.

Nationally, at least 555 people in 26 states and the District of Columbia have been infected with West Nile this year, and at least 28 have died, according to the CDC.

3 persons appear to have been diagnosed in the suburbs of Toronto with West Nile virus.  All are elderly.  One person is thought to have contracted the illness in the United States but the other two are thought to have contracted the illness here in Ontario.  These are our first outbreaks of the illness in the Toronto area although birds have been found to have the disease locally.  Yesterday I suddenly took mosquitoes very seriously when we went to our local fair.  I was so surprised to see some mosquitoes still out at this time of year.  It's been a hot summer.

The West Nile Virus has been rampant in Michigan recently.  Just the other day 6 cases were reported (in one single day!) and we hear of a death a week.

I think this article is interesting because I was just wondering if it would be possible to contract the West Nile Virus through contaminated meat.

What if a mosquito infects a cow, before the cow gets any symptoms of illness he is butchered.  Does the virus transport in his meat?  Does it die during the cooking process?

I wish that we had more answers.  This West Nile Virus is pretty scarey.

Baby Contracts West Nile Virus Through Breast Milk

Health officials today confirmed that a Michigan newborn appears to have contracted the West Nile virus through its mother's breast milk, becoming the youngest person on record with the infection, reports HealthScout News.

The child, whose gender has not been released, has no fever and appears to be doing well, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is investigating the case. The infant's mother, who did develop symptoms of West Nile, is believed to have been infected last month by a blood transfusion during delivery. Another Michigan resident came down with the disease after receiving a transfusion from the same donor.

Genetic traces of West Nile turned up in the woman's breast milk late last month, prompting officials to test the baby's blood for evidence of the virus. The woman, a 40-year-old, first-time mother, nursed the baby for more than two weeks before she was diagnosed with the disease.

as a woman who was 40 years old when her first child was born - let me say this person already had alot of stress in her life.  To add to that a blood transfusion during delivery that gave her a transmissible disease that she then passed on to her child by doing the absolutely best thing for her child must have this poor lady pulling her hair out.

I am so glad that mom and baby are staying well despite the infection and this is a good reminder for all of us about mosquito borne illnesses and also about transfusions.

I will add this lady to my prayers today and here's a big hug too.  My goodness I know she needs it.   :grouphug:
