Plane chartered
by senator crashes

All 8 aboard dead; unknown whether Wellstone was aboard

ASSOCIATED PRESS

EVELETH, Minn., Oct. 25 —  A plane chartered by Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., crashed Friday east of the Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport, and authorities said all eight people aboard died. It was not known whether the senator was aboard.

THE ST. LOUIS County sheriff’s office said the plane crashed about seven miles east of the airport, in northeast Minnesota 175 miles north of Minneapolis. It said rescue personnel were on the scene, but further details were not immediately available.
KSTP-TV in the Twin Cities said the plane had eight people aboard. The station identified the plane as a twin-engine turboprop made by Raytheon.
Wellstone, 58, was first elected in 1990, and is running for re-election in a tight race against former Minneapolis Mayor Norm Coleman.
Earlier this year, Wellstone divulged that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He said he had been told by doctors he probably had had the disease for 15 years.
Wellstone and his wife, Sheila, have three childre, David, Marcia, and Mark.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

How very sad, my thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the senator, his wife, his child and the others who died in the plane crash.

Now this looks like a job for Detroit,
So everyone, just follow Steve,
'Cause we need another cup, can't you see,
'Cause it feels so empty without Stanley!
