Chirac 'rejoices' as Saddam falls
Thursday, April 10, 2003 Posted: 8:43 AM EDT (1243 GMT)

LONDON, England (CNN) -- French President Jacques Chirac says his country is "rejoicing" in the apparent collapse of the Iraqi dictatorship.

Chirac strongly opposed a U.S-led military attack on Iraq, preferring to work through the U.N. Security Council in supporting longer weapons inspections.

But he said in a statement released by the Elysee Palace Thursday: "France, like every democracy, is rejoicing over the collapse of Saddam Hussein's dictatorship, and hopes for a quick and effective end to the battle."

His foreign minister, Dominique de Villepin, added: "With the collapse of Saddam Hussein's regime, a dark page has been turned."

The French daily newspaper La Liberation focused on the causes of the war, saying: "The successful military campaign in Iraq can only reassure the powerful U.S. that its vision of the world must be the right one.

"But its pretext for invading Iraq is... being proved wrong. For where are the weapons of mass destruction?"

Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair, who committed his country's troops to war, was quoted as being "delighted" at pictures showing the toppling of President Saddam Hussein's symbols of power.

"People have seen today the scales of fear falling from the people of Iraq," a Downing Street spokesman added.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who opposed the war, was reported as saying he welcomed the sights from Baghdad as it was a sign that the conflict would be over soon.

CNN's Stephanie Halasz in Berlin said: "The overwhelming feeling among Germans was one of skepticism.

"How is the future of Iraq going to square up? Are the Iraqis capable of forming a democracy? And there is concern about those Iraqis who have died or who are injured."

Russian newspapers talked about Baghdad having been "taken and plundered," while there was disbelief that the Iraqi troops and regime could have dissolved so quickly.

Chirac, Schroeder and Russia's President Vladimir Putin are to meet this weekend to discuss a post-war Iraq, with the likely emphasis on pushing for an increased U.N. role.

Italy's La Repubblica criticized the anti-war grouping, saying in an editorial: "The battle lines are drawn and this time the countries that opposed the coalition war are ready to muscle in and demand a piece of the Iraqi pie."

AngryChirac has some nerve now jumping on the band wagon! He and his Goverment stalled things in UN he fought us all the way. Perhaps if he and Germany etc had followed ours and the Brits lead Saddam may have realized he had NO SUPPORT and would have surrendered without loss of life! Chirac for you to state how pleased you are I find as an insult!  Tell someone who wants to hear what your hypocritic mouth has to say its NOT me! The loss of life on both sides is partially on your hands a united UN may have prevented the loss of life both sides experienced and Saddam would be in Exile now. I am disgusted by your comments and find your support for what HAD to be done wishy washy! Save your comments for someone who shives a git! Its NOT me!

Shaking my head in disgust at those nations who didn't back the US in this coalition.  We need no pats on the back from them.

" Chirac, Schroeder and Russia's President Vladimir Putin are to meet this weekend to discuss a post-war Iraq, with the likely emphasis on pushing for an increased U.N. role."

And the above heads can meet 'til the cows come home.  pfffffffffffft

I have to agree, I find this pretty disgusting that they lambasted us for declaring war, then got caught secretly breaking the embargo and trading with Iraq, and now they are waiting in the wings, rubbing their hands together waiting to pick over the "spoils".  Blah.  I am a big critic of how Bush has handled giving out rebuilding contracts, but I don't have a problem with the contracts staying within the countries that did the work - the US and England, etc..  My complaint has never been that other countries aren't getting a shot at the contracts, just that free market within our own country wasn't allowed to take place as it should have. I just don't have any respect for the French President chiming in suddenly like this and heaping praise - it's just empty words.

I think this joke says it perfect

Five surgeons are discussing who makes the best patients to operate on.
>
>The first surgeon says, "I like to see accountants on my operating table,
>because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered."
>
>The second responds, "Yeah, but you should try electricians. Everything
>inside them is color-coded."
>
>The third surgeon says, "No, I really think librarians are the best;
>everything inside them is in alphabetical order."
>
>The fourth surgeon chimes in, "You know, I like construction workers. They
>always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end and when
>the job takes longer than you said it would."
>
>But the fifth surgeon, Dr. Morris Fishbein, shuts them all up when he
>observes, "The French are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no
>heart, no
>balls and no spine. Plus the head and ass are Interchangeable."

Chirac: U.N. should play important role in Iraq
Wednesday, April 16, 2003 Posted: 4:57 PM EDT (2057 GMT)

ATHENS, Greece (CNN) -- The United Nations should play an important role in rebuilding postwar Iraq, France's President Jacques Chirac said Wednesday.

Speaking at a news conference during the European Union council meeting in Athens, Greece, Chirac, a strong opponent of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, said a central role is required because the U.N. is the "sole body" with the "competence and the legitimacy" to handle Iraq's reconstruction.

"What I'm saying is, you have to look at the problems, file by file, case by case, and solve them," Chirac said. "Find a right way to solve them. But we can't do that without the United Nations. It won't work."

Chirac said France is pushing for the United States and Britain to ensure that humanitarian aid is distributed in Iraq, that water and electricity systems are reinstated, and that civil order is restored.

On Monday, Chirac met with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the two agreed on the need for rapid Iraqi humanitarian aid. Chirac urged a swift E.U.-funded airlift of seriously injured Iraqi children to hospitals in Europe.

Along with France, Security Council members Britain, Spain and Germany are working on a joint statement on the U.N.'s postwar Iraq role, and were meeting U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who is also in Athens.
