Arnett, Rivera Spark MSNBC-FNC Cat Fight
Thu, Apr 3, 2003 06:38 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - In times of war and great international anxiety, it's relieving to know that the news is being provided by sources that retain their sense of humor.

On Monday (March 31), NBC dismissed reporter Peter Arnett after he questioned American military on Iraqi state television.

On Tuesday (April 1), under heavy pressure from the Pentagon, Fox News Channel reporter Geraldo Rivera "voluntarily" left Iraq for Kuwait on the cloud of allegations that he was telecasting confidential information.

Before the dust on these media debacles could settle, both networks sought to use the other's failure as a selling point.

MSNBC began the mini-skirmish with a promo promising that their embedded reporters would never compromise military security or the lives of American soldiers. Rivera isn't mentioned by name, but it doesn't take a BBC viewer to get the gist of it.

Fox News fired back on Wednesday with a typically bombastic spot.

"He spoke out against America's armed forces," says FOX's promo. "He said America's war against terrorism had failed. He even vilified America's leadership -- and he worked for MSNBC. Ask yourself, is this 'America's News Channel?' Real journalism: fair and balanced. We report; you decide."

"It's interesting that Fox News Channel now finds us relevant since several weeks ago, we were deemed irrelevant," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I find it outrageous they would run this promo and continue to employ Geraldo Rivera."

In other news, Arnett has already landed on his feet, writing a weekly column for Britain's anti-war tabloid The Daily Mirror and providing television coverage from Baghdad for private Belgian TV network, VTM.

Did anyone actually see what Geraldo did? I didn't get a chance to see it, and read an article yesterday that said he really did no more then the guys with the maps back at the studio (and a lot less accurately). And no, it wasn't from Fox Wink

If he actually did something to give away info, by all means get rid of him. This article made it seem like MSNBC was trying to get him booted after the Arnett thing, and the Pentagon wanted him out of country till they settled it.

Personally, I don't like Geraldo anyway... I am fine with him not there.
