Ontario declares SARS medical Emergency

Ontario now has the second most cases of SARS in the world.  The vast majority of the cases are in Toronto.  This is what happens when you are the most multicultural city in the world.

The hospital where two SARS victims have died has now been quarantined as the staff are starting to show symptoms.

It means that every person who ever came into the hospital in the last 10 days is going to be quarantined in their home.

Am I afraid.  yes, I am.

My great-grandmother died from an flu epidemic leaving my grandmother without a mother at the age of 8 years old and killing my grandmother's younger sister.  She has recounted the story to me and the pain and sadness and responsibility she felt has never left me.  She helped run the household starting at the age of 8.  Bless her heart.

I know how illness can spread.  It can spread in schools and the subway.  It's really a great concern to me.  This plus the war - well it's very stressful.

How frightening this must be for you, addams, and for everyone who lives in Toronto.  This SARS thing is nothing to mess with, it seems to be spreading very quickly.  I agree, that we are all under way too much stress right now.  We just have to keep the faith that these things will all work out in the end.

Second hospital closes

S.A.R.S. has hit another G.T.A. hospital. Health officials met late Friday to reveal York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill has been isolated, after a patient transferred there from Scarborough Grace Hospital on March 16th was verified as having the disease. A second person also had a connection to that facility. And several health workers have been diagnosed with the ailment, as well.

That means the same protocols will now be put into place at York Central as those at the now virtually shuttered Scarborough Grace. All those who’ve been at the facility since March 16th are being asked to voluntarily quarantine themselves for ten days – which could affect potentially thousands more. “It’s like backing up and starting again with another hospital,” a gloomy Public Safety Commissioner Dr. James Young admits.

But the bad news doesn’t end there. Because staff members from the newly affected facility may have worked elsewhere, Ontario health experts have been forced to restrict access to three other places: North York General Hospital, South Lake Regional in Newmarket, and Markham-Stouffville in Markham.

Health Minister Tony Clement and Public Safety Minister Bob Runciman have scheduled an emergency summit for next week to deal with the unfolding – and unfortunately expanding – emergency.

I just heard on the news that the doctor who first identified this disease has now died from it.  This is more frightening by the hour.

thanks for the quick reply box - it's a big help to encourage posting.

Jackuchie - I have advised my parents not to visit this weekend and I am really disappointed.  we have not seen them in a long time but I am nervous about the whole business.  I don't want them to be taking Wednesday to public places.

Hopefully by May it will have run its course.

So far 70 doctors are under quarantine that means a real dint into what is already a doctor shortage problem''

That also meeans likely a couple hundred or more hospital staff in quarantine.

Wednesday still has a fever around 101 deg F and that's WITH tyelnol.  She has good energy levels and is eating again this morning. I am not letting her out of my sight.   no respiratory problems but I am being careful.

I am afraid to take her to the doctor though.  I will call the emergency hot line first before I do that.

It'sall adutls so far.  We are trying to be as careful as possible.

We bought some N95 masks yesterday "just because".  Husband wants to wear them on the subway.  I won't.

HK alert over killer bug cluster
Monday, March 31, 2003 Posted: 6:15 AM EST (1115 GMT)

HEALTH WARNING:
The World Health Organization alerts travelers to be aware of the symptoms, which include:
People presenting after February 1 with a history of fever greater than 38 C (100.4 F) and one or more respiratory symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and one or more of the following:
Close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with SARS. Close contact means having cared for, having lived with, or having had direct contact with respiratory secretions and body fluids of a person with SARS.
Recent history of travel to areas reporting cases of SARS.
Probable cases are defined as:
A person with chest x-ray findings of pneumonia or Respiratory Distress Syndrome or
A person with an unexplained respiratory illness resulting in death, with an autopsy examination demonstrating the pathology of Respiratory Distress Syndrome without an identifiable cause.

HONG KONG, China -- All residents of an apartment block in Hong Kong have been ordered to quarantine themselves at home for 10 days after a steep rise in cases of a deadly form of pneumonia.

The move comes as the mystery illness, known as SARS or severe acute respiratory syndrome, continues to spread across Asia and around the world.

The quarantine order came into effect as the Hong Kong government announced that 213 residents from the Amoy Gardens apartment complex in the district of Kowloon had fallen ill with the disease.

On Monday the government announced 80 new cases, and two deaths, bringing the number who have died in this territory of 6.9 million people to 15.

Of the 80, 64 new cases were recorded among residents in Amoy Gardens and 16 new cases from elsewhere, bringing the total number of infections recorded in Hong Kong to 610.

The high number of cases in one apartment block in particular has led some to fear that the virus could be airborne, rather than spread by droplets from sneezing or coughing as previously thought.

Residents of Block E have been told they will not be allowed to leave their building until midnight on April 9.

"Because of the very special circumstances that we now face, we have no choice but to resort to this exceptional measure," the Hong Kong government said in a statement.

In total, more than 1,600 cases have been reported worldwide and 59 people have died.

Airport screening
In an effort to combat the spread, airlines have been urged to screen passengers at check in, with several countries introducing airport health checks for passengers arriving from SARS hotspots.

Airlines have themselves reported large numbers of cancellations from worried travellers with share values in several Asian carriers plummeting as a result.

On Monday the Singapore government announced that nurses would be on stand-by to examine passengers arriving on flights from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Toronto, as well as Beijing, Shanxi, and Guangdong in China -- all of which have been listed as affected areas by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Some 91 cases have been reported in Singapore, three of whom have died of the disease.

However, a third of those infected have since recovered from the condition with doctors in Singapore and elsewhere reporting encouraging results from a cocktail of drugs if victims receive early treatment.

As in Hong Kong, Singapore has ordered all schools closed and imposed emergency quarantine orders on hundreds of people suspected of having close contact with confirmed SARS cases.

Singapore's health minister said Sunday the disease may spread more easily than first believed, with some people found to be more infectious than others.

Lim Hng Kiang said such individuals, who he dubbed "super infectors", could infect as many as 40 others.

"We run the risk of a huge new cluster of infected people, which could start a chain reaction," Lim told a news conference.

SARS spread to other countries from Hong Kong after an infected mainland Chinese medical professor passed the illness to seven other people in a Kowloon hotel last month.

They in turn carried the disease to Singapore, Vietnam and Canada.

Vietnamese health officials say the outbreak there appears to be under control with no new cases reported in the last week.

An official at the British Embassy in Hanoi told CNN that local government officials and medics from the United Nations health body, the World Health Organization, believe the disease has been largely confined to two hospitals in the city.

Hanoi was one of the first areas to be hit by SARS reporting 58 cases of infection -- mostly staff working at a city hospital who came into contact with a visiting businessman they were treating for the disease.

I no longer go to food courts and we are not taking the subway if we can at all avoid it.  With Wednesday not at school for a couple of days that helps minimize other contact as well.

I have stocked up on basic supplies to try to minimize going to the grocery store.  I am going to go at off hours and not at busy times - there's a 24 hour store nearby.

I was reading on CNN this morning that they believe this virus may be airborne.  Originally it was thought to be passed through spit and sneezes, etc. - wet stuff, but now they believe it may be airborne instead.
