Oreo maker in fat-fighting mode

Kraft Foods says it will alter portion sizes for various products and stop in-school marketing.
July 1, 2003: 11:23 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Kraft Foods, the No. 1 U.S. food company, said Tuesday it will take steps to fight obesity by putting a cap on the size of single-serving packages, stopping all in-school marketing campaigns and implementing guidelines that give more details about the nutritional characteristics of all its products.

The company, whose products include Nabisco cookies and crackers, Oscar Mayer meats and Kraft cheeses, said these efforts to combat obesity also will include measures "to improve existing products and provide alternative choices."

"Just as obesity has many causes, it can be solved only if all sectors of society do their part to help," a statement from co-CEO Betsy Holden said. "Kraft is committed to product choices and marketing practices that will help encourage healthy lifestyles and make it easier to eat and live better."

Michael Mudd, spokesman for Kraft Foods North America, said the company is in the process of setting a portion size limit on its single-serving food packages -- those meant to be consumed by one person -- such as Kraft's candy bars, beverages, and vendor packs of Oreo cookies.

"Some of the guidelines for setting the limit will be total calories and other nutrient contents sufficient for a single-serving portion,” Mudd said. “For products that are above these levels, we will reduce the portion size. [For] products that are at the level set, or below it, we will increase the portion size.”

Some analysts say Kraft also is taking a “proactive” step in the face of lawsuits targeting the company’s products. Last month a lawsuit seeking to ban Oreo cookies in California was withdrawn after provoking criticism from the legal establishment for potentially abusing the U.S. court systems.

Nevertheless, Kraft said the company has paid attention to such matters.

“If these measures also discourage unfair litigation, that’s just fine with us,” Mudd said.

Kraft was spun off in 2001 from the former Philip Morris Cos., now Altria Group, the holding company that owns tobacco firm Philip Morris and a stake in brewer SABMiller PLC. Altria, which has been hit with a number of lawsuits about the health consequences of its tobacco products and its marketing of cigarettes to youth, still owns 84 percent of Kraft.

“Kraft is learning from its parent company about litigation matters and it’s trying to be proactive,” said Amy Greene, an analyst with Avondale Partners. “Kraft is also an industry behemoth and it knows that it’s better to set the course than to be forced to follow it.”

Green does not own shares of Kraft (KFT: down $0.31 to $32.24) and her firm does not have an investment banking relationship with the company.

However, the company’s announcement drew some praise from the American Dietetic Association.

“I think Kraft’s move should be applauded especially in today’s climate where there is much concern over childhood obesity.,” said Julie Walsh, a registered dietician and spokeswoman for the association.

Added Walsh, “Many of Kraft’s products are convenient foods for busy parents. Parents want to feel good about what they're giving their kids to eat. But Americans also like fat and sugary foods. So Kraft has a challenge ahead of itself by trying to get consumers to buy its healthier food that might not necessarily taste the same.”

Kraft said it expects to complete the latest development of food standards for the company by the end of 2003, and will begin implementing them in 2004.

*sigh*  Yes - it's just a damned shame Kraft and thousands of other companies literally FORCE and JAM their foods down children and adults gullets.   Undecided

When are the adults and the parents of children going to take the responsibility for what they eat?  Responsibility is key.  Obesity is rampant amongst all genders and ages.  This is all so sad and makes this poster  Angry .

This situation is back in the news tonight.  And it still infuriates me.  One congressman (?) made some good statements - but this is only a synopsis.

He said Hersey didn't make people eat that, because they like chocolate.

He said much the same of Pringles/chips, McDonald's/burgers and......

"The restaurant didn't make the patron return three times to the buffet."

Angry  I sooooo agree with him.
