Comic Actor Buddy Hackett Dead in L.A. at 79

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Veteran comedian Buddy Hackett, a talk-show staple whose career stretched from the early days of television to such features as "The Love Bug" and "The Little Mermaid," has died, his family said on Monday.

Hackett, who was 79, was found earlier in the day at his Malibu beach house, his son, Sandy, told local Los Angeles media outlets. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Buddy Hackett's feature credits also included the 1963 ensemble comedy "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World," and he recently co-starred in "Action," a critically acclaimed but short-lived TV series that satirized Hollywood.

Hackett, who was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., got his start by working as a stand-up comic at resorts in New York's Catskill mountains. After guest-starring on an early TV show, 1945's "Laff Time," he made his feature film debut two years later as the voice of a talking camel in "Slave Girl."

Following a two-year stint on Broadway in the comedy "Lunatics and Lovers," he landed the title role in the 1956 sitcom "Stanley," which co-starred Carol Burnett (news). He eventually became a favorite on TV talk and variety shows, and maintained a parallel career as a racy nightclub comic.

His feature career was dominated by work in family films, such as 1961's "Everything's Ducky," 1962's "The Music Man" and 1969's "The Love Bug." The hit Disney cartoon "The Little Mermaid," in which Hackett played the voice of Scuttle the seagull, introduced him to a new generation of fans in 1989. He reprised his role 11 years later in a direct-to-video sequel.

This was the first adult comedienne that my parents ever let me watch. I loved him and his comedy..his routines crack me up to this day. I will very much miss this man and his humor.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Buddy Hackett, whose comic career spanned more than five decades and ranged from the Catskills to Hollywood, has died.
Hackett, 79, died late Sunday (June 29) or early Monday at his home in Southern California. The cause of death hasn't been determined, but Hackett's son Sandy tells the AP his father had diabetes.

Born Leonard Hacker in Brooklyn, Hackett worked in his father's upholstery shop as a kid before realizing he had the ability to make his classmates laugh. After serving in World War II, he changed his name and set out to make it as a comedian.

After working the Borscht Belt in New York's Catskill mountains, Hackett was invited to replace Curly Howard in the Three Stooges in 1946. He declined the offer and decided to work on his own.

The decision turned out to be a good one, as Hackett soon started landing movie and TV roles. His first part was on "School House," a comedy and musical revue on the DuMont network, and he starred in the 1950s NBC series "Stanley," which also featured a young Carol Burnett and had Woody Allen and Neil Simon on its writing staff. He was also a frequent guest on "The Tonight Show."

His movie credits include "The Music Man," "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and "The Love Bug." He also did voice work for "The Little Mermaid."

Most recently, he served as a judge for NBC's "Last Comic Standing."

Hackett is survived by his wife, Sherry, his son and two daughters.
