You Have To Read This To Believe It

THURSTON COUNTY - This might be the most complex news story we've had to write all year as four different incidents -- all ultimately related -- conspired Saturday night to send four to the hospital with serious injuries.

The first incident occurred at 10:51 p.m. Saturday night when 45-year-old Frank Broach called 911 from his cell phone to say that he had fallen from the Nisqually River Bridge on I-5.

He said he was driving his white Oldsmobile northbound on I-5 just north of the Nisqually River Bridge when his car ran out of gas. He then got out of his car and started walking southbound along I-5 toward a previous exit to get gas from a nearby Chevron Station.

As he approached the north end of the bridge, he went where he mistakenly thought was a pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of the bridge. But there was nothing there, and he stepped off the bridge and fell into the darkness.

The State Patrol and firefighters from Station 31 arrived on the scene, blocked the right lane of northbound I-5, and began their rescue of Broach, who was about 20 feet below on the rocky embankment below the northeast side of the bridge.

But, as the rescue was under way, a 53-year-old Lakewood man approached the scene in a maroon Plymouth Sundance and failed to see the emergency cars -- with siren lights flashing -- blocking the right lane. He smashed into the rear end of the Station 31 emergency command response vehicle. The driver was taken to St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia with critical internal injuries. A firefighter also sustained minor injuries in the crash and was also taken to St. Peter's.

Investigators suspect alcohol and/or drugs were factors in this collision, and police are seeking charges against the driver -- including driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

But, during the response to that crash, a second two-car collision occurred in the southbound lanes of the bridge, blocking all southbound lanes. There were no details on the what caused the crash or the condition of those drivers.

In the meantime, as southbound traffic came to a halt, a 16-year-old Spanaway boy got out of a van and approached the original scene to watch the rescue of Broach. However, he disregarded the metal bars that prevent pedestrian traffic along the east side of the bridge. He, apparently like Broach, stepped where there was no sidewalk, and fell about 20 feet below into the darkness. He also landed on the rocky embankment and suffered a broken arm. He was taken to Capital Medical Center in Olympia.

Meanwhile, crews were finally able to rescue Broach. He was originally taken to St. Peter's but then had to be airlifted to Harborview with critical injuries.
