Surprise, Surprise - No Jail Time for Hazers

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A federal judge Thursday turned down a last-ditch effort to reverse the expulsion of a high school senior who joined in a videotaped hazing incident at a park earlier this month.

U.S. District Chief Judge Charles P. Kocoras warned an attorney for Liat Gendelman, 18, that going on with the case could damage the student's reputation.

"Everybody makes mistakes," Kocoras said. "I made plenty of mistakes when I was a kid. Fortunately none of them came back to haunt me. I don't want this one to come back to haunt her."

His refusal to grant a temporary restraining order against Northfield Township School District 225 appeared to end Gendelman's legal battle.

The teenager was among 31 students at Glenbrook North High School expelled May 25 after the May 4 hazing incident. Senior girls slugged and pushed junior girls, and showered them with mud, garbage, paint and feces while onlookers, some hoisting beer cups, cheered them on.

Gendelman's attorney, Dolores Ayala, said she would not appeal.

"We are going to respect Judge Kocoras' opinion," Ayala said.

The expelled students will be barred from the June 8 graduation ceremony but will receive diplomas if they fulfill counseling and community service requirements, school officials said.

I am not surprised by this as Judge states we all do wrong and yes I dont recall going quite that far I do agree with his verdict. Perhaps a lesson was learned here I certainly hope so. I think parents involved were very wrong but jail no. Allot of this hoopla came from Media Hype! I amnot saying they werent wrong they most certainly were but without Media Hype we would not even be posting this!

I think the only lesson earned here is that mommy and daddy's lawyers will take care of everything.  I don't think we do people like this any favors by not giving them a little taste of jail time.

Unfortunately Rhune - I'll have to agree with you!  It seems that so many children today (I think Confusious said it first - lol) aren't being taught about the consequences of their behaviour/actions and, in a case like this and after viewing the clips of the hazing again this morning - they seem to act like what they were doing was perfectly ok.

I wouldn't call what any of them did (even the people video taping) a mistake.  All this was well thought out and planned.  Hazing is an activity that has gone on before I was born but it used to be university/college related.  Many people have died due to hazing activities gone awry.  I think 5 of these students were sent to hospital but thank God, no one was hurt seriously.

Personally, I think putting (some) of these kids in jail for their actions is NOT the worst thing that could happen to them.  The "worst" is that most of them got away with it.   Just my two cents.......
