Girl rescued from washing machine
Monday, May 26, 2003 Posted: 2:53 AM EDT (0653 GMT)

POMONA, California (AP) -- A 2-year-old girl was rescued from a locked, running washer at a coin laundry and her mother was arrested after a surveillance tape allegedly showed her putting the child into the machine, police said.

An officer smashed the window of the machine with his baton to rescue the girl, who was "submerged in water," police Sgt. Matt Stone said.

The child was unconscious when she was pulled from the washer Saturday but breathing. She was taken to a hospital where she was listed in serious condition with cuts, scrapes, bruises. She had inhaled some water but was expected to survive, Stone said.

Her mother, Erma Osborne, 35, of Pomona, California, later was arrested for investigation of child endangerment and held on $10,000 bail.

Surveillance camera footage showed that the woman placed her daughter in one washer, then removed her and placed her in a second front-loading washer, which turned on when she closed the door, Stone said.

"She wasn't drowned but she was getting there," Los Angeles County fire Capt. Dan Ramirez said.

The machine apparently locks automatically when the wash cycle begins and does not unlock until the cycle ends, Ramirez said.

Efforts by the girl's mother and bystanders to unlock the door failed.

It's my personal belief that people should not be allowed to take their children home from the hospital until they can prove they have attended a proper parenting tutorial (preferably offered at the hospital - hell even a 2 hour video and some handouts would make a difference).  I realize this won't save all children, but I believe it would save many if parents, especially those in low income/low educated areas, were given some better tools in how to take care of a child and what to do with anger.  They should also make a course required in middle schools.  I realize my beliefs don't reflect everyone's and you all are welcome to disagree, but I personally think this would do a world of good.

This is such a sad story I can barely type.  Rhune I totally agree with your post about not permitting children to go home with parents in these situations.

Actaully, I meant new mother's shouldn't be allowed to leave the hospital with thier babies until they have taken some form of a parenting class or video.  In this case it's unlikely she will get her kid back without completing one at least. It would be nice if she never got her kid back and the kid went into a loving foster or adoptive home, but that is very very unlikely to happen.  The courts like to have kids with biological families here, even when there is a better home for them elsewhere.

In Canada the child would become a ward of the state - and cared for by children's aide until the mother  was approved for the child to return - which in this case would be unlikely.

I think parenting courses are a good idea - not just in the hospital but at subsequent ages as well.  Licensed parenthood.

Thank God there were other people there, who at least tried to help this baby girl.  Thank God that that glass was broken to get her out.

This child was more than likely tormented and abused long before the washer incident.  Subconsciously, maybe she was trying to get help with her.... uh, "problem" - anger, drugs, a combo or whatever.

At this moment, I don't want this child returned to her mother - ever.  I like Rhune's idea about  parental training and plenty of follow-up support - emphasis on the word "support".  It's  one thing to learn all about pregnancy, labour and delivery and buying things and stuff for the baby.  It's quite another thing caring for raising a child.

I pray this child will be protected and loved by truly mature  caring adults.

My first thought after reading about this was the mother was allowing her child to play in the washing machines. Maybe because I am niave or I just can't believe a mother would purposely put her daughter in a machine and turn it on. Also, what about the people in the laundermat? Why didn't someone say something after she was in the first machine.

You're not naive, Jac.  It's just so difficult for most everyone to believe a mother would do something so cruel but these things happen every second of every day.

I don't believe a two yo child could climb up into one of those machines without someone noticing and putting a stop to it.  Also those machines won't automatically lock and activate until the coins have been inserted.

The naive one here is the child's grandmother who states she doesn't believe what the cameras show.

I pulled this from KABC in L.A.....

Child in Stable Condition

POMONA — A two year-old girl in Pomona is in stable but guarded condition after her mother apparently put her in a washing machine.

Meanwhile, the mother, 35 year-old Erma Osborne, is being held on $100,000 bail. She was arrested for investigation of child endangerment.

Officers were called to Lucy's Laundromat on Saturday afternoon to rescue the girl.

Surveillance camera footage shows that Osborne placed her daughter in one washer, then removed her and placed her in a second washer. When she closed the door, the machine turned on and the front door locked.

She became frantic when she realized she couldn't open it. Efforts by bystanders to unlock the door also failed.

When officers arrived at the scene, they had to smash the front window of the locked washing machine with a baton to rescue the unconscious girl.

Friends and neighbors expressed disbelief that the mother put her daughter in the machine. The girl's grandmother, Mary Osborne, told an LA television station, "I don't believe what the camera says."
