Celebs please SHUT UP!
« on: Mar 18th, 2003, 7:59am »

The recent slip of the tongue by The Dixie chicks brings to mind something I have always felt. Celebs should SHUT UP! not because they are right or wrong but because of who they are! These person carry a great deal of influence and some WACKO may take what they say out of context and do a BIZZARE act. I dont hear Pres. Bush judging The Chicks abilty to sing! Why should they judge his abilty to govern. If unhappy with the President then exercise your right to VOTE and change that! The Chicks Martin Sheen and othrs on both sides donot know all the details as we dont, its not thier job! I remind them they have a job and they should focus on that and let Mr. Bush do the job he was voted into Office to do. I again remond them and all of you President Bush knows nothing on Acting or singing and has not gone public stateing they donot know how to do their jobs! Do we have freedom of speech of course we do! But oerson who a great deal of influence should learn that freedom of speech is also freedom NOT to speak! As Americans we should all rally behind our President and our Troops we need not believe this WAR right on support them. I ask you this and all those who oppose this though. Where were your complaints during Afgan attack? If the was reason to complain it was then We ousted a Goverment that had nothing to do with 9/11 it only supported the hiding of Bin Laden was that right NO of cvourse not but they played not part in Attack that we know of only allowed Bin Laden to hide there. So what right did we have to overthrow The goverment? Did they mistreat thier people especially women yes they did. We all supported the removal of the Talli Bon (sorry about spelling) which had placed no direct threat to us. But now with a man who is a threat to all Americans we shy away? Im confused! But back to my point persons who are famous should do what they do best Entertain and let our elected Officails run our country if we dont like it we vote them out next election it is that simple! I want to tell a brief story that happened decades ago but proves my point. A reporter went to Paul Newman to ask him about a Polictical issue Mr. Newman looked back at the reporter and said "Why you asking me I'm just an Actor?" This is exactly my point and this is what all Celebs should be doing not because they are wrong but because of the influenece they carry and what some WACKO may think and do! In The Dixie Chicks case this may prove to be a BAD career move it seems many Country stations are now boycotting them! Weather you believe this WAR right or wrong our young men and women are there and they need our support. If we Attack them and our President then we play into Saddam's hand trying to destroy us from the inside using American againist American! We are Americans if you recall the words UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL. God Bless our men and women over there. God Bless all of us for we are all Americans and we are UNITED AMEN

I couldn't agree more David.  So many of the entertainers get away with touting their views because of their popularity and  much general public just stand there and get themselves sucked into  so much garbage. The entertaineers need to stick to their particular genre and the general public need to make themselves aware of facts by studying history and voting.

In just a few minutes on GMA, the jewels, etc., which will be worn by the celebs attending the upcoming Academy Awards, will be shown.  Now I ask everyone, how IMPORTANT is that?   Undecided  Oh gee - maybe I should tape that segment for posterity.   Sad

Our freedom of speech is not limited to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

No, I'm sorry.  I support our troops, and pray for their safety, but I do not support the President, or his misguided policy in this case.

Quote:

It's a different situation.  The Taliban government was receiving money from bin Laden and they were giving "aid and comfort" to Al Qaeda in return, and Al Qaeda planned and carried out the 9/11 attacks.

Quote:

Yes, they do.  When America goes to war in Iraq, I hope that the government does everything it needs to do to win the war with as few casualties as possible, and I hope it does what is necessary in the aftermath to rebuild Iraq, and support the American troops that fought there, though the evidence from the first Persian Gulf War and Afghanistan makes me doubt that will happen.  I can support our troops, and pray for their safety, without supporting Pesident Bush's misguided ideas about how to solve the problems in the Middle-East.

Well Eric although you tried to disagree with me it seems we agree in general I like your input. My comment on vote stands though I agree our freedom of speech isnt just on voting day but that is where you change what you dont like! The main statement I was trying make was regarding celebs intervention and the unfortunate power they weild over others (unintentional) and how they should repect that power. Also as stated Bush hasnt judged their abilties!

One other comment Eric I dont know if either of us has the right to state Mr. Bush has a "misguided" idea we donot know all the info in this matter the intelligence etc. Perhaps and I only say perhaps we would make same call if we had all the info Mr. Bush has. therfore I feel we have the right to agree or disagree with but not the right to say his choice was misguided. We dont have all the info all we have is what the bias left wing liberal media lets us know!

We could debate this issue until the cows come home, and I doubt that our positions would change, so this wiil be my last comment on the situation.  I have listened to the President's speeches about this, and I listened to Secretary of State Powell's full presentation to the UN Security Coucil on this issue, so if the Administration hasn't convinced me, it's not due to any supposed "liberal media" bias.  Is Saddam a threat?  Sure.  Is he trying to build/obtain nuclear weapons?  Yes.  Should he be stopped?  Yes.  Is it necessary to do so next week with military force?  No.  The "conservative media" and the President have been more than happy to point the finger at France for saying they'd veto the Resolution to authorize force, but the fact is that the United States, Great Britain and Spain could not even convince a majority of the UN Security Council that this war was necessary, and the government wouldn't have had to protect their Intelligence "sources and methods" in a closed-door council session, so it seems clear that the evidence to link Al Queda and Iraq is weak and circumstancial, at best.  Is Iraq more of a threat to world peace than Iran or Syria?  Both those countries support terrorism.  Is Iraq more of a threat to world peace than North Korea, which has several nuclear weapons, and the missiles to deliver them to Pearl Harbor, San Deigo, and/or Los Angeles?  I don't see how it could be.  We have Iraq over a barrel right now, and they are reluctantly cooperating with the weapons inspectors.  What harm would come from increasing the inspections and the pressure for a year, and then attacking next year with UN backing, if Saddam fails to comply completely?

Eric.

Actually though David - freedom of speech does give John Q Public the "right" to make a statement like that about President Bush.

In the meantime, we could argue and debate about any or all of this mess til the cows come home.  I personally don't think it does any good, except to let off some steam.  I believe however, that we citizens do NOT know everything and Bush and Powell - and the presidents before Bush - are not at liberty to divulge.  It's for the safety of our nation - loose lips sink ships.   Further, if we had in our possession one iota of what they knew - what could we do with it other than go insane?  Right now, the little I know and understand is driving me crazy with fear.

David, The main thing I agree with you on is that we must show our troops that we support them.  I doubt if a very large percent of those men and women want to be where they are, but they signed on to protect our country; this means they must go where they are sent.  The least that we can do is show them that we support them, and do not blame them for what they must do.
Luci sent me an email that was a copy of a letter written to Hollywood by Charlie Daniels.
it follows.....
...

An Open Letter To The Hollywood Bunch:

Ok let's just say for a moment you bunch of pampered, overpaid, unrealistic children had your way and the U.S.A. didn't go into Iraq. Let's say that you really get your way and we destroy all our nuclear weapons and stick daisies in our gun barrels and sit around with some white wine and cheese and pat ourselves on the back, so proud of what we've done for world peace.

Let's say that we cut the military budget to just enough to keep the National Guard on hand to help out with floods and fires. Let's say that we close down our military bases all over the world and bring the troops home, increase our foreign aid and drop all the trade sanctions against everybody.

I suppose that in your fantasy world this would create a utopian world where everybody would live in peace. After all, the great monster, the United States of America, the cause of all the world's trouble would have disbanded it's horrible military and certainly all the other countries of the world would follow suit. After all, they only arm themselves to defend their countries from the mean old U.S.A.

Why you bunch of pitiful, hypocritical, idiotic, spoiled mugwumps. Get your head out of the sand and smell the Trade Towers burning. Do you think that a trip to Iraq by Sean Penn did anything but encourage a wanton murderer to think that the people of the U.S.A. didn't have the nerve or the guts to fight him? Barbara Streisand's fanatical and hateful rankings about George Bush makes about as much sense as Michael Jackson hanging a baby over a railing.

You people need to get out of Hollywood once in a while and get out into the real world. You'd be surprised at the hostility you would find out here. Stop in at a truck stop and tell an overworked, long-distance truck driver that you don't think Saddam Hussein is doing anything wrong. Tell a farmer with a couple of sons in the military that you think the United States has no right to defend itself. Go down to Baxley, Georgia and hold an anti-war rally and see what the folks down there think about you.

You people are some of the most disgusting examples of a waste of protoplasm I've ever had the displeasure to hear about. Sean Penn, you're a traitor to the United States of America. You gave aid and comfort to the enemy. How many American lives will your little, "fact finding trip" to Iraq cost? You encouraged Saddam to think that we didn't have the stomach for war.

You people protect one of the most evil men on the face of this earth and won't lift a finger to save the life of an unborn baby. Freedom of choice you say? Well I'm going to exercise some freedom of choice of my own. If I see any of your names on a marquee, I'm going to boycott the movie. I will completely stop going to movies if I have to. In most cases it certainly wouldn't be much of a loss.

You scoff at our military who's boots you're not even worthy to shine. They go to battle and risk their lives so ingrates like you can live in luxury. The day of reckoning is coming when you will be faced with the undeniable truth that the war against Saddam Hussein is the war on terrorism. America is in imminent danger. You're either for her or against her. There is no middle ground. I think we all know where you stand. What do you think? God Bless America!

Cool Cool Thanks so much for posting that Chick.  You know I do good to turn this 'puter on, let alone post anything here!  If you want to read more written by this good AMERICAN, go to his site: www.charliedaniels.com, then click on soapbox.  He does tell it like it is!

Right or wrong, agree or disagree, we must support our President and most of all the American boys and men who are over ther in our behalf.
It makes me sick to think we will be in a war, but how else is this madman and his sons going to be stopped?

We will support our nation!  And will be truly saddened when we see husbands, Dads, Mothers, sons, brothers, sisters or any American lost in this effort!

Celebs are taken for more than they are too many times in our history.
Definition of an actor:  Reacting to what a director tells them to do!  That is and that's all!

Natalie Maines, you've embarrassed our whole country!  As my husband says, once the bullet is fired you can't take it back, you fired the bulllet!  No one will ever forget what you said!  Which goes to say; you can take a hick out of West Texas, but a hick is still a hick!  Too bad making a lot of money has not given you some much needed class!  It is time you Lips Sealed

It is long past time other countries that America has helped to support us, like Mexico for one!  We took away jobs away from the USA to give them more opportunity when the trade was put into operation years ago.  They don't appreciate it enough to support us now!  Maybe it is long  past time to close the border!

The problem is, you can be a good American, and support the troops, while believing that President Bush and his advisors have handled this situation badly, and are making a severe mistake by attacking Iraq without UN backing.  I have a 19-yr old cousin, who is in Kuwait right now, and if he makes it home again, I will thank God, and thank him for doing his duty, but that does not mean I support this war, or believe that it is the right thing for the United States of America to do.

Quote:
The Dixie Chicks said, "there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq." (AP)

I find their lack of imagination appalling.  There are many thing worse than war, and there are times when war is the only answer.  This is not one of those times, though.

Eric.

LOL  Forum Friends! Cool

As a friend said to me, when a man is taught to shoot at a target and then put the gun to his head, that is terrorism!

Yes, the thought of war makes us sick to our stomach and we are so thankful we aren't the ones being told to stock up on food and don't come out of the house until the shooting stops!

Friends, we enjoy our freedom!  What IF we were those people in Iraq who haven't done a thing to harm anyone?  Most are just families like us trying to live the best life possible for them and their families and it sure isn't much, is it?  Just think about that one!  If this sort of action isn't stopped now, the next war will be over here and we'll be very lucky if we don't see more acts of terrorism still to come on our soil.

This madman has to be stopped.  I for one want to see Saddam's  oldest son piled in a heap in the street, along with him!    Talk about EVIL!

One person we feel sorry for is Tony Blair, for he has been our greatest friend and ally.  He reminds us of Winston Churchill during WW2.  If you've not seen "A Gathering Storm" look for it on an HBO channel.  Albert Finney plays Churchill and also won a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal.
Churchill kept telling Parliament about the evils Hitler was doing, they did not believe him.  He was elected to Parliament again, then Prime Minister and led England through WW2.   This movie is worth 2 hours of your time.

I've toured the Holocaust Museum in D.C. and I've seen London and where ruins of one building stands next to another that hasn't been touched.  Do we want this for our country?  NO

We've already had a car run into barrracks, a ship and  the World Trade Center bombed, and the horrrid site of the Twin Towers that so many of us were witness to watching be hit by that airplane and then crumble.  And how many Americans died?   And for what, a madman who hates America!

The war started years ago, we've just given them too much time to keep stockpiling weapons.

We've been taught all of our life to turn the other cheek, well Lady Liberty's cheeks are burning red!

Right now all we can do is pray for our President,  that he can lead our country through this and our men be back home soon to their families.

Whatever your belief, it is time for PRAYER and lots of it from all of us!

This is long but OH SO telling.  Here's a "little" tidbit to add to the discussion:

Who's Smarter? by Cindy Osborne

The Hollywood group is at it again. Holding anti-war rallies, screaming  about the Bush Administration, running ads in major newspapers, defaming  the President and his Cabinet every chance they get, to anyone and everyone  who will listen. They publicly defile them and call them names like  "stupid" , "morons", and "idiots". Jessica Lange went so far as to tell a  crowd in Spain that she hates President Bush and is embarrassed to be an  American.

So, just how ignorant are these people who are running the country?  Let's look at the biographies of these "stupid", "ignorant" , "moronic"  leaders, and then at the celebrities who are castigating them:

President George W. Bush: Received a Bachelors Degree from Yale  University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102  pilot for the Texas Air National Guard. He began his career in the oil and  gas business in Midland in 1975 and worked in the energy industry until
1986. He was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the  vote. In a historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas Governor  to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998 winning
68.6 percent of the vote. In 1998 Governor Bush won 49 percent of the  Hispanic vote, 27 percent of the African-American vote, 27 percent of  Democrats and 65 percent of women. He won more Texas counties, 240 of 254,  than any modern Republican other than Richard Nixon in 1972 and is the  first Republican gubernatorial candidate to win the heavily Hispanic and  Democratic border counties of El Paso, Cameron and Hidalgo. (Someone began  circulating a false story about his I.Q. being lower than any other  President. If you believed it, you might want to go to URBANLEGENDS.COM and  see the truth.)

Vice President Dick Cheney: Earned a B.A. in 1965 and a M.A. in 1966,  both in political science. Two years later, he won an American Political  Science Association congressional fellowship. One of Vice President  Cheney's primary duties is to share with individuals, members of Congress  and foreign leaders, President Bush's vision to strengthen our >economy,  secure our homeland and win the War on Terrorism. In his official role as  President of the Senate, Vice President Cheney regularly goes to Capital  Hill to meet with Senators and members of the House of Representatives to  work on the Administration's legislative goals. In his travels as Vice  President, he has seen first hand the great demands the war on terrorism is  placing on the men and women of our military, and he is proud of the  tremendous job they are doing for the United States of America.

Secretary of State Colin Powell: Educated in the New York City public  schools, graduating from the City College of New York (CCNY), where he  earned a Bachelor's Degree in geology. He also participated in ROTC at CCNY  and received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon graduation in  June 1958. His further academic achievements include a Master of Business  Administration Degree from George Washington University. Secretary Powell  is the recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and  decorations. Secretary Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential  Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold  Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the  Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. Several schools and other  institutions have been named in his honor and he holds honorary degrees  from universities and colleges across the country. (Note: He retired as  Four Star General in the United States Army)

Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld: Attended Princeton University on  Scholarship (AB, 1954) and served in the U.S. Navy (1954-57) as a Naval  aviator; Congressional Assistant to Rep. Robert Griffin (R-MI), 1957-59;  U.S. Representative, Illinois, 1962-69; Assistant to the President,  Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, Director of the Cost of  Living Council, 1969-74; U.S. Ambassador to NATO, 1973-74; head of  Presidential Transition Team, 1974; Assistant to the President, Director of  White House Office of Operations, White House Chief of Staff, 1974-77;  Secretary of Defense, 1975-77.

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge: Raised in a working class  family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to  Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The  Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served  as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for  Valor. After returning to Pennsylvania, he earned his Law Degree and was in  private practice before becoming Assistant District Attorney in Erie  County. He was elected to Congress in 1982. He was the first enlisted  Vietnam combat veteran elected to the U.S. House, and was overwhelmingly  re-elected six times.

National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice: Earned her Bachelor's Degree  in Political Science, Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of  Denver in 1974; her Master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and  her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the  University of Denver in 1981. (Note: Rice enrolled at the University of  Denver at the age of 15, graduating at 19 with a Bachelor's Degree in  Political Science (Cum Laude). She earned a Master's Degree at the  University of Notre Dame and a Doctorate from the University of Denver's  Graduate School of International Studies. Both of her advanced degrees are  also in Political Science.) She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts  and Sciences and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from Morehouse  College in 1991, the University of Alabama in 1994, and the University of  Notre Dame in 1995. At Stanford, she has been a member of the Center for  International Security and Arms Control, a Senior Fellow of the Institute  for International Studies, and a Fellow (by courtesy) of the Hoover  Institution. Her books include Germany Unified and Europe Transformed
(1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era (1986) with Alexander Dallin,  and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army
(1984).

She also has written numerous articles on Soviet and East European  foreign and defense policy, and has addressed audiences in settings ranging  from the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Moscow to the Commonwealth Club to  the 1992 and 2000 Republican National Conventions. From 1989 through March
1991, the period of German reunification and the final days of the Soviet  Union, she served in the Bush Administration as Director, and then Senior  Director, of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security  Council, and a Special Assistant to the President for National Security  Affairs. In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on  Foreign Relations, she served as Special Assistant to the Director of the  Joint Chiefs of Staff. So who are these celebrities? What is their education? What is their  experience in affairs of State or in National Security? While I will defend  to the death their right to express their opinions, I think that if they  are going to call into question the intelligence of our leaders, we should  also have all the facts on their educations and background:

Barbra Streisand : Completed high school Career: Singing and acting

Larry Hagman: Attended Bard College for one year. Career: Acting

While comparing the education and experience of these two groups, we  should also remember that President Bush and his cabinet are briefed daily,  even hourly, on the War on Terror and threats to our security. They are  privy to information gathered around the world concerning the Middle East,  the threats to America, the intentions of terrorists and  terrorist-supporting governments. They are in constant communication with  the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, NATO, The United Nations, our own military, and  that of our allies around the world. We cannot simply believe that we have  full knowledge of the threats because we watch CNN!! We cannot believe that  we are in any way as informed as our leaders.

These celebrities have no intelligence-gathering agents, no fact-finding  groups, no insight into the minds of those who would destroy our country.  They only have a deep seated hatred for all things Republican. By nature,  and no one knows quite why, the Hollywood elitists detest Conservative  views and anything that supports or uplifts the United States of America.  The silence was deafening from the Left when Bill Clinton bombed a  pharmaceutical factory outside of Khartoum, or when he attacked the Bosnian  Serbs in 1995 and 1999. He bombed Serbia itself to get Slobodan Milosevic  out of Kosovo, and not a single peace rally was held. When our Rangers were  ambushed in Somalia and 18 young American lives were lost, not a peep was  heard from Hollywood. Yet now, after our nation has been attacked on its  own soil, after 3,000 Americans were killed, by freedom-hating terrorists,  while going about their routine lives, they want to hold rallies against  the war. Why the change? Because an honest, God-fearing Republican sits in  the White House.

Another irony is that in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was in office, the  Hollywood group aligned themselves with disarmament groups like SANE,  FREEZE and PEACE ACTION, urging our own government to disarm and freeze the  manufacturing of any further nuclear weapons, in order to promote world  peace. It is curious that now, even after we have heard all the evidence  that Saddam Hussein has chemical, biological and is very close to obtaining  nuclear weapons, their is no cry from this group for HIM to disarm. They  believe we should leave him alone in his quest for these weapons of mass  destruction, even though it is certain that these deadly weapons will  eventually be used against us in our own cities.

So why the hype out of Hollywood? Could these celebrities believe that  since they draw such astronomical salaries, they are entitled to also  determine the course of our Nation? That they can make viable decisions  concerning war and peace? Did Michael Moore have the backing of the Nation  when he recently thanked France, on our behalf, for being a "good enough  friend to tell us we were wrong"? I know for certain he was not speaking  for me. Does Sean Penn fancy himself a Diplomat, in going to Iraq when we  are just weeks away from war? Does he believe that his High School Diploma  gives him the knowledge (and the right) to go to a country that is  controlled by a maniacal dictator, and speak on behalf of the American  people? Or is it the fact that he pulls in more money per year than the  average American worker will see in a lifetime? Does his bank account give  him clout?

The ultimate irony is that many of these celebrities have made a  shambles of their own lives, with drug abuse, alcoholism, numerous  marriages and divorces, scrapes with the law, publicized temper tantrums,  etc. How dare they pretend to know what is best for an entire nation! What  is even more bizarre is how many people in this country will listen and  accept their views, simply because they liked them in a certain movie, or  have fond memories of an old television sitcom!

It is time for us, as citizens of the United States, to educate  ourselves about the world around us. If future generations are going to  enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers bequeathed us, if they are ever to  know peace in their own country and their world, to live without fear of  terrorism striking in their own cities, we must assure that this >nation  remains strong. We must make certain that those who would destroy us are  made aware of the severe consequences that will befall them.

Yes, it is a wonderful dream to sit down with dictators and terrorists  and join hands, singing Cumbaya and talking of world peace. But it is not  real. We did not stop Adolf Hitler from taking over the entire continent of  Europe by simply talking to him. We sent our best and brightest, with the  strength and determination that this Country is known for, and defeated the  Nazi regime. President John F. Kennedy did not stop the Soviet ships from  unloading their nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962 with mere words. He  stopped them with action, and threat of immediate war if the ships did not  turn around. We did not end the Cold War with conferences. It ended with  the strong belief of President Ronald Reagan... PEACE through STRENGTH

The good fortune to run into the ones that I do
And the eyesight to tell the difference."
