Teacher punishes boy with 'you will die' message

SAGA -- An elementary school teacher is in hot water for instructing students to write "You will die" next to the name of a boy who wrote the same words to a girl on the blackboard, officials said Tuesday.

The 56-year-old teacher had intended to give the boy of the fifth-year class in Saga a warning.

Officials of the Saga Municipal Board of Education said that the teacher, whose name is being withheld, questioned a girl student after she burst into tears during a class on Feb. 26.

The girl told the teacher that a boy wrote, "You will die," under her name on the blackboard after classes finished the previous day.

The teacher then distributed papers to students of the class and told them to write the same words next to the boy's name, although some were reluctant to do it. He then showed several papers to the boy, saying, "What do you think about these? Don't do it again."

The parents of the boy lodged a complaint two days later, and the teacher talked with the boy to learn that he had written the disparaging words at the request of another student.

The teacher later apologized to the boy, his parents and all other students of his class, the officials said.

"The teacher didn't confirm details in the matter," a top educator of Saga said. "He also responded improperly without considering the students' feelings." (Mainichi Shimbun, March 25, 2003)

I know David - this teacer "wronged" every child in her class and their families - as well as other children in the school, who no doubtly heard about it.

Sure, some of the children probably let it go like so much water off a duck's back. Some of them will remember what that teacher made them do for the rest of their lives. We're supposed to be able to trust the teachers to act responsibly - emphasis on "supposed". Sad

I have five kids four are in school (Oldest is 12) this is a very scary story for me
