Strikes Down Texas Law; Justices Split on Gay Rights
The Associated Press

W A S H I N G T O N, June 26— The Supreme Court struck down a ban on gay sex today, ruling that the law was an unconstitutional violation of privacy.

The 6-3 ruling reverses course from a ruling 17 years ago that states could punish homosexuals for what such laws historically called deviant sex.

The case is a major re-examination of the rights and acceptance of gay people in the United States. More broadly, it also tests a state's ability to classify as a crime what goes on behind the closed bedroom doors of consenting adults.

Today's ruling invalidated a Texas law against "deviate sexual intercourse with another individual of the same sex.

exerpt from MSNBC:

Legal experts said the justices’ reliance on the right to privacy in the decision in the Texas case also would topple laws in nine other states banning sodomy for both heterosexuals and homosexuals, except as they apply to public conduct. Those states are Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia.

damn, now I won't get that rush of breaking the law back home Wink

I'm glad this happened.  It's never made sense to me that what consenting adults "do" in the privacy of their home, should be the business of any entity.

I agree Wings. Do you know that there is also a law on the books (and NH has it too) that no couple may perform oral sex ever. They did a news thing about it a year or two back and made a big joke out of big brother watching to see what you were doing.

If the law would concentrate a lot more on bringing to justice murders, rapists and sickos, and making their punishments fit the crime instead of worrying what consenting adults do behind close doors..this world would be a safer and happier place.

You know this is interesting because I was listening to the radio the other night, and "Love Line" was on and they had a guest on that was talking about how much money is wasted on busting people people for consensual crimes, and then cited how much money was spent (hundred of thousands of dollars) and an absurd amount of officers used, to bust Heidi Fleiss.  He also brought up that it seemed like a waste to him to have officers posing as prostitutes to catch "Johns" when most departments are complaining about how they don't have enough man power and dollars for other violent cases... I'm sure Bumper will chime in on this one and correct me if this gentleman is wrong, but I kinda thought he had a point.

I just had another thought.  If ONLY every burg, town, city, county and state in the USA would/could seek out all those dusty musty documents dating back hundreds of years ago - that set forth "rules" and/or archaic laws that should have been obliterated eons ago - and replace them with laws pertinent to todays societal "ooopies".  If ONLY.....
