She ran out of ammunition fighting the soldiers and killed several herself.  The reason they were attacked was because they made a wrong turn.

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rescued U.S. soldier Jessica Lynch shot several Iraqi soldiers prior to her capture, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, The Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing U.S. officials.

Special Coverage

The 19-year-old private first class continued firing at the Iraqis even after she sustained multiple gunshot wounds and watched several other soldiers in her unit die around her, one official told the newspaper.

"She was fighting to the death," the official was quoted as saying. "She did not want to be taken alive."

Lynch arrived in Germany early on Thursday for treatment at an American military hospital. She was held as a prisoner of war by Iraq (news - web sites) for more than a week until U.S. special forces freed her on Tuesday.

Lynch, who has two broken legs and one broken arm, was with a U.S. Army maintenance convoy ambushed by Iraqi forces on March 23 in the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya.

One official said Lynch was stabbed when Iraqi forces closed in on her position, the newspaper said.

U.S. defense officials said they were aware of the report, but could not immediately confirm the details of Lynch's capture.

Officials told the newspaper that the precise sequence of events was still being determined and further information would emerge as Lynch is debriefed.

The report said the information about Lynch's ordeal was based on battlefield intelligence that officials said came from monitored communications and from Iraqi sources whose reliability has yet to be assessed.

Lynch, from Palestine, West Virginia, arrived at the U.S. Ramstein air base in southwestern Germany early on Thursday aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport plane.

The special forces also recovered the bodies of two U.S. soldiers in the raid at the Saddam Hospital north of the Euphrates river which runs through Nassiriya.

Lynch was one of 15 soldiers listed missing, captured or killed when a 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company convoy made a wrong turn and came under attack from Iraqi tanks and fighters.

Five of the captives, but not Lynch, were shown on Iraqi television as well as the bloodied bodies of up to eight men, prompting President Bush (news - web sites) to warn that anybody mistreating U.S. prisoners would be punished as "war criminals.

Lynch was reported to be in stable condition Thursday at the U.S. military hospital in Germany on Thursday.

"Her condition is stable. She is undergoing medical assessment and treatment," a spokeswoman for the Landstuhl Medical Facility said, declining to give any further details.

Lynch's relatives had no plans to come to Germany, she added.

She arrived at the U.S. Ramstein air base in southwestern Germany shortly after midnight on Thursday aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport plane.

Lynch lay motionless on a stretcher as a medical team in army fatigues carried her off the ramp of the plane and lifted her into a waiting ambulance, Reuters television pictures showed. One member of the team held up a drip for her.

The ambulance took her to the nearby Landstuhl Medical Facility, America's largest hospital outside the United States.

God bless her and her family... and I am not a religous person.

Let's hope she comes home safe soon. She's sounds like a brave woman, and I saw somewhere that the Gov of WVA gave her a full ride to a state school.

I can't imagine how she was treated...

Here are 2 articles which detail the amazing way in which she was rescued.  The Iraqi who helped the rescuers is truly a hero.  If there are many more like him, a new Iraq should be in fine hands.

Family reaches base where ex-POW is recovering
Sunday, April 6, 2003 Posted: 3:29 AM EDT (0729 GMT)

LANDSTUHL, Germany (CNN) -- The parents of U.S. Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch landed in a private jet at Ramstein Air Base on Sunday morning to see their daughter, a former prisoner of war who is being treated for wounds she suffered in Iraq.

Greg and Dee Lynch were greeted by a delegation of U.S. officials and David Rubenstein, head of the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, at 7:10 a.m. [12:10 a.m. EST]. The parents and Lynch's two siblings, Greg Jr. and Brandi, were driven to their quarters on the base. They are expected to stay several days.

Lynch was rescued Wednesday in the southern Iraqi town of Nasiriya. The 19-year-old had been listed as missing in action until U.S. forces were alerted to her presence at a hospital there.

Lynch and seven other members of the 507th Maintenance Company, along with several other soldiers, were listed as missing after their convoy made a wrong turn near Nasiriya and drove into an ambush March 23.

Acting on information that government sources said was obtained by the CIA from more than one Iraqi source, U.S. Special Forces led a team of Marines, Army Rangers, Navy SEALs and Air Force pilots and controllers to rescue the Army private. (Full story)

Nine bodies were also recovered in the raid, and the Pentagon confirmed Saturday that they were all U.S. soldiers. (Full story)

Lynch suffered gunshot wounds, broken bones and a damaged disc in her back, doctors told her family. She was being monitored Friday for a fever, elevated heart rate and infection, but doctors said she improved quickly.

Rubenstein said he could not say whether Lynch's suffered her injuries during the ambush or while she was in Iraqi custody.

He said she was being debriefed by repatriation teams that would provide medical and psychological care as long as she needs it.

-- CNN correspondent Matthew Chance contributed to this report

Producers Buzz Around POW Story
Fri, Apr 4, 2003 02:46 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - A brave 19-year-old private is shot and stabbed in combat, taken captive by the enemy and rescued in the dead of night by a team of highly-trained commandos. The story Army supply clerk and Iraqi prisoner of war Jessica Lynch has adventure, violence, firepower and a happy ending, so it's no surprise that Hollywood producers have already begun calling about the possibility of turning Lynch's story into a television movie.

Michael Jaffe, producer of a number of quickie headline-grabbing telefilms, denies that he has contacted the Lynch family, but certainly understands why his colleagues would.

"I didn't say I'm not interested in the rights," Jaffe tells the Washington Post. "I'm just not chasing them.. It's very hard to look at that heartwarming story and not say, 'There might be a wonderful and rewarding movie in it.'"

Whenever a news story of this nature breaks, networks race to ready TV movies on the subject. Just days after Elizabeth Smart was returned to her family nine months after being kidnapped, ABC, CBS and NBC, along with cable's Lifetime and USA, were all taking pitches on possible projects. Thus, it's no surprise that the Lynch family in Palestine, West Virginia has already been receiving calls.

Some established producers suspect that the current wall-to-wall war coverage makes a Lynch telefilm less appealing because it tells a story similar to the one viewers are being bombarded with on all sides.

"I guess my feeling is right now the war is being covered so extensively in the news that I don't think at this point it is something we should be making movies about it. I think we're living the war," says Larry Sanitsky, who recently served as executive producer on "The Pennsylvania Miners' Story."

While the facts of the Lynch story continue to clarify (it's been reported that Lynch was never actually shot or stabbed), it still remains likely that the tale will eventually make it to the small screen.

One news report said that the special forces found shallow graves near the hospital. They didn't have any shovels, so they dug them up with their hands and recovered the bodies, all US soldiers. Has anyone else heard this part of the story? I only heard it once.

Yes, they found 9 bodies and have confirmed their identities, and apparenly they have found another body and haven't confirmed it's identity yet.

Now I thought we only had 12 pow's/mia's, but according to the list on cnn, these were all people reported mia and don't include the ones who were shown on television alive.  I seem to recall they found the bodies of 2 other of the mia's this last week as well...so I'm a little confused here.  Just how many of our sodiers are actually unaccounted for?

The Saga of ‘Saving Private Lynch’
Entertainment Tonight

She's not even out of the hospital yet, but the heroic rescue of 19-year-old Army Private First Class JESSICA LYNCH will be recounted on the A&E special, "Saving Private Lynch," airing this Friday. It’s been half a century since an American POW was rescued from behind enemy lines, so Private Lynch's story is truly extraordinary. The show explores the entire story, starting with the mission her unit was undertaking to her terrifying capture in a firefight, which killed at least nine of her comrades and left five prisoners, and, finally, her amazing rescue. It also pays due to the bravery of the man known as MOHAMMED, an Iraqi who risked his own life to help save Jessica. In the special, homage is also paid to PFC LORI PIESTEWA, Jessica's roommate and the first female soldier to be killed in Iraq.

Iraqi doctors say they took risks to care for Lynch
Hospital staff gave her food, medicine, news, they say
From John Vause
CNN
Sunday, April 20, 2003 Posted: 7:32 AM EDT (1132 GMT)

NASIRIYA, Iraq (CNN) -- Doctors and nurses at Nasiriya's main hospital say they defied senior Iraqi military leaders and Baath Party officials to care for a wounded American soldier who was held prisoner there for more than a week.

Ahmed Muhsin, a resident doctor at the hospital, said he and other medical workers smuggled food and news of advancing coalition forces to Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch, who was under constant guard while being treated for two broken legs, a broken arm and a fractured back.

There was no immediate way to independently confirm the doctors' claims.

Saad Abd Alrazaq, a hospital administrator, said Lynch was in shock when she arrived at the hospital. He said that she was given plasma and two transfusions, and that he gave her clothes from his wife's closet because she was covered by little more than a sheet.

"She had no family in Iraq, and we felt we were her family," Alrazaq said. "We would visit her often, sometimes with my children."

Lynch and a number of other soldiers from the 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, along with several from other units, were listed as missing in action after Iraqi forces ambushed their convoy March 23 near Nasiriya. The 19-year-old native of Palestine, West Virginia, a supply clerk with the 507th, was rescued April 1 in a commando raid on the hospital.

Lynch's rescuers also discovered the bodies of nine other missing soldiers.

Muhsin said Lynch's guards beat her and tried to stop doctors from checking on her more than twice a day, but that he and others on the staff would give her biscuits, oranges, milk and medicine from their own limited supplies.

"She suffered from [the soldiers]," he said. "Largely she suffered from them."

The hospital staff said they thought it was their duty as Muslims to give Lynch the best possible treatment. Islam, they said, teaches that prisoners of war should be treated well.

The staff also appeared to have been taking a quiet stand against Saddam Hussein's regime.

"Always I spoke with her and told her that [the] American military is close to Nasiriya and will arrive soon," Alrazaq said.

Eight days after Lynch was brought to the hospital, that prediction came true.
