COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- The Web site that accepted a personal ad from convicted child killer Susan Smith seeking pen pals from her prison cell asked her Friday to withdraw the ad because the result has been "kind of a freak show."

"However, if Susan wants to keep the ad, we won't force her to get rid of it," said Jason Roberts, a spokesman for the Edgewater, Florida-based writeaprisoner.com.

Roberts said Smith's online ad has gotten hundreds of responses but was becoming a distraction from the site's mission of helping other inmates make contacts in the outside world. He also said the media attention to the ad was overwhelming.

Smith, who is serving a life sentence, gained notoriety in 1994 for going on national television to tearfully plead for the return of her missing sons. She later admitted strapping 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex into their car seats and rolling the sleeping boys into a lake.

"I hope to receive letters from those who are not judgmental and who are sincere," reads the ad, accompanied by a photo of a smiling Smith, 31, wearing sweat pants marked "SC Department of Corrections."

In the $40 advertisement, posted last month, Smith says, "I will always hurt for the pain I've caused so many, especially my children."

"I love rainbows, Mickey Mouse, the beach, mountains and waterfalls," the ad reads. "I consider myself to be sensitive, caring and kind-hearted. I'm currently serving a life sentence on the charge of murder."

The ad ends with the words: "May God bless each one of you!"

Corrections Director Jon Ozmint confirmed Friday that Smith paid for the ad with a check from her South Carolina Department of Corrections account. Prisoners often have accounts for the small amount of money they earn doing jobs behind bars.

Smith's personal life has made headlines before. Two prison guards were disciplined for having sex with Smith three years ago. One was sentenced to 90 days in jail, the other was put on probation.

am I the only one who thinks this is just so wrong?

I have a good friend who's daughter was involved in a horrible accident a few years back. Her daughter along with 5 other children had been being babysat by this woman for as years and suddenly the woman stopped caring but the kids loved her and never told on her. It turns out that she had traded her station wagon for a truck and no longer had any place for the kids so she would take them places with all of them loose in the back. One day on a ride in the country, the little girl sitting in the front seat wanted to do swirley's..so Nancy did them while going 50 miles an hour down a back winding road. She hit a tree and killed that little girl. My friend's daughter ended up in Boston for 5 months with a destroyed tailbone, a broken face and they didn't know for the first few weeks if she would even wake up. They sent the other really bad case to Hanover..it was a little boy who will be paralyzed all his life. My friend's daughter has made an incredible recovery over the past 2 years but the memories haunt her all the time and emotionally all the kids have been in therapy for the whole time. My friend had a son who was involved too and he lost a lot of his teeth and suffered a broken leg but he watched as his sister was thrown around in the truck and couldn't stop it.

To this day Nancy feels she did nothing wrong and is back out on bail. The families had to put a restraining order on her cause she was constantly trying to talk to the kids and she would wave at them every time they drove by her house..the kids are terrified of this woman that they once considered a best friend...it is all very sad.

My friend's daughter is another clear sign of the incredible power of prayer though..her recovery was incredible and she had people all over the world praying for her.

personally I think they get way too many liberties, it is called jail for a reason. Of course only my opinion.

If any of you heard of a series on VH1, I think they have since pulled it, but it was about prison bands. 2 of my staff and good friends, had their daughters murdered by one of the men in this band from graterford prison, their band was the focus of this show just a couple months ago. Needless to say, there wasa big stink made, my employee was on a bunch of news shows, the guy who does americas most wanted called her personally as did our state representatives. Was quite a going on

anyway, this sort of explains why I am against this, marys daughter dreamed of being a dancer and she was killed, this man killed her and is, or shall I say, was making money from a band of former prison mates......where is the justice??

Sometimes (ok many times) The rights we enjoy as normal Law abiding persons is misused and abused by Shister lawyers and their Clients! Prison is about punishment for crimes it appals me that we give these person so many priviledges! In some cases these "prisoners" have more perks than we do! How can Susan Smith even have access to internet (which us taxpayers pay for) to place this ad? Is it a FREAK show hell yes it is. The website, I feel. should have the right to pull any ad it so chooses. This woman should not have any RIGHTS at all!!!!! What choices were her innocent children given by her when she drove their car (with them in it) into the lake!!!! Prison isnt suppose to be pleasant the idea is they hate it so much they dont commit more crimes and in Ms Smith case WHO CARES how happy she is certainly not I!! Susan Smith should have been put to death for what she did to her children! I hope she rots in HELL!

It is a Mockery that we give these kinds of monster privledges like this while her poor innocent boys had done nothing and paid the ultimate price! SusanSmith not only doesnt deserve any rights she doesnt deserve to LIVE and thats my two cents worth

Not judgemental....sincere? :laff:

I would sincerely like to tell her I don't judge her - but I know of Someone who will.....

What can we do about this website? Maybe flood the penitentiary with em's pleading that she not be allowed to be a part of that website. Also, ask why any of the prisoners are allowed such a luxury.

Perhaps contact the creator/owner of that website and ask the same. Does he think he's being kind to offer (those excuses for human beings) such a service? Or is he in it for the almighty $? The latter would be my guess.

Pray. Let's see, in the year 2024, she is illegible for her first parole hearing. That would put me at age 85 yo - so, I hope I will be so addled that I remember nothing - or dead. If I'm still around and healthy - and she is released, she'd better watch her back.

Unless she becomes pregnant in prison (shutter), if she were to be released at age 53 - hopefully she'll be long past the child-bearing age. Sorry but I'm about to puke.
