MIAMI (CNN) -- Tropical Storm Claudette continued its slow westward trek across the Gulf of Mexico toward southern Texas early Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A tropical storm watch may be issued Sunday morning for the coastal areas of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico, as the storm nears land.

According to the NHC's three-day forecast track, Claudette could hit the Texas-Mexico border region Monday night.

Claudette is moving at about 7 mph, and the storm's center is about 310 miles (500 kilometers) east-southeast of Brownsville, Texas, on the Mexico border, according to the NHC's advisory at 5 a.m. ET Sunday.

Forecasters said the storm's 50 mph sustained wind speeds were not likely to change over the next 24 hours.

Last week, the Atlantic season's third tropical storm brought plenty of rain into Caribbean and Mexican vacation spots.

Cancun party-goers were sent back to their hotels by city officials early Friday, Cancun spokesman Mario Stoute told CNN.

"At 12 o'clock [midnight Friday] we had the hotel zone advisory that all the tourists should be in their hotels, so we closed all the discotheques and night centers," Stoute said.
