Warning about a drug for pregnancy induction

American's stand alone on their approval of the drug Misoprostol (misoprostyl?) for inducement of pregnancy.  It is an off label use for a drug normally used for stomach ulcers.

Canadian news has a program on this drug.  It has caused too frequent and too strong uterine contractions that

At least two Canadian hospitals are NOT following the voluntary guidelines not to use misoprostyl.

It is much less expensive for the hospital.  But what woman would choose a shorter labour if it meant that the drug was riskier.

The doctor in Laval quebec says that we need to prove the risk - "shouldn't we first show it's safe??!"

This drug causes in some women hypercontraction of the uterus, uterine rupture, and both of these can lead to death of the baby and the mother respectively.

The british royal college of obstetricians says no.  The scandanavian obstetricians say no.  Canada has voluntary guidelines they say not to use it.

On a per dose basis it's much cheaper for the hospital!  but wait aren't we talking about risks for patients.  The good is for the hospital and the health care system in Canada -  :yikes:

Be sure you know what is being recommended and please discuss with your doctor in advance.

There have not been enough studies and make sure all the risks are explained.  Many women do use it without consequence but the dosing is still not fully investigating according to this news report.   There are other options for induction.

Both my labors were induced due to them being high risk pregnancies in the last trimester, but they used Pitocin (which I'm assuming is different from this drug) to induce.  There are certainly pros and cons to inducing (in both my cases, I had no choice).  The primary difference between inducing and not inducing is that when you are induced, your contractions don't build up gradually allowing you to build a tolerance to them over the course of several hours.  You go straight from only a few sporadic contractions to heavy contractions and skip the building up stages...well the building up stage happens but it's like all of 10 minutes.  Labor was faster, but much more intense.  With my second labor I was lucky enough to get given the epidural before they started the pitocin.   I would not recommend doing natural birth if you are facing needing to have your labor induced, because of the fact that you don't build up to it.

i was told this drug can cause death.. now i know it can... i dont know why america continues to allow drugs into their hospitals that KILL.. oh i know why its cheaper for them.. so why care for the patient.. with my first child i had her at HOME with a midwife with no COMPLICATIONS at all. i was in labor for 13 hours.. i was able to allow my god given body the chance to do what  a God created it to do with out any harmful drugs that could have killed me or my daughter.. she was not given to a nurse and taken away from me she stayed in my arms for bout thirty mins then was taken to the bathroom to get cleaned up.. and then brought back to me.. its disgusting how many c-sections and induced births i see and hear bout.. dr's no longer care bout the patient and the wellbeing of the child only themselves and their pocket book... for any woman reading this that are pregnant please research the effects of c-sections and look up a midwife in your town before you go through with your birth.. do whats natural.. God made us this way for a reason

My wife and I use sex to induce pregnancy.

However, to induce labor, well, this drug program sounds pretty dangerous.  I hope folks research all options BEFORE they get to the point of needing to induce labor.
