Tonight: Kids For Sale
Jan. 8, 2003

(CBS) Tonight, January 8, 10 PM: "Kids For Sale"

Children trading sex for money or offering themselves to sexually suggestive websites are growing problems in the United States, but equally alarming are parents who embrace some of these troubling activities.

Correspondent Erin Moriarty investigates a disturbing internet trend where anyone can look at children for a fee. Teens and pre-teens as young as seven years old are posing provocatively in revealing clothes hoping to find fortune and fame. The websites aren't free to viewers, but charge for access. Renee has her own live web cam and website making $2,000 a month. She even has a wish list where she asks for and receives expensive gifts from anonymous admirers. Cindy is 11 years old and hoping to become a model. Her website has hundreds of paying customers. The girls' parents say they're not exploiting their children, but welcome the extra money. Experts worry that these websites are exploiting the girls and may even expose them to sexual predators.

Why would an all-American 14-year-old participate in a pornographic video? "Patti," a Palm Beach County, Fla. teen, tells correspondent Bill Lagattuta that she thought it was "normal," because "Playboy makes millions and they don't get into trouble." Now, she is going to trial, accused by the state of distributing pornography. Her parents are outraged, as they see their daughter as the victim.

The oldest profession, prostitution, is attracting some of the youngest recruits. According to a 2001 study at the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania, between 200,000 and 400,000 kids nationwide are at risk of being sexually exploited. The worst cases involve prostitution. One former teenage prostitute tells correspondent Peter Van Sant, "The younger you look, the more money you're gonna make." Surprisingly, more and more prostitutes aren't from dysfunctional families, but are still seduced by pimps who promise them love, security and money to turn tricks.

I have to admit as a parent whose life/career really revolves around the internet, I have some real concerns about the internet and the kind of exposure our kids get on the net.  It's almost impossible to keep daily spam with pornographic images and links and whatnot out completely.  I also remember Crops' post on SA about web cams and watching young teenaged girls take it off in the privacy of their bedrooms while their parents were probably oblivious in the next room.  Course this article suggest some parents are in on it for the $$.

This issue actually came up recently here because one of my husband's friends has a 16 year old daughter who's been getting onto the net while mom's not at home.  Mom came home and found one day that the daughter had stolen mom's credit card number to subscribe to several porno sites.  The worst part was none of them were like nomal sex image sites, it was all deviant sex, bondage, women with animals, etc..  Fortunatley she was able to confront the daughter and reverse the charges on her card.

I think the bigger issue here is that, are our children being exposed to so many sexual images and deviant sexual images that their own sense of sexuality and what is sexy being warped because of that?  Are we raising a generation of kids that think these things are normal and/or sexy in bed?  Because to me this is not normal sex and not what we should be looking for in a relationship.  I have to wonder if this is going to contribute to kids having more problematic or unstable relationships because they are looking for (what I would consider) abnormal things in the bedroom?  Maybe it's just me, but I don't think of the ideal husband as someone who puts his wife in a cage during foreplay.

What are your thoughts on this?

I think it's absolutely disgusting!  Someone sold my email address to a "lolita" type website.  I keep unsubscribing, but of course they have just sold it to the next person down the line.  Now, everyday we get about 3 or 4 of these nasty things.  My husband convinced me that if I just ignore them, they'll stop sending them.  I'm trying that, it's not working.  I would really hate for my 10 year old daughter to see an email of girls her age in very suggestive clothing and poses.  UGH!  Nasty, nasty stuff, that I find so very offensive.
Sorry Rhune, I got a little off of the subject here, but I had to rant.

No no, I fully agree.  I think it's very violating to have thise stuff forced on us in e-mail every day..you block one and a new one comes in.

A good thing to know is never click on unsubscribe, all that does is validate your address back to that site as valid so they can sell it to other lists.

Oh my goodness, am I a dummy!  I have never really explored Outlook Express, and didn't realize I had a "block" feature.  Last night, I started looking through all of my options and found it.  GeeZ.  On hotmail it's right there in your face, I guess I just thought it would be for Outlook Express too.  So, starting today, I'm actually gonna block that mess.  Whew!

I seem to have lost this feature when I upgraded to Outlook unfortunately, but in Outlook Express when you get a mail from someone you want to block it's really convenient to use.  You just open the mail you got, then you left click on the name of the sender up in the to and from info at the top of the message, so it's highlighted, then right click and a little menu will pop up with Block Sender right in it, so you can block them without even having to go into the submenus.  Smiley  Very handy.  With full Outlook, I have to go into the menus to block people so I end up doing it rarely, and just leaning on the delete key a lot.  I suspect when my keyboard goes, that key will go first.  Roll Eyes

i watched this program and was  :yikes: that the mother would allow her daughter to accept gifts from strangers on the internet...stranger who are able to find out where she lives.  accepting the computer was by far the worst thing too.  then allowing your daughter to send pictures of herself to these men ~ be they felish rather than explicit ~ was just degrading.girls/women need to be taught that they need not prostitute themselves out in order to do well in this world.  arrrggghhhhhhh!
