Pentagon: Saddam's sons are dead
Iraqi's tip led U.S. forces to their hideout, general says
Tuesday, July 22, 2003 Posted: 8:33 PM EDT (0033 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The sons of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein were killed by U.S. troops in the northern city of Mosul after a tipster betrayed their hideout, the commander of U.S. ground forces in Iraq said Tuesday.

The bodies of Uday and Qusay Hussein were identified from "multiple sources," Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez told reporters in Baghdad. "The bodies are in a condition where you could identify them.

"They resisted the detention and the efforts of the coalition forces to go in there and apprehend them, and they were killed in the ensuing gunfight and the attacks that we conducted on the residence."

A U.S. official told CNN that Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti, Saddam's personal secretary, who was captured last month, helped identify the bodies.

In addition, this official said, other visual evidence helped identify the remains, including wounds on Uday's body from previous assassination attempts.

DNA tests are planned, but the official said he has no quibble with Sanchez' assessment that the bodies are those of the sons.

A U.S. official said Saddam was not among the dead.

Four coalition troops were wounded in the six-hour operation at a residence on the northern edge of Mosul, Sanchez said. (Map)

TV cameramen who witnessed some of the fighting said U.S. forces attacked from all sides after being refused admission to the house, and charged into the villa, encountering fierce resistance.

When asked whether the $15 million U.S. bounties on both Uday, 39, and Qusay, 37, would be paid, Sanchez said, "I would expect that it probably will happen." (Profiles: Qusay Hussein, Uday Hussein)

The White House issued a statement hailing U.S. forces for eliminating two men "responsible for countless atrocities committed against the Iraqi people and they can no long cast a shadow of hate on Iraq." (Full statement)

Sanchez and Iraqi National Congress leader Ahmed Chalabi said the deaths of Saddam's sons could undermine resistance to the occupation of Iraq, where almost daily attacks have killed 37 U.S. troops since May 1.

Speaking at the United Nations, Chalabi called the deaths of Saddam's sons "a death blow to his prestige.

"People will perceive him to be much more vulnerable now," Chalabi said.

Bodies of teen, older man also found
A senior Pentagon official said one of the other two bodies at the battle site appeared to be that of a teenage boy. U.S. officials noted that Qusay has a teenage son. The other body recovered appeared to be that of a bodyguard.

An Iraqi witness told the Arabic-language news network Al-Jazeera, "The Americans came to this house and started shooting. They were saying that Saddam's sons, Uday and Qusay, and his grandson, Mustapha, were there, and that one of his bodyguards was there, too."

Sanchez said U.S. military officials are still trying to identify those remains. He said military officials would offer more details in a briefing Wednesday.

Saddam and his sons have been fugitives since their government collapsed ahead of a U.S.-led invasion in March.

Sanchez said U.S. forces learned the brothers' whereabouts from a walk-in Iraqi tipster Monday night.

A military task force formed to hunt for Saddam and his top supporters led the raid Tuesday morning, U.S. officials told CNN. That unit was backed by 200 troops from the Army's 101st Airborne Division, along with armor and air cover, officials said.

Sanchez said soldiers from the 101st Airborne's 2nd Brigade were fired upon when they approached the house.

"The division subsequently employed multiple weapon systems to subdue the suspects, who had barricaded themselves inside the house and continued to resist detention fiercely," he said. (Gallery: The firefight scene)

Helicopters, TOW missiles and A-10 attack planes were used in the battle.

Troops who were involved described the fighting as intense, with moments that seemed "like all hell had broken loose," according to CNN correspondent Nic Robertson.

Master Sgt. Kelly Tyler, a spokeswoman for the 101st Airborne at its headquarters in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, said soldiers at the post were "absolutely proud" and "absolutely giddy."

"The 101st kicks ass," she said. "The 101st has a proud history of military tradition, and this just adds to that tradition."

Mosul is a Kurd-controlled city about 110 miles [176 kilometers] from both Syria and Iran. Intelligence officials said they are investigating whether Uday and Qusay were attempting to find a way out of Iraq.

Neighbors said the man who owned the residence where the battle took place had claimed to have been a cousin of Saddam's. They said they doubted the claim because the man's brother had been imprisoned for a decade by the regime.

But the neighbors said that the night before the battle, the man told them that Uday and Qusay had come to his home.

Reaction to deaths of Uday, Qusay
Gunfire erupted in central Baghdad on Tuesday night, forcing journalists to take cover in the Palestine Hotel. It was unclear whether it represented a new attack on U.S. troops or a celebratory response to the news -- "Probably a combination," Sanchez said.

"Given that the Iraqi people have watched CNN, it's probably very appropriate that they would be celebrating about now," he said.

"This will prove to the Iraqi people that at least these two members of the regime will not be coming back into power," Sanchez said. He said U.S. troops "remain totally committed to the same regime never returning to power and tormenting the Iraqis."

Chalabi -- a member of the Iraqi governing council appointed last week -- said Qusay was in charge of a network that was mounting attacks on U.S. troops. He said their deaths "will contribute considerably" to restoring order.

"Uday is notorious, but Qusay is an emulation of his father," he said.

L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. civil administrator in Iraq who was briefing lawmakers in Washington on Tuesday, told reporters, "I've said all along it's only a matter of time before we find Saddam Hussein. And I hope that day is a day earlier now.'

Retired Army Brig. Gen. David Grange said the deaths of Uday and Qusay would deal a psychological blow to Saddam loyalists attacking U.S. troops.

The hunt for Saddam in Iraq is led by a U.S. Special Operations team -- code-named Task Force 20 -- with support from the CIA. The task force, which also took part in the rescue of Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch, includes covert special operations forces from the various U.S. military services. (Lynch homecoming)

Qusay and Uday were the second- and third-most-wanted Iraqi leaders, and both are in the card deck of most-wanted Iraqis issued to U.S. troops in Iraq. Uday was the ace of hearts and Qusay the ace of clubs. (Flash interactive: Iraq's most-wanted)

Qusay has been the son widely perceived as most likely to have succeeded Saddam.

With Iraq preparing its defenses in the run-up to the war, Qusay was put in charge of four key areas, including Baghdad and Tikrit -- his family's tribal home.

When the war began, he was in charge of the country's intelligence network, the 80,000-strong Republican Guard and 15,000-member Special Republican Guard, which was responsible for protecting Saddam and his family.

Uday has a reputation for violence that included torturing Iraqi athletes who did not meet expectations. He ran the dreaded Saddam Fedayeen security force.

He was also in charge of the nation's Olympic committee, edited a leading newspaper, Babel, and was head of Youth TV, the country's most popular channel.

Just before the war, Uday warned that Iraqi troops would make the mothers of U.S. soldiers "weep blood instead of tears."

Correspondents Rym Brahimi, David Ensor, Jamie McIntyre, John King, Barbara Starr and Harris Whitbeck, and producers Pam Benson and Kevin Flower, contributed to this report.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I'll never cheer the death of any human being no matter how evil they are perceived to be.

Dameon you spoke the words that I have not been strong enough to speak.  thank you.  Even evil men have families and loved ones.  Every casualty of war saddens me.  War saddens me just as much as terrorism and torture.  It's so hard to find the balance of what is right.  We certainly do struggle as human beings.  Thank you for saying it so well.

Well, I'm not cheering exactly, but considering these men's sins, I'm not crying either.  One was responsible for the torture and mass murder of his own countrymen, the other took any woman that appealed to him off the streets and raped her.   Hard to feel any compassion.  However, one the people killed was a 14-15 year old son of one of the brothers.  Chances are he was being groomed to be as cruel as his father, uncle and grandfather, but he was so young.

I am clearly not cheering their deaths but i am NOT mourning either. I would have much rather captured them and tried to gain insight into Saddam's location and any WMD they may have. Most of these BRUTES are cowards at heart and they may have gave us many clues as to what Regime was up to. These especially the elder did many many sick things to their people but if we cheer their deaths we become much like the monsters themselves. But we certainly dont mourn their loss but i do feel for those who cared about them even if we didnt.

I think you just said it the best way David. I too hate seeing death for anyone and I think it lowers us to their level..

Everyone is loved by someone and someone is mourning these men today. They were brought up to believe that what they were doing was right. Hate runs rampant and hate destroys in more ways than one. I do not condone what they have done...but at the same time I still struggle with the idea that we become God and take matters into our own hands. I believe in God and I don't believe that it is our right to decide who is punished and how..I believe that God should decide their fate.  All of this is just my opinion and I don't expect anyone to agree and I should stay out of this topic...

This is why I try not to watch the news...it is all too emotional. So many torn feelings...

DAr.. i totally agree with you...

This could have been a success yet a failure, success for 2 of the targetted people were killed, failure for adding more anger to those of most are considered enemies.  The act of war and show of hate does not heal any wound.  Fire is not just killed by water, coz it fights the water, but it is killed by removing or fixing the source of the fire...Grin

very well said Pau. I'm glad that I didn't offend anyone with my statement. I am gun shy about expressing opinions due to past experiences.

And yes...we sure didn't solve anything...the more we keep sticking our noses into this..the more we are going to make enemies. I do believe the statements that were made that there will be more attacks now...

This goes back to the discussion from somewhere else...I stated and some argued against me that what is happening is not necessary the voice of the average American,  but outsiders will blame all of us and not just our Government. I truly do not believe that the majority of the Average American really wanted all of this to happen and if they did it was cause they believe all the rumors and gossip that was spread trying to get our hate and fears going. Everytime things start to calm down, we are fed more info to get us all upset again. They know what they are doing....they know how to keep all of us fearful so we will support that they are doing...

These men committed horrid crimes against innocent countrymen and women, this is a given.   Talk about stress?  How did they feel for months looking over their shoulder every minute, knowing each day could be their last.  What a pitiful existence.

I'm not cheering for their death,  only  that they can never commit torture crimes against anyone else.

Do any of you ever feel this war was started to get our minds off the bad economy?  I'm not accusing, just asking a question.

How well I remember the Sunday afternoon we heard our troops were in position, I felt sick to my stomach and began having a migraine that lasted for days.  How sad that our young men were lost for these montrous people, who have no concern for the torture and murder of other human beings.

God Bless America

well... im not against America, pardon me for what i would say, but.. somehow.. the political influence America to other countries does, sort of, in some ways, causes hate to some people for meddling in another nations issues and problems..

i'd say that America or at least your leaders (Bushes) always want to fight wars, specially outside its soil....

In the issue of Iraq, what i didn't liked with the position of US, as well as UK, is that it encroached the purpose of the UN to mediate with the issues of the member nation... instead continued with the war even without the blessing of the UN... that time I felt that UN was useless and if the US want to attack a country that does not agree with it.. it would attack it... (it feared me too much coz we are defenseless, and considered to have the weakest military in asia)

I know people here might dislike me for what I say here, but it's just my opinion... coz i totally disagree with the War that had occurred.. no matter how villanous Saddam was to his people (its their problem)... specially now that no WMD have still been found (as i know)... peace! Grin

Well Pau..it is my country and I totally agree with you. That was my point about everyone blaming all of us for something our government did. We had no right to be in there...we had no approval from the UN. At least if the UN had approved it, I could have stood behind it. But we bullied our way at the UN and when they didn't give us the answer we wanted...we just went ahead and did what we wanted anyway. It terrifies me when I let Myself think about it. If we would do this to Iraq..we could do this to any country. It isn't right. I know that some people are very convinced that we needed to be in this war and there is nothing to make them see otherwise..but our fight was with Osama and we have all but forgotten about him. It all makes such little sense and if I dwelled on it..it would destroy me.

Saddam was an awful dictator..there is no question about that. But again...my statement about us playing God comes into play. Who gave us the right to decide what countries need us to interfere with them and get out their leaders. What makes it our business? I feel bad for the Iraqi's for what they dealt with with Saddam but we had no right to be there. We are not God.

In truth, there are so many problems in our own country that it is upsetting every time we do poke our nose into other countries. Why do we worry about every else's poor people and starving children yet we have children in our own country that are abused and go hungry every day. Why are there elderly who can't afford to buy medicines so they suffer with ailments that are necessary? If we would spend a little time worrying about taking care of our own a little more..this country could be great once again.

Might I remind all of you of something Bush (both of them) cannot act alone! We have a Government that wont allow that at any point Congress could have stopped this this was a bipartiasion action NOT Bush alone. We all have our views on the War I cheer no man or womans death regardless of what they have done but I dont mourn the deaths of these killers either. The blame (if you car to blame anyone I dont) belongs with all the involved countries including France and Germany had they acted diferntly this might had gone down differntly but we will never know that. Bush is NOT a KING or DICTATOR therfore he cannot make decision like this WAR without congresses support which is filled with Rep Dem independents amen and women it wasnt Bush alone then or now! But if you feel like blaming someone (if you choose) blame yourself this Country is run by the people for the people you change things by your vote! If unhappy with President, Congress etc you vote. Here is CA we are doing just that, that is why we are having a RECALL VOTE to remove our Gonvernor! Once again I am sorry for those who loved these men and iregret anyones death but I dont mourn these two either after all they have done. One last comment we all not just here all over the world try to inflict our opinons and views on others USA, England,Iraq,Isreal etc etc are no different We (The US) just stand out because we happen to be the most powerful country in the world but we arent any different then any other country who feels theor way is best. In Irag we offered something better to the people there but even good intentions can be misunderstood of misused.
