Women in their 50's can have babies

CHICAGO (AP) --  There's no medical reason to prevent healthy women in their 50's from turning back their biological clocks and having babies with donated eggs, researchers say in the biggest study of motherhood after menopause.
The study looked at 77 women who participated in the University of Southern California's assisted-reproduction program between 1991 and last year.  It found that there were no infant or mother deaths and no serious health problems in the babies.
The older women were likely to have Caesarean births and faced high rates of pregnancy-induced diabetes and high blood pressure.  But those conditions are temporary, treatable and not reason enough to exclude them from trying to get pregnant, the researchers said.

As a woman in her 50's, I think this is ridiculous.    Personally, I would never, under any circumstances, want to have a baby at this age.  Not only do I not have the energy to keep up with an infant, toddler, pre-schooler, adolescent, etc., I don't have the patience to deal with a child, full time, any more.  Don't get me wrong, I love kids.  I can't wait for my grandchild to arrive in February, but it will be my grandchild, NOT MY CHILD.

I also feel this is unfair to the baby.  By the time a baby born to a 50 year old woman graduates from college, that mother will be 72 years old.   Evey baby deserves the chance to have their parents around to see them graduate from high school, get married, and support them when their own children are born.  I know there is no guarantee that this will happen, but the odds are much better if the parents are younger when the child is born.

What do the rest of you think about this?

ITA with you IL. I can't imagine why any woman would make that choice, and I agree that it isn't a good thing for the resulting child either. And why in the world would anyone spend money on a study like that??   Roll Eyes

ITA IL and LibertyBelle.  I am 35 and trying to have my first child (its been 6 years trying...sigh) and all I can say is that I am now wondering if I would still have the energy to raise a child. I feel like I am getting too old at 35!

Also, my mother had me when she was 40 and my father was 43.  I always had the "old" parents who never came to any school events, etc...

And then your kids have to start worrying about serious issues earlier in their lifetime, like can their parents continue to live at home alone, who will take care of their health needs, etc....

Its just not fair to the kids. I would say, for me personally, if I turn 39 and don't have any children, I am fully willing to stop trying.

Careful Kramer, my Mom was 22 when she had my oldest brother, and tried for 8 more years to have a second child.  She finally gave up and then had my brother at 31, and me at 34.  Giving up and deciding it's not gonna happen is often all it takes.  Wink

That is so true.  A good friend and his wife "gave up" and adopted a beautiful baby girl after years of trying.  Before the ink was dry on the adoption papers.........you guessed it, she was pregnant.  I think their son was born when their daughter was 13 months old.  The "kids" are now 28 and 29 years old.

Thanks for the advice guys, I have given up and still no luck.  Matter of fact, the low level fertility drugs don't even work on me.  I have an appt in December with U of M - Ann Arbor Infertility Clinic.  I will go see what my options are, if they aren't to scarey or unnatural then maybe I will have some luck.  If not, oh well, everything happens (or in this case, doesn't happen) for a reason (IMHO).

I would love to adopt, but Mr. Kramer isn't that open to the idea Sad

at 32, i still do not think that i have a biological clock and this gives me a little comfort that if perhaps something shocking happens and i desire to have children then i am not too late.  i have a friend like kramer, (though she is single now but would like to get married and have children), is over 30 and would like children.  this gives me hope for her and others like her.

i will be sending you fertile thoughts kramer!

After figuring it was hopeless Iwas successful by reducing my stress level and also taking low level fertility drugs.  Wednesday was born 10 weeks before my 40th birthday.

Also I did have a caesarean because of an enormous list of events, and a I did have pregnancy induced high blood pressure and I was hospitalized before kathleen's birth and I found out that preganancy at older ages is possible but your expectations should be different.  It was pretty hard at the end I had many disappointments that my body didn't act so perfectly as I presumed it was supposed to.  How silly of me.

I feel for you, I had that with both my pregnancies and it is no picnic! I had it worst and longest with the first, and let me tell you 2 months of "lay down all the time and only on your left side" is enough to drive any woman mad.
