Mammogram Information

WASHINGTON (AP) - Radiologists examining mammogram X-rays gave false-positive cancer readings up to 15.9 percent of the time, with the youngest and most recently trained doctors having two to four times the false-positive rate of older radiologists, a study has found.

The study, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that the rate of false-positives could be reduced significantly if radiologists could compare films from previous mamogram screenings.

Dr. Joann Elmore of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle said the rate of false positives are becoming increasingly common in the United States, but it should not discourage women from having annual screenings.

"Mammography is not a perfect test (for breast cancer), but it is the best test we have," said Elmore.

-----

My doctor has always stressed the importance of having my mammorgrams done at the same facility year after year.  He says it is very important that the radiologist have access to previous X-rays in order to compare them with the most recent ones.  The above story just confirms what he has been telling me.

This story reminded me that I am overdue for my mammogram and I need to get one scheduled very soon.  Maybe it will serve as a reminder to someone else who reads this post.  This procedure is one that none of us enjoys, but it is so important to have it done.
We have to look out for one another.  :grouphug:

At what age do you get your first mammogram?  I am 35 and wondering if I should have one done this year.

Cancer runs amuck in my family and my aunt died from Breast Cancer.

My sister (who has a twin who died of cancer, but not breast cancer) started having them done at 35 and her doctor recommended that she has one done every year.  This is because she is an identical twin (identical DNA) so she is at a very high risk of cancer.

So, anyone know what age is recommended? Im dreading this test.

The statistics are sobering: Breast cancer strikes 1 in 8 American women.

But breast x-rays, or mammograms, drastically improve a woman's chance of surviving the disease, says Shaparak Kamarei, M.D., USC associate clinical professor of internal medicine.

"A mammogram is the best tool available for finding breast cancer early, before symptoms appear," says Kamarei. "Breast cancer is asymptomatic for years."

Kamarei recommends that women get their first mammogram done at age 35. Women between 40 and 50 years of age should get a screening every other year, and women over 50, yearly.

"For all women, risk increases after 50," she adds. By age 60, 1 out of 23 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This number shoots up to 1 out of 10 by age 80.

I think I had my first mammogram at age 40, but my doctor had urged me to do so at age 35 and every year thereafter until I finally did it.  I have to admit, I avoided it because I was afraid of the procedure.  I had heard so many horror stories and I just couldn't bring myself to do it.  It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be and the peace of mind that comes from knowing everything is okay with "the girls" was well worth it.  I was really stupid for putting it off because my mother had breast cancer over 20 years ago (she is still going strong at age 85).  So, Kramer, I would strongly urge you to make arrangements for your first mammogram soon.  The link that Eric posted is great, check it out if you haven't already.

Speaking of Eric, thank you for jumping in there on this topic, its good to know that a man is interested in this subject.  The men in our life need to be informed and supportive where mammograms are concerned.

I actually didn't know, though 35 seemed reasonable.   Google is a wonderful thing. Wink  I believe that the standard approach with a strong family history of cancer is to be more aggressive in screening, so annual mammograms would probably be advisable for both of you.

i had my first mammogram at 35 ( baseline).. my mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer at the age of 36 so they have been very careful with me. i had one once a year after that and at one point had them every 6 months because of some unusual calcifications they found... i  was back to once a year when i had a scare last year where i had a lumpectomy done ( it was not malignant)..  mammograms are wonderful tools that really can save our lives.. as terrified as i am to get one every year, i am more terrified of not getting one...i'll be thinking about you kramer when i schedule mine for next month.. ( sheesh i just had one 3 months ago, blah.. )

Ultrasound Can Catch Cancers Missed in Dense Breast Tissue

Women who have dense breast tissue may benefit from having an ultrasound when receiving breast cancer exams, reports a new study.

Research presented today at a conference of the American Medical Association describes that in traditional mammography, fatty tissue shows up as being dark, but dense tissue appears white. And since cancers appear white on film, there is a chance they can be obscured on dense tissue mammograms.

In ultrasound imaging, however, cancers appear as dark spots, so they can be more easily detected in dense tissue, reports CNN.

The researchers stress that ultrasounds should not replace mammography, and point out that only mammography can detect if women have dense breast tissue in the first place.

But in comparing cancer detections after mammograms with those found after ultrasounds among 13,547 women, the researchers say ultrasounds were able to pick up more than 200 cancers that had been missed by mammography alone.

today's Globe and Mail has an entire section on women's health.  Including a section on Mammography.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/GIS.Servlets.HTMLTemplate?current _row=1&tf=tgam/search/tgam/SearchFullStory.html&cf=tgam/search/tgam/SearchFullStory.cfg&configFileLoc=tgam/config&encoded_keywords=mammography&option=&start_row=1&start_row_offset1=&num_rows=1&search_results_start=1&query=mammography

It is interesting, I have been avoiding reading this thread thinking it does not apply to me.  There is so much medical dispute about whether mammograms save lives or not.

In Canada mammograms are not recommended until age 50.  I was surprised when my sister had her first mammogram at age 35 in the USA (when she lived in Michigan).

I am going to book an appointment with me doctor today and enquire about getting a mammogram.  I am 44 years old and in this article this morning it says that in Canada mammograms are optional for women between 40 and 50.  I think I am going to opt "in" and have one.

The article explains that the prevailing view is that mammograms do save lives.

Thanks for the reminder IrishLass.  I'll report back with an update as to whether my doctor will order one or not, how long I have to wait for the test and if I do have the test what it was like.
