Now is it just me, or is the one on the top row, second from left, wearing a jock strap on his face?

I just find it ironic that something as horrible as this is still quickly turned into a way to make money.  On the other hand, if you have to wear a mask, why not have a little fun with it, I guess.

I don't find this thread very humourous.  I travel with an N95 mask in my bag for myself and one for my daughter.  If we are on a public bus and have to be face to face with someone the mask will go on or if someone is ill.

living in a city filled with quarantines etc. I can vouch that I would prefer to have a mask that is more friendly.

These masks however may only be for fashion and not safety.  That is what really concerns me.

For those of us living this nightmare  I find messages like "stop this madness" are completely unsupportive and uninformed.  What we are going through right now in worry is something that I think others absolutely have no clue.

I definitely wasn't poking fun at SARS & the situation, but more taking a swipe at commercialism and how quickly some people will turn a bad situation into a means for them to make a buck.  On the one hand I find designer fashion face masks appalling, and on the other hand I see people trying to make the best out of the situation and add a little lightness to it by having colorful masks.  I hadn't thought of the aspect of people using masks that were unsafe as a result, but I would certainly question whether wearing a jock strap on your face is safe or not.

I can't speak for Tinkerbell, but I didn't think she was making a joke when she said "stop the madness".  I thought she was being sincere.

That's the problem with written text - sarcasm doesn't carry across very well.  My smile at this article was not a levity kind of smile, but an ironic and wry kind of smile, mingled with disgust for people who are taking advantage of this situation to put out designer masks (especially if they are unsafe).  It's the same way I feel about the hundreds of support your troops by wearing our t-shirt! ads I get daily in e-mail.  I don't believe for one instant that buying that t-shirt supports my troops, I believe it supports that person's personal pocket book and that they are taking advantage of a dark situation to turn a profit.  Now, I am an american and I understand that what the troops are fighting for ties in to the same capitalism that allows these guys to put out t-shirts in the first place, but at the same time I feel the way that's being taken advantage of by these guys is just disgusting, and I see the same thing with these designer masks.  That's what I was trying to get across with this article.

I noticed something yesterday about those masks and wish I had posted then.  If you look more closely at those alledged "designer" masks - do you see the real mask underneath - the white ties are distinguisable.  Now I don't think they're designer ones at all.  I think some of these people might have simply dressed them up a bit.

And I feel Tinks statement was just what she meant about all of it - "stop the madness".  We've got this horrendous disease and a horrendous war going on.  I feel the "madness" all around me........

thanks guys - but the sad truth is that many of us may be wearing those masks.  It's not what anyone wants to do.  It's a stigma and if the mask is colourful I think it reduces the stigma all round.

I may have missed the humour. Sorry. I am sure there was no intention to make light of a serious situations.

Definitely none of the humor in this was directed at people having to wear masks, in my case it was mostly unhappiness (but could have across as humor) in my posts. The only exception & humor to that was over the guy wearing a jock strap on his face, because I think that's pretty rediculous for him to be doing - in any case.

I know every one of us worries about you guys up there and are glad you have masks in your purse for just in case.

I honestly don't know, it really looks like one to me...and I have read there are major mask shortages in some areas, so I find it plausible that he might put one on.  Do they make masks that look like that?  I suppose they could.

I think it's funny if they do.  I don't know if I have ever seen a jock strap (blush)
