'Garfield'-Loving Protesters Picket Letterman Alley Dedication Sun, Dec 8, 2002 11:46 AM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The dedication of an alley in Muncie, Ind., named for late-night host and native Hoosier David Letterman has stirred up a controversy. If you count two people dressed as comic-strip characters carrying picket signs as a controversy. The city of Muncie, where Letterman attended Ball State University, voted last month to name an alley downtown in Letterman's honor. Signs reading "Dave's Alley: Open 24 Hours" went up last week, the AP reports. The alley is adjacent to a comedy club. Muncie decided to name the alley after the host of CBS' "Late Show" after Letterman mounted half-joking campaigns to have Ball State's football stadium and a highway that circles Indianapolis named after him. At the dedication, two people dressed as characters from the comic strip "Garfield" showed up to protest the fact that the strip's creator, Jim Davis, doesn't have anything in town named after him. Davis has lived in the area for a number of years. The protesters, dressed as Garfield and his slobbering dog sidekick, Odie, held signs reading "Cats Rule, Dave Drools" and "Alleys Are for Cats." Muncie Mayor Dan Canan says the city is planning a parade honoring Garfield's 25th birthday next year.
