from cbc.ca Jazz giant Lionel Hampton dead at 94 Last Updated Sat, 31 Aug 2002 16:49:34 NEW YORK - Lionel Hampton, the vibraphone virtuoso who broke through racial barriers in the music industry, died on Saturday in New York. He was 94. Known as much for his showmanship as his music, Hampton was a towering figure in jazz, and during his 60-year career he worked with such music greats as Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker and Quincy Jones. He died of heart failure at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York at about 6:15 a.m. Saturday, said his manager Phil Leshin. In 1939, Hampton joined pianist Teddy Wilson as the black half of a quartet with Goodman and Gene Krupa that broke the racial barriers keeping blacks from performing in public with whites.
