The Rolling Stones have a long history of a great relationship with Toronto. They practice here before their tours and hang out here. They really are honourary Torontonians. There are now only 10 probable cases of SARS left in The Greater Toronto Area and the WHO has announced that Toronto is no longer SARS spot (not sure of the correct terminology) The economy has taken a hit and the governments are trying to get toronto back on track for the summer tourist season. Quote:You can’t always get what you want, but sometimes, you’ll find, you get what you need. And what Toronto needs is some good publicity in the wake of our S.A.R.S. outbreak. The good news is the Rolling Stones might give it to us. The iconic rock act has tentatively agreed to headline a free concert in the city, to help it recover from the economic backlash caused by the ailment. The concert could draw thousands of fans, and would be one of the key events in a big effort to pour people back into hotels, restaurants and theatres that have lost business because of fears about the disease. The band’s promoter said that the government asked if the Stones would be into helping in the effort, and they said yes. Michael Cohl said that now the matter is in the hands of the government. The different levels of power would have to scare up enough cash to stage the rock show – as much as $10 to $11 million. And it could potentially take place at the former Downsview air base on July 29 or 30. Mick and company are fans of the city. They rehearsed for their last three tours here and enjoy the bustling metropolis. The Stones would have to interrupt their European tour, which begins on June 4, to come to Toronto. And Cohl warns that the concert isn’t a sure thing yet, as many details still have to be worked out. |
