Lots of talk recently about the Smallpox vaccine, the possibility of an outbreak, and the risks of a population not being protected against it.

There is also a lot of real risks in TAKING the vaccine. It has been a proven fact that people will get sick (to certain degrees) from the vaccine. Some may die.

The U.S. Military will be getting the vaccine, President Bush has stated that he will get the vaccine. When asked, some Physicians have said they will get the vaccine and some say they will not.

I'm not really interested in a simple Poll but I am interested in what you think concerning the possibility of an outbreak of this deadly disease. There hasn't been a case of smallpox since 1972, and vaccination against this disease hasn't been routinely done since then. Boosters are needed after about 10 years so that means that almost everyone would need the vaccine.

Do you even think that an outbreak of this disease is possible again? Are you worried that this disease could be the next avenue of attack by terrorists?

What do you know about Smallpox? Would YOU get the vaccine?

I worry about my kids getting sick everytime I take them in for scheduled vaccinations. The nurse hands us reading material over whatever shots we have scheduled for that visit, and then explains that certain ones carry risks of infecting the child. It's a scary thought that by doing what is required for my child, that I could actually be harming them. So, back to the original question...I will not be vaccinating my family against smallpox until it's a required vaccine. There is a much higher risk of any of us contracting small pox than any of the other less serious diseases that we get "protected" against. If smallpox becomes an active disease again, I will certainly think about it a little harder, until then; I'm not taking chances that I don't have to.

I have had the vaccine before without complications. Therefore I would likely be vaccinated again. I don't know if I would give it to my child - need to think that one through long and hard and consider all the options.

The alternative, possibly contracting smallpox is really no alternative at all. That's almost a certain death sentence, and not a pleasant death at that.

So, what it boils down to is a crapshoot. Do you go ahead and get the vaccine when it is available or do you wait for a cell of sucidal terrorists to enter the U.S., split up to the four corners of the states and quietly spread a strain of smallpox throughout the population, THEN run to your Doctor and hope you get there before the folks down the street.

I would venture to say that at that point, mass hysteria would be the order of the day.

I'm sure you are right Bump. Also, I've heard a little more about it now, than I had heard when I first posted. I now know that if you get sick from the vaccine, it's not smallpox that you contract; but something else. I can't think of the illness just this minute. It's still serious, but not smallpox. Just the same, I'm not taking my kids in for it, until it's required. Guess I'll be part of the mass hysteria.

i dont think i ever had the smallpox vaccine but i had others when i was a kid, ive never caught any of the usual child hood illnesses like chicken pox or the mumps, i figured im just immune to it since when i was i kid my brothers caught it and it never came to me, im sure its not unusual but after my first series of shots i didnt get anymore afterwards.
