B.C. braces for key decision Wednesday

OLYMPIC-SIZED ANTICIPATION: Michael Jollymore of Island Displays finishes securing the largest Canadian flag in Victoria to the ballroom wall at The Empress. The flag is being installed as a backdrop for what bid organizers hope will be a celebration of Vancouver being picked Wednesday to host the 2010 Winter Olympics.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge will glance at a slip of paper Wednesday in Prague, step to the podium of the Hilton Hotel's assembly hall, and make a brief announcement that could have profound repercussions on British Columbia for years to come.

On that point boosters and critics of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics bid can agree, even as their views diverge on the nature of that impact if the B.C. bid is chosen over those from Pyeongchang and Salzburg. Whatever their opinions, and despite the early hour, British Columbians are sure to be watching from Sooke to Salmo and Duncan to Dawson Creek.

If the name of the city coming out of Rogge's mouth is "Van . . ." you won't even hear the rest of it amid the din and jubilation in the packed ballroom of The Empress, where Games supporters will be thick on the ground.

But if the words are "Pyeongchang" or "Salzburg," you'll be able to hear a puck drop amid the stunned silence of the room.

More than 400 confirmations have already been received to attend the Tourism Victoria-sponsored bid announcement bash at The Empress with the number possibly topping out at over 650 when doors open at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday morning. If the crowd overflows, additional televisions will also be set up in second room.

The crowd will be met, appropriately for the occasion, by something resembling a five-ring circus with a band playing and a ballroom festooned with the largest Canadian flag in Victoria at nine metres by 4.5 metres, Olympic banners, images of winter sports athletes and what is promised to be a unique version of O Canada.

Several hours after Canadian hockey icon Wayne Gretzky addresses the IOC in Prague on behalf of the B.C. bid, 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics triathlon champion and Island folk hero Simon Whitfield will take to The Empress stage for the opening remarks of the Victoria function.

Two big-screen TVs at each end of the ballroom will then be tuned in at 7:30 a.m. to CBC's coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics vote from Prague. Every Canadian network will show the bid announcement live but CBC, the national Olympic rights holder, is the only Canadian broadcaster allowed access inside the assembly hall of the Prague Hilton where the voting takes place.

The first round of balloting is expected to be completed at about 7:45 a.m. PDT. If either Vancouver, Pyeongchang or Salzburg receives more than 50 per cent of the ballots cast by the 119 eligible IOC members, the race is over and Rogge will immediately proceed to the podium and announce the host city for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

If no city receives a clear majority in the first round of balloting, the city receiving the fewest votes will be dropped from the ballot and the top-two vote-receiving cities will go to a second and final round, after which Rogge will announce the 2010 host at about 8:30 a.m.

The Empress gathering will be among the largest of the many bid announcement parties around the province, after the 17,000 who will congregate at GM Place in Vancouver and the expected 5,000 in the Whistler town square. Many of Victoria's top athletes, including Summer Olympics medallists Silken Laumann and Derek Porter, will be part of the announcement festivities at GM Place.

"That's the toughest ticket in the province and they sent me one to sit on the stage -- hey, I'll take it," said Porter, a gold-medallist in rowing at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics and silver-medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games.

Several groups from the Comox Valley, which is expected to score big as a pre-Games training site because of the Mount Washington ski hill, are being sent to both the GM Place and Empress announcement venues. Numerous former Victoria Olympians, from 1960 Rome Summer Games swim finalist Bob Wheaton to 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games bronze- medal curler Cheryl Noble, will also be at The Empress.

Other 2010 announcement events on the Island include those at the Kiwanis Hall in Port Alberni, with MLA Gillian Trumper in attendance, the Village Green in Ucluelet and Glengarry Golf Links in Qualicum Beach.

You must be excited about this as all get-up, K-A!  If they get the bid - do you plan to attend?

wings ~ i am not that excited about the bid because of what happens to the poor during olympic moments (note atlanta where the homeless were imprisoned or taken physically out of the city ~ gentification)

anyway, WE WON THE BID!  i am so incredibly proud of my country and my city.  i was watching the bid video with the bryan adams' (born and raised in vancouver) song "it's a new day" with all the shots of vancouver, its' people, its' culture and i started to cry.  they just made the announcement and now 'spirit of the west' is singing in GM place where thousands of people had been eagerly awaiting the announcement.  one cannot help to feel proud of your country and your city.  knowing that larry campbell is the mayor of vancouver, the man responsibly for safe injection sites come august, i know that there will be efforts to protect the poor from that games.  unfortuantely, the downtown eastside is vancouver's dirty little secret and every effort will be made to remove it.  i can only pray while putting on my social justice boots and joining in the struggle for the poor, the oppressed and the addict.

as you can tell, i have mixed feelings.  i guess this much is obvious.   Roll Eyes

YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!!!!!

 I love message boards!!!

here's the story from pulse24.com

Quote:
They’ve got the mountains, they’ve got the weather – and now they’ve got the Olympics. Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. beat out Salzburg, Austria and Pyeonchang, South Korea for the honour of hosting the 2010 Winter Games. The organization and planning took months to prepare for, but in the end, it all came down to a simple and brief announcement from the International Olympic Committee in Prague.

It came at 11:46am Wednesday, after all three candidates made their final presentations. The I.O.C. retired to deliberate on its final choice, first eliminating Salzburg – then revealing the dramatic winner. “The International Olympic Committee has the honour of announcing that the 21st Winter Olympics in 2010 are awarded to the city of Vancouver," I.O.C. President Jacques Rogge told the expectant multitude.

Crowds in Prague and B.C. went wild over the news, setting off a day-long party that may well last until the Games begin. The decision means a major boost to the local economy, as well as countless jobs leading to the events seven years from now. Ironically, the choice may put a damper on Toronto’s chances of landing the Summer Games in 2012 – it’s unlikely the I.O.C. would choose the same country to host the event so soon after awarding it to Vancouver.

I was switching channels this morning - icky old Wimbleton was on again.  I clicked on CTV - wondering what the heck was going on.  So many people - all over the world were waiting....and waiting.....

Then it was time to make the announcement and this they did, with pomp and circumstance.  A little girl came on stage, dressed in the most beautiful costume, carrying a very ornate satin pillow, on which was THE document was to be placed.

This done, she turned and with purpose and dignity, she took specifically measured steps towards the President of IOC.  When Vancouver was announce as the chosen city - raucous cheers and yahoos were heard the world over.

I'm now happy that Wimbleton caused me to view such a fantastic event as this was.
