Cord Blood Research
« on: Jun 18th, 2003, 6:22pm »

When my husband and I had our last child, we decided to bank the cord blood - it's rich in stem cells and matches your family, in case anything goes wrong.  The place we bank with, also has an active research facility and I get news updates from time to time on what advancements have been made.  I thought I'd share these.  It's really interesting what all they are doing and coming up with.

Dear Cbr Family:

As summer 2003 rapidly approaches we wanted to take a moment to share some new stem cell research findings with you. This information is sent to educate you on the ongoing interest of medical researchers on the future of stem cell therapies.

- Research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis suggests that stem cells from bone marrow or umbilical cord blood may be useful for treating people with liver damage due to cirrhosis, viral infection, trauma, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. "There is a huge demand for liver transplants but there are never enough organs, and the procedure is not always successful," says study leader Jan A. Nolta, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine. "We're hoping that in the future we can use bone marrow or umbilical cord blood stem cells from matched donors to help treat liver disease and reduce the need for liver transplants." - Journal "Blood" - May 15, 2003

- Confirming what many cancer specialists have long
believed, British researchers have shown that high-dose
chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant together are far more effective against the bone cancer multiple myeloma than standard chemo. In addition, patients getting the more aggressive treatment were five times more likely to have virtually all traces of cancer eliminated from their blood. Dow Jones International News - May 8, 2003

We will continue to bring you updates on new and interesting studies being conducted using stem cell technology.  For more information on these and additional new studies visit our Web site at:

Cbr wishes you and your family a very happy summer season.

Warmest regards,
Cbr

That's wonderful, Rhune.  I wish now that I had been more aggressive about this subject with my daughter last year before Quinn was born.  Everything is A-OK health wise, but you just never know.  IF there is another grandchild on the way someday - I won't let this subject be cast aside again.

I can understand why most people don't do it.  It's incredibly expensive.  The only way we were able to do it was because my father wanted us to and helped pay for it.  He'd seen a show about it on how they used stem cells from a sibling's cord blood to cure a little boy of sickle cell anemia, and was real adamant about wanting to do that.  I'm glad that we did!

Oh - I hadn't thought about the $ side of it Rhune.  What kind of outlay are we talking about here?  Is this not covered by insurance?

It was not covered by my insurance and it was $1000 plus $99 a year for storage fees.  I understand there are other cord blood banks that are cheaper than the one I went with and the price may have come down some since I did this, but it is not cheap.  There is no way we would have been able to afford it if my father hadn't wanted to do this and helped out, but if you can work the $ out, I recommend it.  It's a one time opportunity...you just have that one shot to collect it, and if anything did go wrong in your family it would be worth every penny.  I hope nothing goes wrong that requires it either, but I know there are members of my family with diabetes and one of the areas they have been making headway in with the cord blood stem cells is diabetes.  My hope is that one day we might be able to cure members of our family of diabetes with the blood we've banked.  Who knows, maybe it won't happen in my lifetime, but maybe my children's children will be able to make use of it some day. i have stored Wednesday's cord blood as well. The fee was CAD$600 in 1998 and there was only one place to choose.  I pay CAD$100 per year for the storage fee.
