Reeve Helps Further Stem Cell Research
Sun, Jul 27, 2003, 02:07 PM PT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Furthering his campaign for stem cell research is former "Superman" star Christopher Reeve. The paralyzed actor will visit Israel this week to study the country's treatment of spinal injuries, according to the AP.

Reeve is due to arrive in Israel on Monday (July 2Cool. Israel is a major center for stem cell study. Reeve hopes his efforts will offer hope to people with spinal cord injuries.

Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down in a 1995 horse-riding accident.

He will reportedly visit research institutions, tour facilities for the disabled and meet Israelis paralyzed in terrorist attacks during the five day visit. He also is expected to meet Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and visit Jerusalem's Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site.

Embryonic stem cells are, theoretically, programmable, capable of being triggered to develop into any type of cell in the human body. The hope is that they can be used to replace dead, dying, or missing cells, thereby opening up new treatments for diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and Parkinson's disease.

U.S. federal law strictly limits stem cell research and Reeve has criticized the Bush administration’s stance. In April, he said social and religious conservatives have had undue influence on the critical debate.
