this very sad story happened this week. On monday evening this girl was walking home from a friend's house. the mom had offered to walk her home but the girl declined. It was in my neighbourhood. I feel so ill and also frightened.

The search to find 10-year-old Holly Jones’ killer continues.

The quest to find more out about the case splashed back onto the Toronto waterfront Thursday, as the Police Marine Unit went back to work. Divers will continue their grid search of the bottom of the lake.

The 10-year-old was gone less than 24 hours before her body parts were found along the lakeshore on Tuesday. But officers say they have yet to locate her clothing.

Meanwhile, police say a coroner’s exam of the young child’s remains has unearthed important evidence. Staff Inspector Gary Ellis refused to elaborate on that issue, but did tell the cruel predator who claimed Holly’s life to “turn themselves in” immediately.

And as the quest to find the murderer goes on, a community overwhelmed with grief tries to express support for the little girl’s family. A memorial in tribute to Holly Jones is growing. Mourners have taken flowers, stuffed animals and personal messages to the front lawn of her family’s home. On Wednesday, her grief-stricken mother publicly thanked everyone for showing their support.

Interestingly the news reported that there was an amber alert in this case.

I did not see it here on the amber alert at forumsnet so I was thinking that there must be something different for Canada.

Sadly in this case the amber alert was not sufficient to keep her alive.

Here is an update on this story. A suspect was arrested on Friday June 20th. He lived too damned close to our house for my comfort. Let me tell you.

Apparently the cops have had him on constant surveillance for 2 weeks. He was one of the men in the neighbourhood who had refused to have their DNA tested. There were about 100 men who they cops asked in a door to door search of the neighbourhood.

I had to drive by and see the place with my own eyes on the way downtown this evening. The street is entirely blocked off and there is a big cop truck at one end where all the evidence is being collected before taking to do the cop shop and another cop at the other end and everything in between fenced off.

Investigators focused on Mr. Briere because small green fibres found on Holly's body matched bath mats they'd seen in his home, which they had been watching for as long as two weeks before the arrest after he -- and several other men in the area -- refused to provide DNA samples.

They arrested him after DNA retrieved from a pop can he discarded was compared to DNA found under Holly's fingernails, Toronto media outlets reported yesterday.

As Mr. Briere appeared in court, forensic identification officers continued to look for evidence in an apartment in a duplex he rented. It's on the route Holly was believed to have been walking when she vanished and is only 100 metres from her home.

I also note that he is NOT the same person who has been trying to abduct young children in the neighbourhood. Sigh - i LIKE our neighbourhood but this really stinks.

yes because the other moms got a clear view of the grabber and he's not the same guy. The grabber is aged 45 to 60 years and this guy is 35.

I wish it was but I think these other creep(s) were trying to be creeps and get Jones' murderer to take the rap. Of course that was stupid but these idiots are not exactly rocket scientists.

that any of this crap is happening not just in my neighbourhood but anywhere.

I was pretty upset after we moved into this neighborhood and I found out we have a registered child molester 3 blocks away. I wish I'd looked that up before we moved...
