Nets May Drop Election Day Polling Service
Tue, Dec 31, 2002 01:57 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - After the TV debacle of the 2000 presidential election and more problems this year, several networks are thinking about dropping the polling service that feeds them election-night results.

If the networks -- ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC -- and the Associated Press do drop out, it would likely mean the end of Voter News Service, a partnership between the organizations that provides poll data used to call elections and break down how groups of people voted.

A number of newspapers also use the service, but the networks and the AP are its biggest clients.

A decision on the future of the service could come as early as next week, The New York Times reports. Should the service dissolve, networks will be left on their own to come up with new ways to collect the data or form a different partnership.

Voter News Service was created following the 1988 presidential election. The service allows the networks to save money by pooling resources on a system that would allow them to call races sooner than they had in the past.

The system broke down, however, on election night in 2000, in calling the extremely close race between George W. Bush and Al Gore in Florida. Several networks alternately called the state for Gore, seemingly giving him the presidency, then reversed course and said Bush had won Florida before ultimately acknowledging the state was too close to call.

A new computer system that was supposed to fix such glitches wasn't ready by this November's elections, further clouding the future of the service.

I really hate the election polls.  It seems that some dumb bunnies only vote for the candidate who's winning in the polls.  I wish we could actually have an election where no one ever said "so and so is ahead of so and so".  Everyone would have to vote for the person they wanted, and not the person they thought was winning.  Of course, no one will admit to only voting for the winning person, but we all know it happens.  Just like the wishy washy people who root for the winning sports team.  Just root for the one you like, and stick with them through thick and thin!  Win or Lose.  Sorry for the rant.
