Pennsylvania girl abducted; parents killed
Amber Alert issued for teen
Sunday, April 20, 2003 Posted: 10:27 AM EDT (1427 GMT)

POCONO LAKE, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Police in Pennsylvania searched Sunday for a 13-year-old girl and the man they say abducted her and killed her parents.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police said Hadley Bilger was taken Saturday night from her home in Pocono Lake, about 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania.

Police said Robert Lee Hixson, 42, shot and killed Hadley's 40-year-old father and 37-year-old mother and then fled with the teenager, possibly in a red 1993 Chevrolet S-10 pickup with a black cap and Pennsylvania tag number YHP6034.

Hadley's 5-year-old sister was also in the house, but she was not hurt and was able to run to a family member's house for help, authorities said.

Police said Hadley's father was alive when authorities arrived and was able to identify Hixson -- his brother-in-law -- before he died. Detective Harry Lewis said Hixson was married to the sister of Hadley's father.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for Hadley, who is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. She is described as having shoulder-length, straight brown hair and blue eyes.

The suspect, Hixson, is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds. He is described as having brown hair and eyes and a beard and mustache.

The names of the parents were not immediately released.

Well I sent them an e-mail asking why the heck they hadn't updated yet and got a reply back that they don't update until someone tells them about the Amber Alert, and they have updated now.

Good news...

FBI: 13-Year-Old Girl Released After Abduction

Sunday, April 20, 2003

POCONO LAKE, Pa. — A 13-year-old girl who was abducted after a man broke into her family's home and killed her parents was released unharmed after a police chase Sunday morning, authorities said.

The FBI was trying to negotiate the surrender of suspect Robert Lee Hixson, 42, believed to be the girl's uncle, FBI spokeswoman Linda Vizi said. He was still in his vehicle, surrounded by officers near Reading, Sunday morning.

"At some point, Hixson stopped the car and let her out. She is with the police," Vizi said.

Hixson allegedly shot and killed his wife's brother, Myron Bilger, and Bilger's wife, Ellen, after breaking into the family's Pocono Lake home at about 9:20 p.m. Saturday, according to police and the FBI.

The couple's 5-year-old daughter was also home at the time and ran to the house of a relative, who alerted authorities, police said. A statewide Amber Alert was issued for her older sister, Hadley.

The girls' father identified Hixson as the shooter before he died, said Pocono Mountain Regional Police Detective Harry Lewis.

Police declined to comment on a possible motive, but said they did not think an argument immediately preceded the shooting.

"There was no communication, from what I understand. He broke in," said Detective Michael Robson. He said Hixson was believed to still have the shotgun allegedly used in the slayings with him.

Pocono Lake is about 80 miles north of Philadelphia.

Thank goodness she is out of his hands though.  Her life is going to be a mess and she will need serious therapy, but it could have been a lot worse. :wail:

Kidnapped girl freed, murder suspect surrenders
Monday, April 21, 2003 Posted: 1:03 AM EDT (0503 GMT)

BETHEL, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- A man who police said abducted his teenage niece after killing her parents was taken into custody Sunday afternoon without a fight, the FBI said Sunday.

Robert Lee Hixson, 42, was arraigned Sunday night by a magistrate in Pocono Summit on two counts of criminal homicide, which could leave him eligible for the death penalty, said Pocono Mountain Detective Harry Lewis.

Hixson surrendered around 3:40 p.m., ending a four-hour standoff in a rural parking lot on Route 419, about a mile off Interstate 78 in Bethel Township, near Reading.

"Mr. Hixson has surrendered to the Pennsylvania State Police and other local authorities that were negotiating with him," FBI Special Agent Linda Vizi told CNN. "This was a peaceful resolution, exactly what we wanted to happen."

Hixson, 42, an unemployed former Navy SEAL from Danville, will face charges of double homicide in the deaths of his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, she said.

The incident began around 9 p.m. Saturday, when Hixson broke into his brother-in-law's house in Pocono Lake, 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Vizi said.

Using a shotgun, he shot his wife's brother, Myron Bilger, 40, and Bilger's wife, Ellen, 37, and then fled with their daughter, 13-year-old Hadley, police said.

But the suspect did not harm the girl's 5-year-old sister, who went to a relative's nearby house and told her what had happened, Vizi said.

The relative then called police, who arrived at the house and found the mother dead.

The father identified Hixson as the shooter and was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, where he was pronounced dead on arrival of a gunshot wound to the abdomen, said Pocono Mountain Detective Harry Lewis.

Armed with the identity of the suspect, police issued an Amber Alert that identified Hixson's red 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck.

At 10:45 a.m. Sunday, state troopers spotted Hixson's pickup headed south on Route 61 and attempted to stop him, but he sped off -- still carrying Hadley, Vizi said.

After a chase, the pickup drove over "stop sticks" and came to a halt around 11:30 a.m. in a parking lot outside a catering company, she said.

"At that point, the girl was let go," she said.

But Hixson, armed with a shotgun, held police at bay, first from inside the truck, and later standing outside the truck in the parking lot, where SWAT team members had joined more than a dozen state police.

Journalist Tom Kelly, crouched behind a building less than 500 feet from the suspect, overheard the negotiations.

Using a bullhorn, police asked, "Why do you want to die? Your wife doesn't want you to die. Your daughter doesn't want you to die. Why would you want to die?" Kelly told CNN.

Detective Lewis said Hixson would be arraigned Sunday night by a magistrate in Pocono Summit on two counts of criminal homicide, which could leave him eligible for the death penalty.

Sunday night, he and the girl were both at the police station -- he in a cell and she in a room with family members, Lewis said.

Lewis said police were trying to trace the whereabouts of the two during the time she was abducted and trying to figure out the suspect's motive.

A spokeswoman for the Pocono Mountain Regional Police said they would have a news conference to update the media at 10 a.m. Monday.
