Group Brings Al-Jazeera to United States
Tue, Apr 8, 2003 05:47 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - A nonprofit group that transmits foreign-language TV programs in the United States has reached a deal with the al-Jazeera network to bring the channel to this country.

Unedited newscasts from the Arabic-language news network began airing April 1 on cable systems in several U.S. cities, including Cleveland, St. Louis and Milwaukee. The broadcasts, which air at 6:30 p.m. ET Tuesdays and Thursdays, are being brought to the States by SCOLA, a nonprofit organization that transmits foreign-language programming to colleges, cable systems, independent TV stations and individual subscribers.

The group says it started carrying al-Jazeera as a response to "requests from educators for news content in Arabic." SCOLA also says that it merely provides a conduit for people interested in seeing news and other programming from abroad and "does not direct, influence, or endorse the content decisions made by al-Jazeera or any other broadcaster."

Al-Jazeera is one of the few TV outlets in the Arab world that is not state-controlled. It's won praise from many viewers for its independent voice, although it also has its share of critics.

Recently, those critics have included the Bush administration and the British government, who took the network to task for showing images of allied casualties and prisoners of war in Iraq. Al-Jazeera maintains it just reports what it sees.

Al Jazeera (or one of its reporters) announced that it could no longer be objective after we "intentionally targeted" them a few days ago. I will look for the article.

Dead Al Jazeera correspondent deliberately targeted

Colleagues of the Al-Jazeera correspondent killed on Tuesday when two US missiles struck the Baghdad offices of the Qatar-based channel have said they believe they were deliberately targeted.

" I will not be objective about this because we have been dragged into this conflict," said Tayseer Alouni. "We were targeted because the Americans don't want the world to see the crimes they are committing against the Iraqi people."

just to give you a taste of what they consider "reporting"

I think we should start a group to bring FoxNews to the Mideast.

Will we be needing the posse to get FoxNews there?  I've got one just in case....
