Marines find missile in soccer stadium Thursday, April 10, 2003 Posted: 6:12 AM EDT (1012 GMT) AMARAH, Iraq (CNN) -- Citizens of in the town of Amarah, southeast of Baghdad, led U.S. Marines to a soccer stadium Thursday where the Iraqi regime had hidden an al-Samoud missile, CNN's Bob Franken reported. It was not clear whether the missile violated the range of 150 kilometers (93 miles) set under U.N. sanctions. Marines from Task Force Tarawa have control of Amarah, a town of about 330,000 predominantly Shia Iraqis, reported Franken, who is embedded with the Marines. The Marines had expected to battle fierce resistance from the Iraqi army, but they found only jubilant residents when they arrived in Amarah. Amarah is northeast of Nasiriya, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the Iranian border. The Marines captured the headquarters of Iraq's 10th Armored Division near the Iranian border Tuesday, along with an airfield and an ammunition supply point, without firing a shot, U.S. Central Command announced. After some consultations, the townspeople led the Marines to the soccer stadium where the missile was hidden. During the last round of U.N. inspections -- which ended when the war began March 19 -- Iraq destroyed more than 70 al-Samoud 2 missiles the United Nations said exceeded the 150-kilometer range. Iraq denied the missiles violated that range.
