Comments on the war in Iraq

Eric, the poll thread may have drifted off into cyberspace, but I thought I would start a thread for further discussion on the subject.

I really didn't find any of your provided responses appropriate for me, but it did get me to thinking.

... How about the choice of attempting to make the United States a safer place for our children and grandchildren.

It is my belief that if something is not done to stop the terrorism, we will one day lose one of our major cities or ports to some radical terrrorist group who has been successful in getting some shipping container with a dirty bomb or small nuke inside. . . . . . . . "Mommy, can we go see the Statue of Liberty?", "no sweety, maybe in another 25 years the radiation level will be down enough for us to go".

Folks, there is a much larger picture to see. It's not about oil, it's about sending a message. I hate to see this conflict as much as anyone else but at the same time, we cannot continue endless debate, wringing our hands and hoping that things will change. There are just some times that you have to act. I realize that there are some that would not lift a finger if Sadamm, Osama or some other terrorist kicked in their back door. They would try to talk him out of the living room and convince him that wasn't a nice thing to do. But, the freedom we enjoy in this Country has a price and there are just some times that call for action. I would have MUCH rather we had the United Nations behind us 100%, but realistically if you look at it, the United States is only enforcing the sactions and agreements there were already in place in regards to Iraq. Iraq has never complied with the sanctions put in place after the first Gulf war. All we have seen is 10 -12 years of dragging their feet, and a big shell game.

I respect the rights of the protesters to protest our involvement in this war, but at the same time, they are enjoying freedoms and rights that are denied to the people of Iraq. Why is it no one has said anything about why the citizens of Iraq, (a nation with vast, rich resources), do not enjoy a higher standard of living while at the same time their leader has hunderds of "Palaces" and a personal fortune of about 80 billion dollars! Where is the outcry? IMHO, the protesters who disrupt, fight with Police, etc. do a dis-service and it takes away from the point they are trying to make. Our young men and women in the Armed Services have VOLUNTEERED to be over there, fighting and dying for all of us in this Country. They DESERVE to have our complete and very visible support.

I guess the horror of seeing people without hope jump to their deaths, of seeing innocent people die in an instant right before our eyes on TV as those towers fell, the overwhelming grief and sadness that we felt on 9/11 has faded from our memories. I would imagine that very few of those protesters were around in 1941 and remember Pearl Harbor. This is a changed world today. Today's attack on the fabric of this Country is not coming in a wave of fighter planes crossing our coastline. It's coming in methods just like 9/11 and we cannot sit idly by. I would imagine that on that plane flying over Pennsylvania, there were people that sat and did nothing, that's human nature. BUT there were also some VERY brave individuals who chose to act. THAT is the spirit, the dedication, that made this Country what it is, for hundreds and hundreds of years. There ARE some things worth fighting for.

Now we could debate this thing for days on end, but the government of this nation has committed our resources to this current situation. At this point, we should all rally behind our leaders and our Armed Forces. These are difficult times in a complex world. I would prefer that we not fight, but at the same time if the elected leaders of this Country, with the vast resources of intelligence information available, decide that this is the time and place to take a stand, then I support them.

I will pray that they will do what is best for this Country and I will pray for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces."

Replacing your post is greatly appreciate by this Poster, sir.

I'm not so sure history is being taught in schools in as much depth as when I was a child.  If that's true, our grandchildren may be doomed to make mistakes in the future that have brought to today and another war.

I think it behooves us as parents and grandparents to teach the little ones at our knee how it was - way back then in 2003.

Thanks Bump. I think the cry we're hearing from so many - "it's all about oil" - is extremely simplistic. It isn't that simple. It never is.

I read this a few days ago and it really made me think

Saddam Hussein has hailed the anti-war protests in the United States at the weekend as proof that Americans back Iraq rather than President George W Bush.

We do need to show support to our troops.

Absolutely, Jac-Kuch-ie....

While I am sure the vast majority of anti-war protestors do NOT mean to, I also believe that the mere fact that these demonstrators exist lends support to Saddam's possible belief that if he can hold out long enough and inflict enough casualties.. he can force a political soultion short of his removal.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the very nature of anti-war gatherings caused more people to be killed than otherwise?

While I fully support the right of these people to protest, call the president a terrorist or hold up signs encouraging the enlisted men to shoot the officers, I don't know that the protests are having the effect desired. I wonder if the demostrators have even thought of this... something tells me the answer is no.

Cool Thanks for putting your thoughts back in here  Bumper!  Sorry to be so long letting you know I appreciate and agree with you totally.

OK, what about the truck that rammed into the marine barracks?  Now how many years ago was that, and was it about oil?  .....or Flight #103 to New York, was that about oil?  .....and the World Trade Center, was that one about oil also?  .....or let's go one more, the ship that was bombed and men lost, was that one also about oil ?
AND WE WILL NEVER FORGET!!!  9-11-2001, now tell me that was about oil!  A very lame excuse for a bunch of murdering thugs to destroy hard working people who just want to keep having this good life in the land of the free, home of the brave,

I do not agree with the fact that we are at war at this time, but I don't publicly protest the war and I definitely support our troops.

My position - in a nutshell

If I had been asked before we were there, I would have voted no war (based on the information available to me).

On the other hand, I could not think of an alternative which would make S.H. cooperate either (based on the info available to me).  He's had twelve years.

Now that we're there, I don't support the idea of simply pulling the plug on it and leaving. We're committed now and must see it through to whatever end awaits.

Of course that's the simple version. I haven't really seen any reason to state all my opinions and reasons for my opinions as I don't think anyone is particularly interested in them - and just the process of thinking up a post to tell them is exhausting.  Grin

This Poster is more than "particularly" interested in hearing your views.  You and theBump brought me back to sanity a couple of weeks ago when I became confused about my own thinking.

I realize though, you're probably more than a little exhausted since you've returned to work.  You rest, love!

I don't think most of the protesters have give much thought to anything. They are rebels without a cause and will protest anything that they can.

The first time I read this, I thought S.H. meant shit head, then realized you meant Saddam Hussien, but then again, I guess they are interchangable. Grin
