West Nile found in crow

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg may have its first case of West Nile virus of the season.

Health officials say a dead crow was found in the city and it has tested positive. No other details are available yet.

The test results were revealed on Friday, the same day health minister Dave Chomiak held a news conference to announce the province's state of readiness to battle West Nile.

About 50 people have been hired to work as regional response teams throughout the province.

An aggressive mapping and larval sampling program is in place to monitor the activity of Culex mosquitoes, which are the most-frequent carriers of West Nile.

Doctor Margaret Fast is a medical officer of health with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

She believes West Nile is here for the long term, but she can't predict what the impact will be.

"We need to expect that there will be human cases," says Fast. "I don't think anybody is in a position to say what those numbers might be. Certainly we may not have cases, we didn't have cases last year. Ontario had many cases. It's a very new disease."

There have been no confirmed cases of West Nile virus in humans or horses this year.

"Senility Prayer"...God grant me...
The senility to forget the people I never liked
The good fortune to run into the ones that I do
And the eyesight to tell the difference."
