Hazing & Lawsuits in Chicago

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- A Cook County Circuit Court judge Wednesday turned down a Glenbrook North High School senior's request to block her 10-day suspension for involvement in an off-campus hazing incident captured on videotape.

Marnie Holz, 18, had sought a temporary restraining order in the case, but Cook County Circuit Court Judge Julia Nowicki rejected the request. Two other suspended students also have filed suit.

Holz claimed the suspension would damage her academic standing, bar her from attending Saturday's prom, and possibly prevent her from graduating with her class.

The judge, however, said that under the terms of the suspension Holz would be allowed to take tests and exams, just not at the school. If she passes those she would be able to graduate.

Twenty-eight girls and four boys were suspended as a result of the May 4 incident in which five junior girls were injured.

Witnesses said the game between the students never got under way. Instead, what began as light hazing quickly escalated to violence.

Two of the injured said last week that they had no idea the seniors would go back on their promise of not physically harming them during their initiation into the senior class.

A videotape shot at the scene shows several students huddled together on the ground while others hit them, kick them and threw objects at them, including large plastic buckets and baseball bats. Witnesses also reported urine, feces and fish entrails being thrown, and other victims said they had been forced to eat mud.

Glenbrook North High School is in Northbrook, a suburb north of Chicago.

I have read a much lengthier article on this that I didn't post, because it's so graphic.  What went on here disgusts me.  If she didn't want her record harmed and her potential to get into nice colleges ruined, then perhaps she shouldn't have thrown feces on girls and hit them with baseball bats.  One girl was kicked & beaten until her tailbone shattered.  I have no sympathy for this girl, and I hope she pays dearly for what part she personally played in this.

ITA Rhune.  I also hope they go to jail for what they did.  They deserve to have a record that follows them for the rest of their lives! Embarassed

They must pay the consequences of their actions.  Otherwise I can't imagine what kind of society we would now live in.

Where the heck are their parents in all of thisHuh?  I can assure you that if she, or any of the others involved, was my child, it wouldn't take a school suspension to keep her from the prom or graduation - I would be keeping her from it.  Her @$$ would, among other things, be grounded.  How is it that these parents don't teach their kids about accepting responsibility and consequencesHuhHuh

School offers deal to accused students
Wednesday, May 21, 2003 Posted: 1:38 AM EDT (0538 GMT)

NORTHBROOK, Illinois (AP) -- Thirty-one students accused in a videotaped hazing have been offered a deal to graduate on time if they won't fight expulsion or try to exploit the widely publicized incident with a book or movie deal.

Glenbrook North High School officials say some of the students are considering the offer, which also requires the students to attend counseling and perform community service. School board attorney Lawrence Weiner said they would be expelled but the school would freeze their grades at their previous levels instead of automatically flunking them.

"They'll graduate with their class," he said.

School officials have suspended the 31 students over a May 4 flag football game where students were beaten, splattered with paint and hit with mud and feces. In addition, Cook County prosecutors have charged 15 students with misdemeanor battery. The hazing was videotaped and widely shown on television.

The offer came up Monday at the court hearing of Marnie Holz, one of the students suing to overturn her suspension. School officials had notified the 31 students of the offer in writing.

Attorneys for some of the students appealing suspensions, including Holz's attorney, Larry Kaplan, said they would reject the offer. Kaplan said his client is suing for reinstatement and would not sign the deal "as a matter of principle."

"For one thing, we believe the school exceeded its clear authority," he said. "We believe Marnie was punished for conduct which the school has accepted and tolerated for 23 years."

He said the expulsion would cause "irreparable harm" despite the school's promise not to release disciplinary records to colleges.

Steven Decker, attorney for two suspended girls -- one of them among the 15 charged with battery -- said his clients likely would reject the offer. He said the school is "just trying to save face."

The school initially said it had suspended 32 students because of the hazing but acknowledged Monday that it had misidentified one of the four boys suspended.

"He was allowed right back in school," school district spokeswoman Diane Freeman said. "He didn't miss a beat."

:yell:

Yeah, I'm just sooooo shocked that the school is offering these guys deals.  I am 100% certain that not a one of them will serve any kind of jail time at all.  They will get community service and slaps on the wrist.  Heaven forbid they actually get punished for what they did.  Course if these kids had ever been punished growing up, they wouldn't have done this kinda crap in the first place.

From what I read, this is an upper middle class to upper class neighborhood.

Board expels students involved in hazing
Monday, May 26, 2003 Posted: 10:59 AM EDT (1459 GMT)

GLENVIEW, Illinois (AP) -- The 31 high school seniors suspended as a result of a videotaped hazing incident in suburban Chicago have been expelled, but will be allowed to receive their diplomas on time, school officials said.

At a meeting late Sunday, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education also voted to uphold the suspensions of all of the students.

The students will be banned from the school grounds and all school activities, including the graduation ceremony, but the school will freeze their grades at previous levels instead of automatically flunking them, said Superintendent Dave Hales.

Videotape of the May 4 event shows juniors from the school being showered with mud, paint, feces and garbage as onlookers, some holding beer cups, cheered.

Fifteen students have been charged with misdemeanor battery, while two students and two adults were charged with alcohol-related misdemeanors for allegedly providing beer to underage drinkers.
